Barry makes a move on Day 2

DADE CITY, Fla. - Round two of the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Championship is in the books and Barry University has pulled in front. The final round of this year’s championship starts 10:30 AM on Lake Jovita Golf and Country North Course.

Men's Round 1 Recap

 

Niclas Weiland, the 2016 SSC Freshman of the Year, has risen to the top of the leaderboard at 5-under, and along with teammate Daniel Faccini have pulled the Barry Buccaneers into first place in the team competition. Weiland’s day two 4-under, 68 has given him a two-stroke lead on Faccini and the rest of the field. Day 1 leader and 2018 champion, Juan Jose Guerra of Nova Southeastern University, sits in a five-way tie for third place at 1-under.

Barry will take a seven-stroke advantage into the final round on Tuesday. Consistency has been key for the Buccaneers who finished 4-under on Sunday and 5-under on Monday. Lynn University jumped up one spot following an 8-under performance in round two. Barry and Lynn both have two golfers within the Top-5 following two rounds of play.  Nova Southeastern holds third place despite a 14-over performance in day two.

Men's Tournament Notes

 

Lynn’s Day 2 8-under ties for the 11th best team round in SSC tournament history and ties for second at Lake Jovita. Barry’s 11-under on April, 14th 2014 stands as the top at Lake Jovita and 10th best all-time.

 

The par five sixth hole continued to give golfers the best scoring opportunities, today it played -0.62 under par. Conversely, golfers found the par four 11th as the most difficult (+0.73).

 

Barry’s Jorge Villar and PBA’s Martin Westerlund made the largest moves up the leaderboard today. Both athletes shot 5-under to move up 30 spots.

 

Nova Southeastern's Juan Jose Guerra will be looking to win back-to-back SSC championships for the first time since 2008 and 2009 winner Greg O'Mahony [NSU]

 

The last time the SSC Championship was played at Lake Jovita, Barry's Adam Svensson won the event shooting a seven-under (209) for the week.

 

Florida Tech won the 2018 team championship with a 19-under, 833. It was the first SSC title for the Panthers.

 

Florida Southern (16) has won the most SSC men's titles, followed by Rollins (5) and Nova Southeastern (5)
