Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 28 - April 3, 2016. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball
Brad Case / Rollins College / Fr. / RHP / Pelham, N.Y.
Case recorded two wins this week to take SSC Pitcher of the Week honors. The Pelham, New York native limited NCAA Division I Cornell to one hit across two innings. Case got the win after throwing 24 pitches, striking out two and walking none. Case surrendered five hits and three walks across 6.2 innings in the Tars’ 12-3 victory over No. 17 Lynn. Case allowed three runs, two earned, while walking three and striking out two. Rollins is 19-14 overall, 5-7 in SSC Play.
Alex Mata / Saint Leo University / Jr. / OF / Ft. Myers, Fla.
Mata earns his second SSC Player of the Week award after posting a .833 batting average, .857 on base percentage, and 1.417 slugging percentage over three games last week. Mata was 10-for-12 at the plate with at least three hit in each game. Five of Mata’s 10 hits were for extra bases with four doubles and a home run. He also tallied eight runs and two runs batted in. Mata’s top performance on the week came in the rubber game against Embry Riddle. He went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs and three runs scored in the 16-4 Saint Leo win. The Ft. Myers native went 3-for-4 with three runs in the 14-6 game one victory against ERAU. In the Lions’ only series loss, Mata went 3-for-4 and scored three times. Following the series win, Saint Leo is 20-14 overall, 3-6 in SSC play.
Softball
Geneva Santos / Barry Univeristy / So. / Pitcher / Miami, Fla.
Santos is this week's SSC Pitcher of the Week after after picking up two wins and a save over SSC opponent, Eckerd. In her top performance of the weekend, Santos worked around seven walks to hold the Tritons to a .059 BA. She gave up no runs on one hit while striking out two batters in five innings of work as Barry defeated Eckerd (5-3). The Miami, Florida native picked up the save in the Buccaneers’ 4-3 middle game victory. Santos threw an inning and a third, giving up an earned run on two hits and a walk. The Buccaneers edged the Tritons 4-3. In the final game of the weekend the Buccaneer’s sophomore pitched six and two thirds innings giving up six hits, walking four, and striking out five batters. Santos allowed just one runner to score as Barry completed the sweep of Eckerd (3-1). Barry is 17-13 overall, 11-7 in SSC play.
Jule Kranz / Rollins College / Sr. / SS / Hendersonville, Tenn.
Kranz is awarded SSC Player of the Week honors after hitting three home runs in her first three at bats in game two of the doubleheader against Nova Southeastern. Kranz is just the second player in Rollins Softball program history to accomplish such a feat. The Hendersonville, Tennessee native went 4-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored in her three home run game. Across the three-game set, the Tars’ Senior went 6-for-9 at the plate including a bases loaded clearing double in game three as Rollins Swept Nova Southeastern (7-4, 7-0, 11-1). Kranz leads the SSC in batting average (.433) and the nation in sacrifice hits per game (.56). Rollins is 27-6-1 overall and 10-2 in SSC play.
Women's Rowing
Varsity 8 Boat / Barry University / Miami Shores, Fla.
The Buccaneers Varsity 8 won the FIRA final for the second year in a row with a time of 6:37.32. Edging Central Oklahoma, Nova Southeastern, Florida Tech, and Stetson. Barry’s Varsity 8 is composed of Macarena Llano Abascal (Sr.), Anais Foppoli (Sr.), Rosie Boncheva (Sr.), Paula Klak (So.), Paola Girotto (Jr.), Beth Desmon (Sr.), Manon Girard (Fr.), Ellie Hartman (Jr.), and Coxswain Stephanie Dinkel (Jr.).
2016 SSC Rowing Award Winners - Week by Week
Tennis
Jaime Bueno / Saint Leo University / So. / Santiago, Chili
Bueno is named SSC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week after going 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles this week. Bueno won 8-5 with partner Egor Panyushkin in No. 2 Doubles and followed it up with a 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 4 Singles as the Lions topped the Tars (7-3). The Santiago, Chili native again partnered with Panyushkin, taking the No. 2 Doubles match, 8-2. In No. 4 singles, Bueno won 6-1, 7-5, and gave the Lions the fifth point they needed to seal the match for Saint Leo's first ever road win over Lynn (5-4). Saint Leo is 14-1 overall, 3-0 in SSC play.
Martina Gledacheva / Lynn University / So. / Plovdic, Bulgaria
Gledacheva earns SSC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week honors after going 4-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles this week. Gledacheva went undefeated with eight wins for fifth-ranked Lynn University. The Fighting Knights played four matches this week, winning three with the only loss coming to third-ranked Saint Leo. Gledacheva won all four of her singles and doubles matches this week to lead the Blue & White. Three of her singles victories came in straight sets as she defeated Saint Leo’s No. 5 (6-4, 6-1) and ERAU’s No. 5 (6-1, 6-0). She also claimed victories at the No. 2 doubles against Flagler (8-6), ERAU (8-4) and Eckerd (8-0) and also at the No. 3 doubles against Saint Leo (8-3). Gledacheva has double-digit wins in both singles and doubles on the season. Lynn is 13-2 overall, 2-1 in SSC play.
Men's Lacrosse
Conor Whipple / University of Tampa / Jr. / Attack / Tampa, Fla.
For the third time this season, Whipple is awarded SSC Offensive Player of the Week. The Tampa native broke Tampa’s single game record for single game points during a 22-7 win over Florida Southern College. Whipple scored five goals and assisted seven others for a total of 12 points. The previous program record of 11 was set by Whipple during his freshman season against Florida Tech. For the season, Whipple leads the conference in both assists per game (3.3) and points per game (6.9). Tampa owns an overall record of 9-1 and are 2-0 in SSC play.
Pat Brothers / Lynn University / Gr. / Goalkeeper / Burlington, Mass.
Brothers takes his second consecutive SSC Defensive Player of the Week honor with a top performance on the road against a Top-25 ranked opponent. Brothers tallied 14 saves and two groundballs in the Fighting Knights’ 14-7 victory against No. 15/20 Rollins. The Burlington, Massachusetts recorded a .667 save percentage while facing 34 shots. Lynn is now 8-3 on the year, 1-1 in SSC play.
Christopher Lasprogata / Lynn University / So. / Midfielder / Ardmore, Pa.
Lasprogata is named SSC Specialist of the Week following 17 faceoff wins at No. 15/20 Rollins. Lasprogata won 85% of faceoffs against the Tars and secured a career high 11 groundballs. With the 14-7 victory, the Fighting Knights are 8-3 overall, 1-1 in SSC play.
Women's Lacrosse
Meghan O'Brien / Florida Southern College / So. / Attacker / Rochester, N.Y.
O'Brien is this week's SSC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring a total of seven goals and recording three assists for 10 total points across two Florida Southern wins. The Rochester, New York. native began the week with a career high five goals on seven shots and recorded an assist in the Moccasins 10-9 overtime win against No. 3 Lindenwood. She was a perfect 1-for-1 on free position shots as her fifth goal on the game solidified the FSC victory. The sophomore added two more goals on two shots, with two assists and one draw control in Florida Southern’s opening SSC match against Tampa, 18-7. Florida Southern is now 9-3 overall and 1-0 in SSC play.
Gabby Barowski / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Defender / Alexandria, Va.
Barowski repeats as SSC Defensive Player of the Week after leading the Moccasins to two victories. In Florida Southern’s 10-9 overtime victory over No. 3 Lindenwood, Barowski caused three turnovers, picking up six ground balls and held Lindenwood's leading scorer, Constance to one goal on the game. While Barowski was assigned to Constance she did not score. Against Tampa, Barowski lead the Moccasin defense in holding the Spartans to just seven goals in the 18-7 FSC victory. The Alexandria, Virginia native added a goal on one shot in the conference win. Florida Southern is now 9-3 overall and 1-0 in SSC play.
