Weekly Honors in Baseball, Softball, Lacrosse, Tennis, Outdoor Track, and Rowing

SSC Athletes of the Week | April 7 - 13, 2025

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 7 - 13, 2025. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Baseball Player of the Week

Cole Fowler, Lynn
Senior - Third Base - Mantua, New Jersey - 2nd SSC Weekly Award

Fowler led Lynn to a series sweep at Embry-Riddle following a .714 batting average, a .750 on-base percentage, and a 1.286 slugging percentage. The Mantua, New Jersey native went 10-for-14 with seven runs scored, seven runs batted in, two home runs, two doubles, a walk, and an HBP. Fowler tallied at least two hits and a run scored in all three games. Defensively, the third baseman tallied four putouts and eight assists in 12 chances while helping turn one double play. The weekly award is his second of the season.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Federico Zapata, Nova Southeastern
Junior - Miami, Florida

Zapata tossed a complete game shutout in game three of Nova Southeastern's series win over Saint Leo. The senior from Miami completed nine innings on the mound in 101 pitches, holding the Lions to a .167 batting average. Zapata allowed five hits and a walk, while striking out seven of the 31 batters he faced in the 9-1 Sharks victory.
 

Softball Player of the Week

Hannah Taylor, Eckerd
Sophomore - Catcher - Brooksville, Florida - 2nd SSC Weekly Award

Taylor compiled a .471 batting average, a .526 on-base percentage, and a 1.000 slugging percentage during Eckerd's 3-2 week. The Brooksville, Florida product began the week 3-for-9 with four RBI, two home runs, and two runs scored in the Tritons' two-game sweep of Edward Waters. She then went 5-for-8 with six RBI, a home run, and a run scored at Florida Tech. Taylor's top performance of the week was a 3-for-4 effort with five RBI during a 12-1 win over Florida Tech. Defensively, the catcher had 20 putouts and four assists in 25 chances. The weekly award is her second this season.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Shelby Morse, Embry-Riddle
Junior - Napa, California

Morse tossed 19 innings for Embry-Riddle across three games with a 0.158 WHIP. The Napa, California product began the week with a complete game one-hit shutout at Valdosta State. Morse walked, hit, and struck out one in the 3-0 ERAU win. Morse then earned the win in game one against Lynn. She gave the Eagles five innings, allowed no hits or walks, and struck out four in a 5-1 ERAU victory. Lastly, the junior recorded her second complete-game one-hitter of the week in the final game against Lynn. Morse issued no walks and struck out three hitters in the 4-0 ERAU result. For the week, Morse held opposing hitters to a .034 batting average.
 


Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Jack Johnstone, Rollins
Senior - Attack - Newnan, Georgia - 4th SSC Weekly Award

Johnstone piloted Rollins offensively to conference wins against No. 15 Saint Leo (15-9) and at Florida Tech (10-9). The Newnan, Georgia native began the week all over the stat sheet in the win against Saint Leo. Johnstone tallied a goal, two assists, a ground ball, and a caused turnover against the Lions. The senior followed with game-high totals in goals (5) and points (6) versus Florida Tech, along with three ground balls. Johnstone scored his six goals off 12 shots, six of which were on goal. The weekly award is the fourth of his career.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
 

Matthew Canedo, Lynn
Senior - Defense - Eldersburg, Maryland

Canedo was instrumental in Lynn's victory at Florida Tech (9-7) and against Florida Southern (13-10) last week. The senior from Eldersburg, Maryland began the week with four ground balls and two caused turnovers at Florida Tech. Canedo followed with seven caused turnovers and two ground balls against FSC.


Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

Michael Flores, Tampa
Graduate Student - FOS - Apopka, Florida - 13th SSC Weekly Award

Flores was 22-for-31 in faceoffs during Tampa's conference wins against Palm Beach Atlantic (21-7) and Embry-Riddle (13-4). The grad student from Apopka, Florida began the week 10-for-13 against PBA with a pair of ground balls and a goal. He followed with a 12-for-18 faceoff performance and six ground balls against ERAU. The weekly award is the 13th of his career, placing him alone in third all-time for SSC men's lacrosse.
 


Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Giana Murphy, Florida Southern
Senior - Attack - Manorville, New York - 3rd SSC Weekly Award

Murphy was the leading scorer in Florida Southern's wins over No. 4 Embry-Riddle (13-8) and No. 14 Rollins (22-5). The Manorville, New York native totaled seven goals, an assist, and a draw control against ERAU. She followed with four goals, an assist, and a ground ball against Rollins. Her 11 goals came off 14 shots, 13 of which were on goal. Additionally, Murphy was 7-for-7 on free position shots last week. The weekly award is the third of her career.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Maria Reeves, Florida Southern
Senior - Midfield - Everett, Washington - 3rd SSC Weekly Award

Reeves repeats as Defensive Player of the Week after tallying 29 draw controls across wins over No. 4 Embry-Riddle (13-8) and No. 14 Rollins (22-5). The midfielder from Everett, Washington, opened the week with a game-high nine draw controls against ERAU. She followed with 20 draw controls, the second most in SSC single-game history, as the Moccasins bested Rollins. The weekly award is her third this season.
 


Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Sam Frizelle, Florida Southern
Junior - Lutz, Florida

Frizelle recorded a 4-1 record across singles and doubles last week. Against No. 15 Rollins, the Lutz, Florida product won 6-3, 6-3 at #1 singles, delivering a 4-3 team win, the program's first victory over Rollins in 10 matches, and the first winning SSC record since 2010. Frizelle also went unfinished in split sets against No. 2 Valdosta State's No. 4 ITA-ranked player and fell to the No. 7 nationally ranked player of top-ranked West Florida, both at #1 singles. In doubles, Frizelle paired with Matthew Hewitt for three wins at the #3 court.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Viktoriia Dema, Barry
Junior - Kyiv, Ukraine

Dema led Barry to a 6-1 win over #1 Nova Southeastern last week. The Ukrainian teamed with Maria Tatarnikova and defeated NSU's #2 tandem, 6-4, to secure the doubles point. Dema then rallied down 4-2 to win 7-6(7), 6-0 at #2 singles.

Men's Outdoor Distance Runner of the Week

Gabe McConville, Tampa
Senior - Waynesburg, Pennsylvania - 2nd SSC Weekly Award

McConville registered the fastest 800-meter time in the SSC this season following his run at the South Florida Invitational. The senior from Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, outpaced a field of 29 runners in the event, finishing with an NCAA provisional time and new school record of 1:49.08. McConville finished fourth overall and was the top NCAA Division II finisher. The weekly award is his second this season.
 

Women's Outdoor Track Sprinter of the Week

Allison Murphy, Tampa
Junior - Naugatuck, Connecticut - 3rd SSC Weekly Award

Murphy repeats as Sprinter of the Week after capturing the Tampa program record and the SSC's top time in the 400 hurdles at the South Florida Invitational. The Naugatuck, Connecticut native, finished third overall and was the top D2 runner in the event with an NCAA D2 provisional time of 1:00.22. The weekly award is her third this season.

Women's Outdoor Distance Runner of the Week

Emma Mussante, Florida Southern
Senior - Middleburg, Florida - 4th SSC Weekly Award

Mussante finished 15th in the 5000 meters at the Lee University Fast Break Athletics Invitational. The senior from Middleburg, Florida, finished the race in 17:10.50, besting the 40+ runners in the field. She was the third fastest non-Division I runner in the event and her time ranks as the second fastest in FSC program history. The weekly award is the fourth of her career.

 

Women's Rowing Boat of the Week

Varsity 8 Embry-Riddle

Embry-Riddle's Varsity 8 boat of Jolee Paulk (cox), Shelby Ernst, Emily Retty, Sarah Kinlocke, Aria Moses, Abby Webb, Lily Burdick, Soleil Edwards, Alexandra Weilert is honored for its performance at the Knecht Cup. The V4 registered a fourth-place finish in the Petite Final 2 with a time of 7:03.29.
