Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week - October 5-11, 2015


Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of October 5-11. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.



Volleyball
  Wagner repeats as Offensive Player of the Week following two conference victories on the road. Wagner tallied 13 Kills on 23 Attempts (.435) with three Errors in a 3-2 victory at No. 14 Florida Southern College. Against Florida Institute of Technology, the 6-2, Middle Blocker tallied 18 Kills in 27 Attempts (.500) with three Errors in a four set victory. The 18-Kill performance against Florida Tech ties a career high. Wagner totaled 31 Kills, three Total Blocks, and two Digs this week. With the play of Wagner, No. 2 Tampa moves to 13-3 overall, 6-0 in SSC Play.

Berkley Whaley / University of Tampa / Outside Hitter / Sr. / St. Petersburg, Fla.
Whaley earns her second consecutive SSC Defensive Player of the Week honor, third overall following a 2-0 week for the Spartans. The Outside Hitter posted 20 Kills, 14 Digs, and two Blocks at No. 14 Florida Southern College. She followed that performance with a 17 Kill, 11 Dig effort at Florida Institute of Technology. Whaley also recorded a perfect reception percentage on 43 attempts this week. The No. 2 Spartans are 13-3 overall, 6-0 in SSC Play.
 
Men's Soccer

5803 Jonathan Radvogin  / Florida Southern College / Midfield / Jr. / Västerås, Sweden
Radvogin scored three goals and helped set up an unassisted goal in the Moccasins' 5-0 win at Rollins College this past Wednesday. The Midfielder scored FSC's second goal of the game in the 76th minute then followed with goals in the 89th and 90th minute. Radvogin's three goals gave Florida Southern their first hat trick against the Tars since 1965. Florida Southern is now 5-6 overall, 3-3 in SSC Play.


5804Cole Clingerman / Florida Southern College / Goal / Jr. / Auburndale, Fla.
Clingerman recorded back-to-back shutouts for Florida Southern in conference play this week to earn the Defensive Player of the Week Honor. Clingerman recorded six second half saves to keep the sheet clean in a 5-0 win over Rollins College. Clingerman then stopped five shots against the defending national champions, Lynn University, in a 1-0 victory. The play of Clingerman gives the Moccasins two consecutive shutouts in conference play for the first time since 1997. For the year, FSC is 5-6 overall, 3-3 in SSC Play.

Women's Soccer
 
Smith a defender for Barry takes SSC Offensive Player of the Week following her instrumental play on the offensive side. Smith and Amanda Traynor assited Molly Sharpe on her game-winning goal against Eckerd College. Smith piloted the Buccaneers defense that held the Tritons to four shots on goal, three of which were free kicks. Against No. 16 Rollins College, Smith swept a ball off the line in the 29th minute that kept the game tied 0-0, forcing overtime. Smith went on to score a double overtime game winner off a corner kick in the 107th minute. Barry is 9-2 on the season, 5-1 in SSC play.
 
5806Caroline Frykgard / University of Tampa / GK / So. / Stockholm, Sweden
Frykgard takes Defensive Player of the Week after keeping opponents scoreless during her time in goal for the Spartans this week. Frykgard tallied eight saves in a 3-1 conference victory over Lynn University, allowing no goals in her 73 minutes in goal. In a regional matchup against Valdosta State University, Frykgard stopped two shots in 110 minutes of play.  The shutout was Tampa's first of the season. UT is now 7-2-2 overall, 3-1 in SSC play.


Cross Country
 
5807Valentin Lenz / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Düsseldorf, Germany
Lenz finished fourth overall out of 256 runners at Saturday’s Disney Cross Country Classic 8K race, crossing the line with a time of 25:12.80. The time was Lenz’s second-fastest at that distance, and fifth-fastest in program history. Lenz edged fifth-place runner Luis Carbajal from Malone by 1.3 seconds, and was nine seconds behind Marlone’s Ryan Roush.
 
Colett Rampf5758 / Saint Leo University / So. / Premnitz, Germany
Rampf set a new Saint Leo record at the 5000m distance with her second-place finish out of 304 runners at Saturday’s Disney Cross Country Classic 5K race. Rampf posted a time of 17:44.40, the fastest time in a true 5K race in program history, and eight seconds faster than her previous best time this season in a 5K. She trailed race-winner Sophia Meehan from Johns Hopkins by just 2.9 seconds, and was seven seconds ahead of the third-place runner. This is Rampf's fourth SSC Runner of the Week honor in 2015.
