Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | December 14 - 20, 2015

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of December 14 - 20. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Men's Basketball

6055Kevin Walsh / Eckerd College / Guard / Jr. / Arlington Heights, Ill.
Walsh is named SSC Player of the Week following three wins for Eckerd  in five days as the Tritons extended their winning streak to 12 games. His top game came in a 79-74 win over Tiffin, where he went 6-11 from the field, 4-6 from three, and added 3-4 from the line. Walsh finished the week 11-16 from 3-point range (69%). He led the team in the week in scoring with 14.3 points per game as the Tritons set a new program record for consecutive wins. Eckerd moves to 12-1 overall after the three non-conference victories. They are 4-0 in SSC play.


5976Dylan Travis / Florida Southern College / Guard / Sr. / Omaha, Neb.
Travis earns Defensive Player of the Week after the dominated the stats in scoring, steals, and rebounds to help Florida Southern to two non-conference victories. Travis led the team in rebounding as he averaged 10.3 boards per game while recording a double-double and triple-double two of the three games. Travis' triple-double (11 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists) came in a 128-84 victory over Miles. It is the first ever triple double in the 89 year history of Moccasin men's basketball. Travis pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in the 100-90 win over Eastern New Mexico and then had eight boards along with three steals in a, 94-84, losing effort against Mount Olive. He finished the week with eight steals and 22 defensive rebounds. Travis' 32 points in the win over Eastern New Mexico were a career high. Florida Southern is now 6-7 overall, 2-2 in SSC play.
 
2015-16 SSC Men's Basketball Award Winners - Week by Week

Women's Basketball

6058Kayla Wright / Nova Southeastern University / Forward / Jr. /  Lauderhill, Fla.
Wright is awarded Player of the Week behind three out-of-conference wins for Nova Southeastern last week. In Thursday's six-point win over Shaw, she fell just two points shy of the NSU all-time record for points in a game, scoring 34 on an astonishing 17-of-21 shooting line. She added five rebounds in only 23 minutes of action. Saturday, the Sharks defeated Miles by 53, and Wright scored a team-high 17, shooting 6-of-10 and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. She finished up the weekend with 10 points against Lane, another efficient line of 5-of-7. She is now shooting over 60 percent for the season, and averages 14.2 points per game in just 16.5 minutes a night. Nova Southeastern moves to 12-1 overall after the three non-conference victories. They are 4-0 in SSC play.

Alvarez is named Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring the Spartans defense in a pair of wins. In an upset victory over No. 4 Drury, Alvarez spun a double-double with seven defensive rebounds while limiting the torrid Panthers offense to 61 points, their lowest scoring game and first loss of the season. In the Sunday win over Fort Valley State, Alvarez dominated with nine defensive rebounds as the Spartans stifled the Wildcats 70-44.  Tampa moves to 6-6 overall, they are 0-3 in SSC play.
 

Swimming

 In the first day of the Spartan Invite, Jeremy Parker, along with Martin Hammer, Jordan Augier and Runar Borgen set the Division II record in the 200 freestyle relay with a new program-best 1:18.82 time, an automatic qualifier for the NCAA Championship. The Tampa, Fla. native broke another record on day two of the invite, besting his own program-mark in the 200 freestyle, setting the new top time of 1:37.84 The senior concluded the Spartan Invitational with a third school record in the 100 free, posting a new personal and program best 43.89 time. Parker combined efforts with Augier, Hammer and Khalid Aldaboos to break his final school record of the weekend in the 400 free relay, setting the new mark of 2:54.73.

5960Rebecca Matthews / Lynn University / Gr. / Montpellier, France
Matthews earns her second SSC Swimmer of the Week honor after wining all four of her individual events at the Tampa Spartans Invite. Matthews swam NCAA 'B' cut times in the 100 (1:02.45) & 200 breast (2:16.82) and 100 fly (56.15) and posted an NCAA 'A' cut time in the 200 IM with a season-best time of 2:01.04.
