Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week - November 9 - 15, 2015

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of  November 9 - 15. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Volleyball
  Kotnik is named Offensive Player of the Week following two big road matches this weekend to lead the Tritons to a pair of wins. She posted 24 kills in a four-set win over Nova Southeastern, hitting .360 for the match, and followed with 16 kills in a four-set win over Lynn on Saturday while hitting .464. Kotnik served five aces against Lynn and recorded her 13th double-double of the season by adding 11 digs. Kotnik enters the final weekend of the regular season needing 40 kills to reach the 1000 career mark. Eckerd is 15-13 on the season, 6-9 in SSC play.

Berkley Whaley / University of Tampa / Outside Hitter / Sr. / St. Petersburg, Fla.
Whaley is named Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in 2015 after she anchored the Tampa defense across two conference victories. Whaley had a team-high 29 digs in the two matches this past week. During a 3-1 win over Florida Tech, Whaley registered a double-double, her 16th of the season, behind 16 kills and a match-high 15 digs. The outside hitter added a pair of blocks to aid in limiting the Panthers to a .118 attack percentage. The St. Petersburg, Fla. native was instrumental in the 3-0 sweep of No. 17 Florida Southern, adding another match-high 14 digs to limit Moccasins to a .053 attack percentage. On serve-receive, Whaley committed a single reception error in 45 total chances for a .978 reception percentage. On the week, Whaley averaged 4.14 digs per set to limit foes to a combined .091 attack clip with just 8.43 kills per set. With the victory over Florida Tech, Tampa secured sole possession of the 2015 SSC Championship.
 

Men's Basketball

Stewart takes the season's first Player of the Week award after averaging 22.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while shooting .419 from the field over a pair of Saint Leo wins last week. On Saturday, Stewart scored a game-high 29 points with seven rebounds to lead the Lions to a 93-90 overtime win over No. 12 Alabama-Huntsville. The win as Saint Leo’s first over a nationally-ranked team since a 76-73 overtime win at No. 8 Florida Southern on February 19, 2014. Stewart accounted for 12 of Saint Leo’s 13 points in overtime, including a 10-for-10 mark at the free-throw line. For the game, Stewart was 7-of-16 from the field with 4-of-8 accuracy beyond the arc, and an 11-of-12 mark at the stripe. The day before, Stewart netted 16 points with six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks in a 97-90 victory over North Alabama. He had a 6-of-15 mark from the field, and went 3-of-3 at the free throw line.

Corbin Jackson  / Florida Institute of Technology / Forward / Sr. / Rockledge, Fla.
Jackson is named Defensive Player of the Week following two Florida Tech victories in the NCAA South Regional Challenge, the two-time reigning SSC Defensive Player of the Week averaged 16 points, 12.5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.5 blocks per game. The senior posted consecutive double-doubles after leading the league in the category a year ago. His 17 point, 15-rebound effort helped the Panthers come back from a 15-point second half deficit to defeat Paine 94-92 in overtime.

Women's Basketball

Payne earns SSC Player of the Week honors following her first career double-double which came against Clark Atlanta. In a 94-80 Florida Southern victory, Payne had career-highs of 24 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 8-12 from the floor and 6-6 from the free throw line. During Florida Southern's season opener, Payne scored 15 points in 21 minutes against Paine. FSC won the game convincingly, 95-61. For the week, Payne totaled 30 points and 12 rebounds, made 13-of-20 field goals, went 3-6 from three-point, and was 10-11 (.909) at the free throw line. She also had four assists, four blocks, and two steals. With the play of Payne, Florida Southern scored over 90 points in in back-to-back games for first time since the first two games of the 2008-09 season

Monaye Merritt / Nova Southeastern / Guard / Sr. / Philadelphia, Pa.
Merritt, Defensive Player of the Week, was a key defender in each of Nova Southeastern's wins over the opening weekend. Against North Alabama, the Shark senior had seven rebounds and two steals, while leading a defense that held the Lions to 34 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers in a 41-point rout. In a much tighter game Saturday, Merritt was the point person against Lee, forcing the Flames to just 4-of-16 shooting in the 4th quarter. Merritt also matched her career high with three blocked shots and adding two more steals. Merritt and The Sharks forced Lee to 18 turnovers in that game as well. NSU defeated North Alabama (102-61) and Lee (81-68) to start the year 2-0.
   

Swimming

5960Rebecca Matthews / Lynn University / Gr. / Montpellier, France 
Matthews led Lynn to a 168-94 victory over Rollins in the team's first home dual meet of the year. Matthews claimed victory in all three of her events, the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke, and 200 IM. She earned the first of her two NCAA 'B' cut times in the 100 breaststroke by clocking in at 1:04.03 and then another in the 200 IM with a time of 2:06.04. Her time in the 200 breast was 2:21.59. Matthews has won all five of her individual events this season.
