Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week - November 16 - 22, 2015

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of  November 16 - 22. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Volleyball
 
5789Berkley Whaley / University of Tampa / Outside Hitter / Sr. / St. Petersburg, Fla.
Whaley earns Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2015 after she led Tampa to two conference victories this week. The outside hitter registered 37 kills across seven sets of play (5.28 kills per set) at a .461 attack percentage. Whaley committed just two attack errors in 76 swings and posted a double-double in the most recent win over Nova Southeastern. The Spartans closed out the week hitting .290 as a team thanks to the efficiency of Whaley. Tampa finished the regular season 26-5, 15-1. The Spartans won the SSC championship for the 11th consecutive year, 25th overall.

Anna Tovo / Florida Southern College / Outside Hitter / So. / Aiken, S.C.
Tovo garners the Defensive Player of the Week honor for the second time this season following two key Florida Southern home victories. In the five-set win over No. 9 Palm Beach Atlantic, Tovo led Florida Southern in recording a team season high 119 digs. Tovo's 27 digs is a career best and second most for a Moccasin this season. In a 3-1 victory against Barry, Tovo tallied 15 digs, 15 kills, and two of her three blocks for the week. Her two double-doubles this week give her a team-best 17 for the season. With the play of Tovo, Florida Southern moves to 23-8 overall, 9- in SSC Play.
 

Men's Basketball

Travis is named SSC Player of the Week after recording his first two career double-doubles in Florida Southern's first two league games this season. Against No. 24 Barry, Travis scored 25 points and grabbed a career high 10 rebounds as FSC won, 74 to 72. He followed that performance with 28 points and a new career high of 11 rebounds in a 98-81 win over Lynn. Travis shot 46% from the field and was 15-for-20 from the free throw line. For the week Travis had 12 assists and six steals. Florida Southern is 2-2 overall, 2-0 in SSC play.

Corbin Jackson  / Florida Institute of Technology / Forward / Sr. / Rockledge, Fla.
Jackson repeats as Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 12.5 rebounds, four blocks, and three steals per game this week for Florida Tech. The redshirt senior grabbed 10 defensive rebounds, blocked two shots, and had two steals in a SSC opening win against Tampa (68-61). Despite the loss three days later to Embry-Riddle, Jackson registered a season-high six blocks along with eight defensive rebounds and four steals. Jackson is currently among the top-two in the SSC in: minutes, field goal percentage, rebounds and blocked shots. The Panthers are 3-1, 1-0 in SSC play.

Women's Basketball

Harris is named SSC Player of the Week after leading Florida Tech to victories over Tampa and Embry-Riddle. She paced all players with 18 points in the SSC opener at Tampa, to go along with six rebounds, five assists, four steals and one block. The Panthers defeated the Spartans, 68-60. Harris followed up her performance with a season-high 23 points in a 75-65 win against Embry Riddle. The junior guard was 7-of-10 from the field, and 8-of-10 from the line, in addition to two rebounds and two steals in the Panthers' home opener against the Eagles. Florida Tech is 3-0 overall, 1-0 in SSC play.

Payne takes SSC defensive Player of the Week honors after her efforts improved Florida Southern to 4-0 on the season.  Against Barry, Payne grabbed five defensive rebounds and recorded four steals. Payne followed the performance with three rebounds and four steals against Lynn. Payne's defense helped the Moccasins hold both their opponents to 40 percent and under field goal percentage.
   

Swimming

Trenda earns his second Swimmer of the Week award after setting seven NCAA “B” cut times and one “A” cut during this weekend’s Florida Tech Invitational. Five of his times rank as the fastest in NCAA Division II to date this season.
- Part of Saint Leo’s first place team in the 200 Free Relay (1:20.94), and his split of 19.69 was a “B” cut and top time in Division II.
- Part of Saint Leo’s team in the 400 Medley Relay (3:32.95), and his backstroke split of 47.65 was a “B” cut, a new Saint Leo record, and is the top time in NCAA Division II in the 100 Backstroke.
- Finished first in the 200 Individual Medley (1:48.11), with the top time in Division II and reaching the “B” cut mark.
- Part of Saint Leo’s team in the 200 Medley Relay (1:29.88), and his back split of 21.96 qualified as a “B” cut mark and is the second-fastest time in NCAA Division II.
- Won the 100 Butterfly with a “B” cut time of 47.49, setting a new school record and the top time in Division II.
- Posted a time of 6:30.38 in the 800 Freestyle, and his split time of 1:36.50 was an “A” cut and the top time in Division II.
- Part of Saint Leo’s 400 Free Relay team (2:58.35), and his split time of 44.02 was both a “B” cut and the top time in Division II.
- Reached the “B” cut mark in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 55.59, setting a new Saint Leo record with the seventh-fastest time in Division II.

Garriock takes Swimmer of the Week after reaching “B” cut marks in eight different events at last weekend’s Florida Tech Invitational.
- Part of Saint Leo’s 200 Free Relay team (1:35.91) that set a “B” cut mark and a new Saint Leo record, and had the sixth-fastest time in Division II.
- Part of Saint Leo’s 400 Medley Relay team (3:50.59) that posted the fourth-fastest team nationally; her backstroke leadoff to the event was in a “B” cut time of 55.98 seconds and set a new Saint Leo record. It was also the top time in Division II.
- Recorded a time of 23.60 in the 50 Freestyle, reaching the “B” cut mark and posting the sixth-fastest time in Division II.
- Part of Saint Leo’s 200 Medley Relay team (1:45.77), and set a “B” cut mark with her time of 26.34 second in her backstroke leadoff. That time is ranked fifth in Division II, and set a new Saint Leo record.
- Posted a “B” cut time in the 100 Butterfly (54.75), setting a new Saint Leo record and ranked third in Division II.
- Recorded a “B” cut time in the 200 Freestyle (1:52.56), setting a new Saint Leo record.
- Recorded a time of 50.77 in the 100 Freestyle, but her leadoff time of 50.77 is fastest in Division II and qualified as a “B” cut time.
- Member of Saint Leo’s 400 Free Relay squad that posted a time of 3:30.02, setting a “B” cut mark and ranked fifth in Division II.
