Fifteen SSC Baseball Players Selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft
NEW YORK - Following three days and 40 rounds of the 2017 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, 15 student-athletes were selected from five Sunshine State Conference programs.
Garrett Cave (Pitcher, University of Tampa) went the highest of the 73 Division II baseballers drafted in 2017. He was selected in the fourth round by the San Francisco Giants, 126th overall. Cave joins Austin Allen of Florida Tech (117th by San Diego in 2015) and Daniel Tillman of Florida Southern College (81st by Los Angeles Angels in 2010) as SSC ball players that went in the fourth round or higher over the last decade.
The Sunshine State Conference, for the second time in the last three years, led Division II conferences with 15 draft picks. The CCAA had the second most players chosen with nine. All south region picks came from the SSC.
Tampa boasts the most selections in Division II at seven. Nova Southeastern University and Florida Southern both had three players selected, while Lynn University and Rollins College each had one player chosen.
The 15 selections in 2017 bring the SSC's total to 127 draft picks across last 10 years. During the last decade, the 2010 draft yielded the most picks for SSC programs at 17. Along with Cave, Jake Walsh (Pitcher, Florida Southern College), Chris Corbett (Catcher, Rollins College), and Kevin Santa (Shortstop, Tampa) were selected within the first 20 rounds.
