SSC Athletes of the Week | March 24 - 30, 2025

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 24 - 30, 2025. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Baseball Player of the Week

Mikey Scott, Florida Southern
Graduate Student - Outfield - Cutler Bay, Florida

Scott was instrumental in Florida Southern's series win over No. 1 Tampa last week. The Cutler Bay, Florida product went 6-for-13 at the plate for a .462 batting average from the #2 spot in the Moccasins' lineup. The graduate student delivered five runs batted in, scored four times, hit two home runs, and doubled while also stealing three bases in the three-game series. Scott tallied at least one extra base hit, run scored, and RBI in all three contests. He finished the week with a .462 on-base and 1.000 slugging percentages. Defensively, the outfielder recorded nine putouts in nine chances.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Kaelan Racculia, Saint Leo
Senior - Louisville, Kentucky

Racculia tossed 14 innings for Saint Leo, including a complete game shutout of Embry-Riddle. The Louisville, Kentucky native began the week throwing three innings of relief against No. 1 Tampa, allowing four hits, three walks, and an earned run while striking out four. Against ERAU, Racculia earned the win in game two following a successful outing across the eighth and ninth innings, where he allowed no hits, runs, or walks and struck out three in Saint Leo's 7-6 victory. The senior took the bump in game three against ERAU, in which he tossed a complete game, nine-inning shutout of the Eagles. Racculia struck out seven of the 35 batters he faced in the Lions' 8-0 win. He allowed six hits, two walks, and two HBP. For the week, Racculia tallied a 1.29 ERA, 1.142 WHIP, and a .212 batting average against.
 


Softball Player of the Week

Hannah Taylor, Eckerd
Sophomore - Catcher - Brooksville, Florida

Taylor compiled a .692 batting average, a .692 on-base percentage, and a 1.308 slugging percentage during Eckerd's series sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic. The Brooksville, Florida product was 9-for-13 at the plate with eight runs batted in, four runs scored, two home runs, and two doubles. Taylor's top performance of the week came in game two, where she was 4-for-4 with two home runs, six RBI, and two runs scored. She tallied multiple hits and scored at least one run in all three games. Defensively, the catcher had 21 putouts and two assists in 24 chances.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Samantha Rosenberger, Barry
Sophomore - Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania

Rosenberger recorded a 0.00 ERA in 13 innings of work during Barry's series sweep at Lynn. The Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania product earned the start in game one, piloting Barry to a 4-3 win following six innings of work where she allowed eight hits and two runs (unearned) while striking out five. Rosenberger then tossed a complete-game shutout in Barry's 5-0 game-three win. The sophomore allowed six hits and no walks while striking out six. Along with her 0.00 ERA, Rosenberger tallied a 1.077 WHIP and 5.9 K's per seven innings.
 


Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Nate Paulo, Rollins
Sophomore - Attack - Parker, Colorado

Paulo scored a game-high five goals in a 16-11 loss to No. 1 Tampa. The sophomore from Parker, Colorado, scored his five goals, including three unassisted, off eight total shots and six shots on goal. Paulo is the only player to score more than four goals against the top-ranked Spartans this season.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
 

Michael Simone, Florida Southern
Graduate Student - Goalie - Smithtown, New York - 3rd SSC Weekly Award

Simone was the catalyst in Florida Southern's 16-11 road win at Palm Beach Atlantic. The Smithtown, New York native tallied 13 saves while allowing 11 goals and facing 48 total shots. Simone also picked up a pair of ground balls in Florida Southern's first SSC victory this season.


Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

Jacob Czyz, Florida Southern
Junior - FOS - Baldwinsville, New York - 7th SSC Weekly Award

Czyz grabs his third Specialist of the Week this season for his performance in a 16-11 road win at Palm Beach Atlantic. The junior from Baldwinsville, New York, won a game-high 13-of-18 face-offs for a .722 win percentage. He also scored a goal and picked up a game-high eight ground balls. This week's accolade is the seventh of his career.
 


Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Caitlin Gavin, Embry-Riddle
Sophomore - Midfield - Marietta, Georgia - 3rd SSC Weekly Award

Gavin led Embry-Riddle to a double overtime win at No. 13 Rollins (15-14) and an overtime win against No. 1 Tampa (15-14). The sophomore from Marietta, Georgia, scored once while causing a turnover and picking up two ground balls in the road win at Rollins. She followed with a game-high five goals, including the game-winner, in the upset of top-ranked Tampa. Gavin also gave the Eagles a caused turnover and draw control in the victory. Gavin is the only player to score more than four goals against the Spartans this season. Her six goals came off 11 shots, eight of which were on goal. This week's accolade is the third of her career.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Kaitlyn Henry, Embry-Riddle
Senior - Defender - Voorhees, New Jersey - 2nd SSC Weekly Award

Henry led Embry-Riddle on the defensive side of a double overtime win at No. 13 Rollins (15-14) and an overtime win against No. 1 Tampa (15-14). The Voorhees, New Jersey product recorded a ground ball in the road victory at Rollins. Against Tampa, she tallied three ground balls and two caused turnovers. The Eagles' captain led a defense that allowed no shots during all three overtime periods last week. This week's accolade is her second this season.
 


Men's Golfer of the Week

Justus Verge, Palm Beach Atlantic
Junior - Bozeman, Montana - 2nd SSC Weekly Award

Verge was victorious at the Cherokee Valley Spring Bash at Cherokee Valley Country Club in Tigerville, South Carolina. The junior from Bozeman, Montana won the tournament by eight strokes, outscoring 58 golfers with a 36-hole score of 5-under, 139 following rounds of 70-69. The junior's final round 69, was the only sub-70 round of the tournament. Verge tallied 12 birdies, an eagle, and 21 pars to lead the Sailfish to an 18 shot team victory. This week's accolade is the second of his career.

Women's Golfer of the Week

Justine Bayle, Tampa
Freshman - Paris, France

Bayle won The Patsy Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury in Salisbury, North Carolina. The Parisian took medalist honors over 37 golfers with a 54-hole score of 7-over, 220 following rounds of 68-73-79. The freshman's opening round 68, was the only sub-70 for the tournament. With the play of Bayle, the Spartans claimed the team title over a field of five teams.
 


Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Alessio Demichelis, Lynn
Senior - Casale Monferrato, Italy

Demichelis topped Palm Beach Atlantic at #1 doubles and #1 singles in Lynn's road victory. The Italian, paired with Davide Cortimiglia, dispatched PBA's top duo 6-4, helping the Fighting Knights to the doubles point. Demichelis then breezed by PBA's top singles player (6-1, 6-1) in leading to the eventual 5-2 Lynn win.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Benedetta Sensi, Embry-Riddle
Sophomore - Rome, Italy

Sensi led the Eagles to road wins over No. 27 Saint Leo (4-3) and No. 1 Nova Southeastern (4-3). After falling at #2 doubles to SLU (6-4), the Italian regrouped to win 6-3, 6-3 at #3 singles. Against #1 NSU, Sensi bounced back from a #2 doubles loss (6-2), to clinch the match for ERAU with a win at #4 singles. The sophomore battled a rain delay to win the match 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 [7-2].
 


Beach Volleyball Pair of the Week

Brooke Hand, Eckerd
Sophomore - Colorado Springs, Colorado

Anna Jupin, Eckerd
Junior - Madison, Alabama

Eckerd's #1 flight of Hand and Jupin went 3-0 at the Tritons' Battle on the Bay. Hand/Jupin picked up a come-from-behind win over Division I Missouri State (18-21, 23-21, 15-12) on the opening day of the event. The #1's delivered Eckerd's only points on day two with wins over SSC foes Tampa (26-24, 21-18) and Palm Beach Atlantic (21-18, 19-21, 15-6).
 


Men's Outdoor Track Sprinter of the Week

K'Anthony Benjamin, Embry-Riddle
Senior - Sandy Point, St. Kitts

Benjamin helped the Eagles run the fastest 4x100 in the SSC this season and ran the conference's second fastest 200 meters at the Terry Long FSU Relays in Tallahassee, Florida. Running second in the 4x100, the Kittitian helped his squad set a new program record, and first sub-41,  with a time of 40.83. Additionally, was the top D2 performer in the 200 meters (11th overall) with a time of 21.78.

Men's Outdoor Distance Runner of the Week

Christian Giller, Florida Southern
Junior - Brandon, Florida

Giller posted the fastest 10,000 meters time in the SSC this season following his performance at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Missouri. The junior from Brandon, Florida was the top Division II finisher (seventh overall) at the event finishing in 29:45.07. Giller's time surpassed the NCAA D2 provisional standard. The weekly award is his fourth this season, with the first three coming during the cross country season.
 

Women's Outdoor Track Sprinter of the Week

Lindsey Kownick, Tampa
Sophomore - Cary, Illinois

Kownick won the 400 hurdles and placed second in the 100 hurdles at the Spartan Relays in Tampa, Florida. The sophomore from Cary, Illinois bested eight runners in the 400 hurdles and delivered the SSC's fifth best time in the event this season, 1:05.88, also a personal best. Kownick finished second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.27, the SSC's sixth best time.

Women's Outdoor Distance Runner of the Week

Campbell Caldwell, Tampa
Junior - Middletown, Maryland

Caldwell posted the fastest 10,000 Meters time in the SSC this season following her performance at the WashU Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Missouri. The junior from Middletown, Maryland was the sixth Division II finisher (14th overall) at the event finishing in 35:25.31. Caldwell's time stands as an NCAA D2 provisional mark.

Women's Rowing Boat of the Week

Varsity 8 Embry-Riddle

Embry-Riddle's Varsity 8 boat of Shelby Ernst, Emily Retty, Sarah Kinlocke, Aria Moses, Abby Webb, Lily Burdick, Soleil Edwards, Alexandra Weilert, and Jolee Paulk (Cox) won at the FIRA Championships. ERAU's V8 bested an eight-boat field by 9.19 seconds with a time of 7:02.07 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida. The crew guided the Eagles to a second consecutive FIRA team title.
