Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of August 31 - September 6. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member insitutions.
Volleyball
Berkley Whaley / University of Tampa / Outside Hitter / Sr. / St. Petersburg, Fla.
Whaley, the
2014 AVCA Division II Player of the Year, was named to the All-Tournament team at the Courtyard by Marriott Classic hosted by the University of Tampa this past week. With the play of Whaley the Spartans went 3-1 against Top-25 competition in the event. In 3-0 victories over No. 19 Western Washington and No. 10 Wheeling Jesuit, Whaley tabulated hitting percentages over .400 and reached double digits in Kills and Digs. Tampa also defeated #5 Wayne State (3-0) in the tournament. UT's only loss came at the hands of No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth (3-2). The 6-0, Outside Hitter, tallied 66 Kills in 142 Attempts with 14 Errors (.366) in 14 sets this week. She finished the week with 46 Digs, four Blocks, three Assists, and a Service Ace.
Logan Holanchock / University of Tampa / Libero / Fr. / St. Augustine, Fla.
Holanchock broke an 11-year-old University of Tampa record set by Margeaux Sinibaldi, the all-time digs leader in school history. The 5-6, Libero, posted a 32-dig effort in her collegiate debut to break the 2004 record of total digs in a three set match (2004 v. FGCU). Holanchock went on to provide Tampa with 66 more digs during the tournament as the Spartans went 3-1 against Top-25 oppontents. For the Week, Holanchock totaled 98 Digs (7.0 per game), six Assists, and four Service Aces. The St. Augustine, Fla. native was named to the Courtyard by Marriott All-Tournament Team following her defensive performance in the tournament.
Men's Soccer
Adin Kavara / Florida Institute of Technology / Forward / Jr. / Oslo, Norway
Kavara notched three goals in Florida Tech's back-to-back road wins to start the season. On Friday, Kavara tallied a pair of goals in the Panthers season opener at Union. Kavara scored at the 7:01 mark and again at the 26:25 mark, helping FIT to a 5-1 victory. Against Mississippi College, Kavara broke through in 30th minute to break a 0-0 tie with the only goal of the game. Kavara finishes the week with eight Shots, four Shots on Goal, and three Goals.
Mitch Thorn / Florida Institute of Technology / Goal / Jr. / Brisbane, Australia
Thorn tallied 180 minutes in goal this week as the Panthers begin the season 2-0. In FIT's season opener, Thorn recorded two saves and allowed a goal in a 5-1 victory over Union. In Sunday's win over Mississippi College, Thorn recorded four saves and earned a shutout as the Panthers won the match, 1-0.
Women's Soccer
Lelii scored two goals in each of Nova Southeastern's two road wins to start the 2015 season. Against Catawba on Friday (Sept. 4), she tallied the first score of the season, just four minutes in, and added the game-winner, making the final 3-2 margin, with just over seven minutes left off an indirect free kick. Then against Pfeiffer (Sept. 6), she hit two goals in the span of 3:27 to push the Sharks out 3-0 in an eventual 5-2 win. Lelii finishes the week with 13 Shots in the two victories, nine Shots on Goal, and four Goals.
Mary Spring / Rollins College / Goal / Sr. / Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
In the season opener, Spring stopped thee shots on goal, giving the Tars a defensive edge in their 2-0 victory over Lee. Spring posted her second clean sheet in as many games with a four save performance against Newberry. Rollins went on to win the game, 3-0. Spring now has 23.5 career shutouts, second most in Rollins school history.
Cross Country
Rafal Matuszczak / Saint Leo University / Jr. / Wschowa, Poland
Matuszczak finished second overall at the Southeastern University Fire Short Course Invitational on Friday, September 4. Matuszczak posted a time of 19:41.80 on the 6000m course. He led a trio of Saint Leo men’s cross country runners who finished 2-3-4 in the first event of the season. Matuszczak's performance paced the Lions to a first place finish out of seven teams in the event.
Colett Rampf / Saint Leo University / So. / Premnitz, Germany
Rampf captured first place in the Southeastern University Fire Short Course Invitational on Friday, September 4. Rampf posted a two-mile personal best time of 10:24.30 on the Holloway Park course, finishing nearly 45 seconds ahead of second-place runner Megan Fitzgerald from the host Southeastern squad. Rampf led the Lions to a first place team finish in the season-opening event.
