Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 21 - 27, 2016. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Baseball
Jaret Vermillion / Lynn University / Jr. / RHP / Corona, Calif.
Vermillion is named SSC Pitcher of the Week following his efforts in Lynn’s 4-2 win over Florida Tech. Vermillion started and pitched into the sixth inning for the Fighting Knights, scattering six hits and allowing an unearned run in the victory. The Corona, California right-hander fanned a career high seven batters and issued just one walk in the no-decision. Vermillion’s presence on the mound saved the Fighting Knights from a sweep by FIT. Lynn is 18-12 overall, 7-2 in SSC Play.
Logan Browning / Florida Southern College / So. / OF / Lakeland, Fla.
Browning is awarded SSC Player of the Week for the second time this season after a road series sweep of conference opponent Eckerd College. Browning posted a .545 batting average, .647 on base percentage, and 1.182 slugging percentage while batting leadoff in all games this week. In the first game of the series, the Lakeland native went 3-for-4 with four runs scored off three doubles as FSC won 17-4. Browning added a run and a walk during a 6-5 win in the middle game of the three game set. Florida Southern won the finale, 13-4, thanks in large part to Browning’s 3-for-4 effort at the plate. He had two RBI’s following a double and homerun. For the week, Browning tallied eight runs, five extra base hits, three walks, two RBIs, and was hit by a pitch twice. Browning recorded six putouts in six chances for 1.000 fielding percentage. Following the sweep, the Moccasins are 20-7 overall, 6-3 in SSC play.
Softball
Stephanie Adkins / Saint Leo Univeristy / Jr, / Pitcher / Orlando, Fla.
Adkins earns her third SSC Pitcher of the Week after leading Saint Leo to a three-game sweep of the SSC's second place team, Barry. Adkins threw 12.2 innings and recorded her 100th career strikeout with her 11 on the weekend. The Orlando native gave up 11 hits and just two runs for a 1.11 ERA in the series. She started game one and shutout the Buccaneers allowing two hits and striking out four in five innings pitched. In a relief appearance during the second game of the series, Adkins pitched 4.2 innings allowing six hits and two runs. She recored five strikeouts as the Lions picked up the win. After entering in the third game of the series, with the Lions trailing, she blanked Barry in three innings pitched. Adkins allowed three hits and no runs while striking out two batters. Saint Leo moves to 29-1 overall and 14-1 in SSC play.
Chelsea Reed / Rollins College / Jr. / OF / Lake Mary, Fla.
Reed is awarded this week’s SSC Player of the Week honors following her seven hits from the cleanup spot in a pair of two-game sets against Merrimack and Albany State. The Lake Mary, Florida native saved her best performance for the final game on the week going 3-3 with two RBIs, three runs scored, and a stolen base in a 21-1 victory over Albany State. In the first game of the doubleheader against Albany State the Rollins’ Junior went 1-2 with a run scored, a RBI and a double as the Tars got the victory, 4-1. In two games against Merrimack, Reed went 3-6 with three RBI, four runs scored, a stolen base, a strikeout, and two home runs. The Tars got both victories, 8-0 (6 innings) and 10-1 (6 innings). Reed picked up a single walk in each of the four games. Rollins is now 24-6-1 overall and 7-2 in SSC play.
Golf
Jose Andreas Miranda / Lynn University / Sr. / Quito, Ecuador
Andreas Miranda earns this week's SSC Men's Golfer of the Week honors after winning his first career tournament and helping the Fighting Knights take first place at the Bobcat Invitational. Andreas Miranda was the only golfer in the field to shoot par as he finished with a career-best 54-hole score of 210. Key to the tournament victory was his play on par four holes. He led in scoring those holes at -2. This is the fourth team victory in the last seven years for Lynn at the Bobcat Invite. This tournament featured seven teams ranked in the top-10.
Krissy Ortiz / Lynn University / Fr. / Guaynabo, Puerto Rico
Ortiz repeats as this week's SSC Women's Golfer of the Week after becoming just the fourth golfer, and first freshman, in Lynn's women's golf history to win consecutive tournaments. Ortiz shot a final round of 70 to finish with a 54-hole score of 220. Her 70 was one of only two rounds under par for the tournament. Ortiz led all players in par 3 (-1) and total pars (38) and was tied for the lead in par 5 scoring (E).
Women's Rowing
Varsity 8 Boat / Florida Tech / Melbourne, Fla.
Florida Tech’s women’s Varsity 8 is this week’s Boat of the Week. Florida Tech’s women's varsity eight comprised of stroke Aurelia Gervasi (Fr., Orlando, Fla.), Taylor Troy (Sr., Brigantine, N.J.), Jordan Ursch (Sr., Carlisle, Mass.), Paige McGroarty (Gr., Braintree, Mass.), Sam Martinez (Sr., Bowie, Md.), Michaela Allen (So., Mays Landing, N.J.), Tania Kilcullen (Sr., Highlands Ranch, Colo.), bow Federica Pala (Fr., Oristano, Italy) and coxswain Hana Ito (Fr., Honolulu, Hawaii) won a gold medal at the Tars Regatta last Saturday. The Panthers won by 21.2 seconds over second place Rollins and 49.4 seconds over third place Embry-Riddle at a time of 7:05.2.
Tennis
Ahmed Triki / Barry University / Jr. / Tunis, Tunisia
Triki for the second time this season is named SSC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after winning all four of his matches last week. Triki defeated NYIT's David Jiang, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and then teamed up with Renato Lombardi at No. 1 doubles and defeated NYIT No. 1 doubles pair 8-6.Triki beat No. 16 Nicolas Uryson of PBA, 1-6, 6-1, 16-14, at No. 1 singles. At the No. 2 doubles, Triki paired up with Nico Dreer and defeated PBA's No. 2 doubles pair, 82. The Buccaneer Junior improved to 9-0 in singles, including 3-0 against nationally-ranked opponents. Triki is ranked No. 4 in the nation in singles, and with Renato Lombardi form the No. 4 doubles pair in the country. Triki and Lombardi improved to 8-0 in pairs play, all at the No. 1 position. Barry is 10-2 overall, 2-0 in SSC play.
Diana Bogolii / Lynn University / Jr. / Kiyv, Ukraine
Bogolii is this week’s SSC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after leading the fifth-ranked Lynn University to a 5-2 win over No. 12 NYIT. Bogolii and Rosalie Willing were 8-1 victors at No. 1 doubles. Then the Kiyv, Ukraine kept it going at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 win over 38th-ranked Melanie Benyadi. On the season, Bogolii is 8-2 in singles and leads the team with a 10-1 doubles mark. Lynn is 10-1 this season.
Men's Lacrosse
Austin Jerhoff / Lynn University / So. / Attack / Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Jerhoff is awarded SSC Offensive Player of the Week following his 11 points this week. Jerhoff helped 20th-ranked Lynn to victories over MIT and Young Harris, scoring four goals in both outings. In a 17-6 victory over MIT, Jerhoff tied for the team-lead with four goals, two assists, and a ground ball. Jerhoff added another four goals to his season total and an assist while picking up four ground balls in the 13-5 win over Young Harris. Jerhoff has accumulated 22 goals and 11 assists on the season as the Fighting Knights have a 7-3 overall record and are 0-1 in SSC play.
Pat Brothers / Lynn University / Gr. / Goalkeeper / Burlington, Mass.
Brothers takes SSC Defensive Player of the Week honors after turning away 21 shots in between in goal to lead the Fighting Knights defensive efforts. Lynn picked up two wins this week, allowing six or less goals in both outings. Brothers made 10 stops through three quarters of play on Wednesday as the Fighting Knights took down MIT, 17-6. The Burlington, Massachusetts native followed it up with 11 saves on Saturday in the team’s 13-5 shutdown over Young Harris. He also collected four ground balls on the week as he improved to 6-3 on the season in goal. The Fighting Knights are 7-3 on the year, 0-1 in SSC play.
Joseph Biondi / Florida Southern College / Fr. / Midfielder / Orange, Conn.
Biondi earns his second SSC Specialist of the Week honor this season after going 30-42 on faceoffs and picking up 12 ground balls in two victories for Florida Southern. Biondi opened the week by going 18-for-22 on faceoffs and picked up eight ground balls in a victoryover Adams State, 13-6. In the Moccasins first SSC match of the season, Biondi went 12-20 on faceoffs and picked up four ground balls as FSC defeated Florida Tech, 12-5. Florida Southern is 8-5 overall and 1-0 in SSC play.
Women's Lacrosse
Ashley Robertson / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Attacker / Ellicot City, MD
Robertson is this week’s SSC Offensive Player of the Week after guiding the Moccasins to victories over No. 14 Queens and Lenoir-Rhyne. The Florida Southern senior scored six goals on seven shots and also recorded two draw controls and two ground balls to help No. 11 Florida Southern improve to 7-3 on the year. Robertson opened the week with a five goal game against No. 14 Queens and was efficient as all five of her shots went for goals. Robertson also picked up two ground balls and had a draw control. The five goals tied a season and career high for Robertson. In the win over Lenoir-Rhyne (17-6), the Ellicot City, Maryland native scored a goal on two shots and had one draw control. Florida Southern is 7-3 overall.
Gabby Barowski / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Defender / Alexandria, Va.
Barowski earns SSC Defensive Player of the Week after limiting opponents to just 12 goals across two games. Barowski caused three turnovers, picked up seven ground balls and helped anchor a Moccasin defense that allowed just six goals in each game and a defense that caused 14 overall turnovers. At No. 14 Queens, Barowski recorded two ground balls and held Queen's leading goal scorer Abigail Paulus without a goal in the 14-6 victory. The Alexandria, Virginia native had three caused turnovers and six ground balls in the 17-6 win at Lenoir-Rhyne. Florida Southern is 7-3 overall.
