Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 15 - 21, 2016. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Men's Basketball
Marcus Dewberry / Saint Leo University / Guard / Jr. / Lake Wales, Fla.
Dewberry is awarded his fourth SSC Player of the Week honor after helping the Lions to a pair of victories last week. In the win against Florida Tech (96-84), he recorded his first career triple-double with 27 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds. The Lake Wales, Florida native also had two steals in the victory. Dewberry, for the fifth time this season scored more than 30 points in a game (33), recorded eight rebounds, five steals and three assists while shooting fifty percent from the field and 100% at the line in the 97-84 victory at Palm Beach Atlantic. Saint Leo is 17-9 on the season, 9-5 in SSC play.
Tray Leonard / Barry University / Sr. / Center / Raleigh, N.C.
Leonard is awarded his second SSC Defensive Player of the Week honor after recording Barry’s first triple-double in school history. The Buccaneer Senior scored 13 points, brought down 12 defensive rebounds, and blocked 12 shots to get the triple-double and the victory over the Spartans (73-67). Leonard had 17 total rebounds over all, two steals, and an assist against Tampa. The Raleigh, North Carolina native scored 17 points, brought down six defensive rebounds, and a steal in a 92-87 loss at Rollins. Barry owns an overall record of 19-5, and is 11-4 in SSC play.
Women's Basketball
Amra Elezovic / Barry Univeristy / Guard / Forward / Sr. / Manchester, NH
Elezovic earns her second consecutive SSC Player of the Week honors this season after helping the Buccaneers to a conference victory. The New Hampshire native recorded 24 points, five assists, four steals, one blocked shot and had three defensive rebounds in the 78-75 victory over Rollins. She scored 18 points and had three assists while shooting 46 percent in a home loss to Tampa (69-60). The Buccaneers are 17-8 overall, 9-6 in SSC play.
DeLise Williams / Florida Tech / Sr. / Guard / Pompano, Fla.
WIlliams captures her first SSC Defensive Player of the Week honor this season after averaging three and a half defensive rebounds against Lynn and Saint Leo. She recorded 15 points, brought down five defensive rebounds, and had four assists and six steals in a 70-63 victory over Lynn. The Pompano Beach, Florida native recorded 11 points. two defensive rebounds, four steals, and an assist as the Panthers were victorious over Saint Leo, 55-45. The Panthers are 18-7 overall, 12-4 in SSC play.
Baseball
Alex Mateo / Nova Southeastern University / Sr. / RHP / Miami, Fla.
Mateo takes SSC Pitcher of the Week following a seven-inning, one hit performance against Tuskegee. Mateo struck out 10, walked three, and allowed no runs in his seven innings of work. The Miami native took a no hitter six and two-thirds innings before a diving effort relinquished a hit. Mateo combined with Thomas Barberi and Devin Raftery for a one-hit shutout as the Sharks defeated Tuskegee, 20-0. Nova Southeastern has won three consecutive games and holds a 6-5 overall record.
Peter Nicoletto / Rollins / Jr. / OF / Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Nicoletto hit for the cycle on his way to SSC Player of the Week. Nicoletto had two four hit games in a three-game series against Claflin this past week. In the first game of the series, Nicoletto went 4-for-4 with three runs scored. The Fort Lauderdale native recorded a single, double, triple, and homerun in the final game of the series for the cycle. He also drove in three runs and scored three times. For the week, Nicoletto batted 9-for-11 for a .818 average while driving in five runs and scoring seven times. He slugged 1.818 and recorded a .769 on base percentage as the Tars swept Claflin (17-5, 18-6, 21-8). With the sweep, Rollins moves to 7-5 overall. The Tars are 1-2 in SSC play.
Softball
Stephanie Adkins / Saint Leo Univeristy / Jr, / Pitcher / Orlando, Fla.
Adkins earns her second SSC Pitcher of the Week honors after throwing a no-hitter last week against Embry- Riddle. On Friday, February 19th Adkins threw a no-hitter and struck out ten batters in seven innings giving up four walks. The Lions junior is now 4-0 on the young season and has pitched four complete games. The Lions are 9-0 overall and 0-0 in SSC play.
Cheyanne Head / Barry University / Jr. / DP / Surrey, British Columbia
Head is awarded SSC Player of the Week honors following Barry’s weekend sweep of Nova Southeastern. The Junior Buccaneer went 4-5 in the first game with a double and a walk and scored three runs. In the doubleheader she went 5-5 scoring six runs, three doubles, and two walks as Barry took two from Nova Southeastern. Barry is 6-5 on the season and 3-0 in SSC play.
Tennis
Ahmed Triki / Barry University / Jr. / Tunis, Tunisia
Triki takes SSC Player of the Week after defeating No. 10 Leo Blay of Valdosta St. at No. 1 singles. Triki, paired with Renato Lombardi, defeated Valdosta St. 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. No. 1 Barry beat No. 9 Valdosta State, 5-4. Triki also won at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles in Barry's 9-0 win over St. Thomas.
Zuza Maciejewska / Barry University / Fr. / Ciechocinek, Poland
Maciejewska is awarded SSC Player of the Week after defeating No. 22 Bea Hernandez of Valdosta State, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, at No. 1 singles in her second collegiate match and first at No. 1 singles. Maciejewska also defeated Palm Beach Atlantic’s Valerie Nagovitcina, 6-3, 2-6, 10-5, at No. 2 singles. Maciejewska, combined with two partners, was victorious in both of her doubles matches as Buccaneers went 2-0 to start season.
Men's Lacrosse
Andrew Kew / University of Tampa / Fr. / Att / Oakville, Ontario
Kew takes SSC Offensive Player of the Week after notching 15 goals, including eight goals against the No.5 Adelphi Panthers. Kew's eight-goal performance against Adelphi is also a new school record for most by a player in a single game. The Oakville, Ontario native turned in another great performance just days later registering seven goals against Walsh, tying Jake Rooney for second all-time in goals scored in a single-game. No. 8 Tampa defeated Adelphi (19-11) and Walsh (15-8) to move to 3-0 overall.
AJ Ferraro / University of Tampa / Fr. / Defender / Parkland, Fla.
A.J. Ferraro hauled in nine ground balls and caused three turnovers to earn SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Ferraro had a big performance against the No.5 Adelphi pulling in six ground balls and locked down Salvatore Tuttle, a top attacker in NCAA D-II from the 2015 season who led the Panthers in goals, assists and points. Ferraro forced Tuttle to commit three turnovers helping the Spartans to victory. Against Walsh, Ferraro pulled in three ground balls. No. 8 Tampa defeated Adelphi (19-11) and Walsh (15-8) to move to 3-0 overall.
Alex Patton / Tampa / So. / Midfielder / West Hempstead, N.Y.
Patton’s play against Walsh this week earned him SSC Specialist of the Week Honors. Patton scooped up eight ground balls and posted a record of 20-22 converting at 91 percent clip at the faceoff X against Walsh this week. With the play of Patton, Tampa defeated Walsh 15-8. No. 8 Tampa moves to 3-0 overall.
Women's Lacrosse
Sara Grenier / Florida Tech / So. / Attack / Oakland, Maine
SSC Offensive Player of the Week, Grenier, notched a game-high five goals to go along with one assist in Florida Tech’s season opening victory over Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday. The sophomore scored three first half goals, including a free possession score midway through the frame, to help the Panthers’ jump out to a 10-5 halftime lead and cruise to a 16-11 win.
Sam Schiano / Florida Tech / Fr. / Midfield / Perry Hall, Md.
Schiano’s performance in Florida Tech's 16-11 season opening victory over Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday earns her SSC Defensive Player of the Week. In her debut for the Panthers’ the freshman finished with seven draw controls and five ground balls, both game-highs, to go along with three caused turnovers. Schiano also recorded her first career point in the contest, dishing out an assist on the FIT’s second goal of the game.
