Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of September 28 - October 4. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Volleyball
Wagner is named Offensive Player of the Week following a .520 Hitting Percentage across two wins for the Spartans. Wagner recorded 11 Kills in 20 Attempts (.550) with zero Errors in a 3-0 home victory over Barry University. Against No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic University, the 6-2, Middle Blocker tallied 18 Kills in 30 Attempts (.500) with three Errors in a four set victory. Wagner had 29 Kills and Seven Total Blocks this week. With the play of Wagner, No. 2 Tampa moves to 11-3 overall, 4-0 in SSC Play.
Berkley Whaley / University of Tampa / Outside Hitter / Sr. / St. Petersburg, Fla.
Whaley is tabbed with the SSC Defensive Player of the Week following a 2-0 week for the Tampa Spartans. The Outside Hitter averaged 4.14 Digs across seven sets of action and recorded a perfect reception percentage with 25 Total Receptions. Whaley had 13 Digs and 11 Kills in a three set victory over Barry University. Against No. 17 Palm Beach Atlantic University, Whaley tallied 16 Digs while helping hold the leading scorer for the Sailfish to a .043 Attack Percentage. Whaley finishes the week with 31 Kills and 29 Digs. The No. 4 Spartans are 11-3 overall, 4-0 in SSC Play.
Men's Soccer
Chris Hellman / Lynn University / Forward / Jr. / Cologne, Germany
Hellman wins his second Offensive Player of the Week award following a goal and three assists for the Fighting Knights this past week. Hellman's only goal of the week came in the 31st minute against Nova Southeastern, which brought the score to a 1-1 tie. Hellman then assisted on Luca Puster's game winning header in the 36th minute and Sebastian's Schulz's goal in the 63rd minute. At Florida Tech, Hellman assisted Victor Moreira's score midway through the first half as Lynn went on to beat FIT, 1-0. Lynn is 4-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in SSC play.
Alex Gott / Eckerd College / Goal / So. / Bedworth, England
Gott grabs his second consecutive SSC Defensive Player of the Week award after posting his third straight shutout. Gott stopped eight shots on goal during a 1-0 home win over Rollins College. The shutout was his fifth of the season. In the last six games, Gott has allowed one goal and Eckerd has amassed a 5-0-1 record in that time. For the year, Eckerd is 6-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 in SSC Play.
Women's Soccer
Lelii earns her third SSC Offensive Player of the Week after four goal for the Sharks in two victories this week. The Seminole, Fla. scored a hat trick against Lynn University. Lelii converted for the first goal of the game in the 22nd minute and scored again just minutes later. Against Palm Beach Atlantic University, Lelii knocked a contested header to win the game in the third minute of overtime. Nova Southeastern is 8-2 on the season, 2-1 in SSC Play.
Julia Kantor / Florida Institute of Technology / GK / Sr. / Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Kantor piloted a recorded two shutouts for the Florida Tech Panthers this week on her way to the Defensive Player of the Week honor. Kantor stopped four shots during 3-0 victory at Palm Beach Atlantic University. In a SSC matchup at Lynn University, Kantor secured FIT's 1-0 victory by saving four shots on goal. The shutouts were her fourth and fifth of the season. Florida Tech is now 7-3 overall, 3-2 in SSC play.
Cross Country
Dean McGregor / Florida Southern College / Fr. / Fort Myers, Fla.
McGregor finished 11th among all non-Division I runners at the Florida State Invitational on Friday, October 2nd. McGregor's time of 26:09.2 over the 8,000 meter course at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee lead FSC to a second place finish, 12 points behind Alabama-Huntsville. McGregor's time placed him 17th out of all 188 male collegiate runners at the event.
Colett Rampf
/ Saint Leo University / So. / Premnitz, Germany
Rampf wins her third SSC Female Runner of the Week award following her performance at the 42nd Annual Paul Short Run "College Gold" 6K on Friday, October 2nd. Rampf's time of 21:44.60 placed her 12th in a field of 312 runners from Division I and non-Division I institutions. Rampf finished second among non-Division I competition. The Premnitz, Germany native shaved 1:26 off her previous best 6000m mark and eclipsed the Saint Leo record by 50 seconds.
