Sunshine State Conference Pioneer Norm Kaye Passes at 94
ORLANDO, Fla. – Norm Kaye, a founder of the Sunshine State Conference and a cornerstone of Saint Leo University athletics, has passed away.
Kaye arrived at Saint Leo College in 1966 and served in numerous leadership roles over more than three decades, including Athletic Director, Chairman of the Physical Education Department, Dean of Students, Director of Financial Aid, and head coach for men's basketball and baseball. He remains the Lions' all-time leader in men's basketball coaching wins and was inducted into the Saint Leo Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.
In 1975, Kaye spearheaded the creation of the Sunshine State Conference to provide its members with a pathway to NCAA postseason competition. He served as the league's first commissioner from March 1975 to April 1976 and later as executive director from 1981 to 1986, guiding SSC expansion, adding women's sports, and establishing a model that developed the league into an athletic and academic national powerhouse.
"On behalf of the Sunshine State Conference, we offer our deepest condolences to Commissioner Kaye's family," stated Commissioner Chris Graham. "As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we honor Norm's vision and leadership in shaping the SSC's championship tradition from its founding in 1975. His legacy is forever synonymous with the excellence of our conference."
A member of the inaugural SSC Hall of Fame Class, Kaye's impact extended beyond the conference office, overseeing the growth of Saint Leo's athletic programs and facilities, founding its intramural program, and developing a teacher preparation track in physical education.
Following his retirement in the early 1990s, Kaye remained active in athletics, mentoring young athletes and supporting his family's pursuits in collegiate sports. His contributions to Saint Leo, the Sunshine State Conference, and NCAA Division II competition leave a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
