Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week | December 7 - 13, 2015

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of December 7 - 13. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.


Men's Basketball

6037Drushaun McLaurn / Eckerd College / Forward / Fr. / Jacksonville, Fla.
McLaurn is named SSC Player of the Week after leading Eckerd to a 67-62 road win over No. 11 Rollins. McLaurn scored a career-high 27 points in the win over the previously unbeaten Tars. Twenty-four of his points came in the second half as the Tritons erased a 16-point deficit. The freshman went 9-of-12 from the floor and 9-of-12 from the line, including five straight free throws in the final 1:07. McLaurn tallied seven rebounds, including a key offensive rebound when Eckerd was up two points with 17 seconds remaining in the game. McLaurn made two free throws giving the Triton's a four-point lead, which sealed the victory. Eckerd moves to 9-1 overall, 4-0 in SSC play.


6038Yunio Barrueta / Barry University / Guard-Forward / Sr. / Miami, Fla.
Barrueta is named SSC Defensive Player of the Week after his efforts helped bring Barry a 87-85 win at Saint Leo. Barrueta pulled down 13 defensive rebounds on his way to a game high total of 18. Barrueta also scored 23 points and added a blocked shot in the Buccaneers conference win over the Lions. Barrueta's 18 rebounds is the fourth highest single-game performance in Barry history. The Buccaneers are now 7-2 overall, 2-1 in SSC play.
 
2015-16 SSC Men's Basketball Award Winners - Week by Week

Women's Basketball

6039Charla Nelson-James / Lynn University / Center / Jr. / Winter Haven, Fla.
Nelson-James is awarded SSC Player of the Week after a double-double during a home win over Southeastern (Fla.). The junior totaled 17 points while shooting 8-of-12 from the field in her 27 minutes on the court. Nelson-James pulled down 14 rebounds, nine of which came on the defensive side. She added two blocks in the Fighting Knight's 61-54 victory. Her 17 points and 14 rebounds are season highs. With the play of Nelson-James, Lynn improves to 2-6 and remains 0-4 in conference play. 
 

Flournoy is named SSC Defensive Player of the Week after a strong performance in Barry's 64-49 win over Saint Leo. Flournoy recorded seven steals and five defensive rebounds in the conference victory. Flournoy and teammates amassed 24 takeaways and held the Lions to a regular season low of 49 points. With the win, Barry moves to 6-3, 2-1 in SSC play.
