Eight SSC Baseball Players Selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft
NEW YORK - Following three days and 40 rounds of the 2016 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, eight student-athletes were selected from six Sunshine State Conference programs.
Sam Machonis (Outfielder, Florida Southern College) went the highest of all SSC baseballers in 2016. He was selected in the 10th round by the Detroit Tigers, 295th overall.
Along with Machonis, Alex Degoti (Shortstop, Barry University) and Danny Zardon (Third Base, Nova Southeastern University) were selected within the first 20 rounds.
Nova Southeastern, the 2016 NCAA Division II National Championships, led the way with three players selected. Barry, Eckerd College, Florida Southern, Saint Leo University, and University of Tampa all had one player chosen.
The eight selections in 2016 bring the SSC's total to 104 draft picks across last 10 years. During the last decade, the 2010 draft yeilded the most picks for SSC programs at 17.
