Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | January 25 - 31, 2016
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of January 25 - 31, 2016. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Men's Basketball
Marcus Dewberry / Saint Leo University / Guard / Jr. / Lake Wales, Fla.
Dewberry is awarded his third SSC Player of the Week honor after helping the Lions to a pair of conference victories last week. In 67 minutes on the court Dewberry scored 57 points and went 54 percent from the field while tallying 11 assists, ten rebounds, and three steals. He recorded 22 points, six rebounds, and five assists in an 87-84 upset victory over No. 10/11 Eckerd. The Lake Wales native went 9-10 at the line and shot 50 percent from the field in victory. Dewberry recorded a career high 35 points in an 89-86 victory against Florida Southern. In the win, he recorded six assists, four rebounds, three steals, and went 6-6 at the line while shooting 57 percent from the field. Saint Leo is 14-7 on the season, 7-4 in SSC play.
Tray Leonard / Barry University / Center / Sr. / Raleigh, N.C.
Leonard is named this week's SSC Defensive Player of the Week honor after grabbing 16 defensive rebounds in two games for the Buccaneers. In 50 minutes on the court Leonard had 25 rebounds, four steals, three blocked shots, and one assists across the two games. At the other end of the court Leonard scored 26 points, shooting 50 percent from the field. With the play of Leonard, Barry was able to capture two conference victories against Florida Southern (101-63) and Lynn (94-83). The Buccaneers were able to hold the Moccasins to a season low 63 points. Barry holds a 15-3 overall record, 8-2 in SSC play.
Women's Basketball
Irene Sanchez / Barry University / Forward / Sr. / Barcelona, Spain
Sanchez earns SSC Player of the Week honors this season after helping Barry to victories over two conference opponents. The Buccaneers took down #23 Florida Southern (62-54) with 15 points, eight assists, four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot from Sanchez. At Lynn (73-68) the senior picked up 15 more points, six assists, four rebounds, two blocked shots, and a steal. Sanchez hit three of four three pointers attempted and went 50 percent shooting from the field. The Barcelona native guided the Buccaneers win their fifth and sixth SSC games. The Buccaneers are 13-6 overall, 6-4 in SSC play.
Kaila Britten / Barry University / Forward / Sr. / Salem, Ore.
Britten earns SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors this season after averaging five defensive rebounds against #23 Florida Southern and Lynn. Britten played in 24 minutes and managed five defensive rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots, and one steal in the 62-54 victory against #23 Florida Southern. Britten also helped keep the Moccasins leading scorer, Mariah Harris, to half her season average. She also had five defensive rebounds against Lynn and also picked up a blocked shot, a steal, and an assist in the 73-68 victory. The Buccaneers are 13-6 overall, 6-4 in SSC play.
Swimming
Daniel Bis / Saint Leo University/ So. / Kalisz, Poland
Saint Leo’s Bis earns SSC Swimmer of the Week honors. Bis posted three individual first-place finishes in dual meets last week against Florida Tech and Tampa, charting three NCAA “B” cut times in the process. Bis notched “B” cut times while winning the 200 Butterfly (1:50.17) and the 400 Individual Medley (4:03.21), and finished third in the 100 Freestyle (47.69). Both the 400 IM and the 200 Butterfly times are the fifth-fastest in the SSC this season. Against Tampa, Bis won the 1000 Freestyle with a “B” cut time of 9:17.23, which is the sixth-fastest time in NCAA Division II this season. He also placed second in the 200 Butterfly (1:55.09) and the 500 Freestyle (4:39.45). The 500 Free time is the 10th fastest in the SSC this season.
Nicole Weber / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Konz, Germany
For the third time this season Weber is awarded SSC Swimmer of the Week. Weber recorded six individual first-place finishes in meets against three Sunshine State Conference rivals, leading Saint Leo women’s swimming to team victories against all three. In a double-dual meet with Lynn and Florida Tech on Tuesday, Jan. 23, Weber set NCAA “B” cut times in the 100 Breaststroke (1:04.16), the 200 Breaststroke (2:16.96), and the 400 Individual Medley (4:31.33), winning all three events. Those results paced Saint Leo to a 138-113 win over Lynn and a 174-70 victory over Florida Tech. Three days later, Weber again won three individual events, two with NCAA “B” cut times, as Saint Leo defeated Tampa, 151-111 – the program’s first victory over the Spartans. Weber won the 100 Breaststroke (1:05.09) and 200 Breaststroke (2:17.98) with “B” cut times, and also won the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:07.84. She also swam the breaststroke leg for Saint Leo’s 200 Medley Relay team, which took first place with a time of 1:48.75.
Baseball
Ty Cohen / Florida Tech / So. / RHP / Woodstock, Ga.
Cohen is awarded the first SSC Pitcher of the Week honor for 2016 after opening the season with a conference win. Cohen took the bump on opening day for Florida Tech as the Panthers traveled to Winter Park for a season opening conference series against Rollins College. The Woodstock, Georgia native retired the first six batters he faced on his way to a six-inning, five strikeouts, and one walk performance. Cohen allowed four hits and allowed one run on a sacrifice fly in the 6-1 victory. The Panthers took the series 2-1 over the Tars.
Carlos Matamoros / Barry University / Sr. / CF / West Miami, Fla.
Matamoros is selected the SSC Player of the Week after compiling a .643 batting average and .625 on-base percentage in three games this week. In the season opener against Catawba, Matamoros went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored as the Buccaneers prevailed 12-7. In a 12-1 win over Tusculum, he went 4-for-4 with two runs batted in and scored three times. He had a homerun and a stolen base in the win. In Barry’s only loss of the week, 11-9 against Newberry, Matamoros went 2-for-5 and scored twice. The West Miami native totaled nine hits in 14 at bats and scored seven times for the Buccaneers this week. Barry is 2-1 after the opening weekend.
Softball
Rachel Pence / Florida Tech / Jr. / RHP / Jacksonville, Fla.
Pence won three games in three starts this week to receive the first SSC Pitcher of the Week award for 2016. The Jacksonville, Florida native three 22 total innings, allowing four earned runs while striking out 21 batters and allowing a single walk. Pence registered a complete game shutout in a 2-0 win over Texas Woman's (1/29), allowing only three hits and striking out seven batters. She added another complete game shutout in an 8-0 (5 Inn.) win over Mars Hill, surrendering four hits and striking out four. Pence went the distance in a 12-7 win against Flagler, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits while striking out 10. The righthander pitched three perfect innings in relief in a 4-3 win over Texas Woman's (1/31), striking out three. Florida Tech is 4-1 on the season.
Krista Patterson / Florida Tech / Jr. / SS / Jacksonville, Fla.
SSC Player of the Week goes to Patterson who helped Florida Tech to a 4-1 record at the Florida Tech/Marriott Kickoff Classic. Patterson registered a .556 batting average and .688 on-base percentage with five hits, three extra base hits, six RBIs, six runs, and six walks in the classic. Patterson’s top game came in a 12-7 win over Flagler. The Jacksonville native went 2-for-2 with a double, three RBI's, two runs, a walk, and a sacrifice fly in the win.
