FSC’s Micallef Selected as SSC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year Presented by S3 Design
MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Southern College swimmer Kyle Micallef earns the honor of Sunshine State Conference's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year by S3 Design. The NCAA national champion majored in accounting and tallied a 3.93 undergraduate GPA.
The Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award is voted on by Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Athletic Communication Directors, and Faculty Athletic Representatives from each of the 11 SSC member institutions.
Micallef, a native of Melbourne, Australia, was awarded the 2023-24 College Sports Communicators Academic All-American Team Member of the Year honor. He was also tabbed a First Team Academic All-American in 2022-23 and 2023-24. During his career, Micallef earned three CSCAA scholar All-American laurels, two Academic All-District nods, two D2ADA academic achievement awards, three SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll selections, three FSC President's Scholar listings, and three FSC Dean's Lists accolades.
The senior capped off his career at the 2023-24 NCAA Division II Championship, claiming the 50 Free title in an SSC record time of 19.28. He also owns the SSC meet record in the 50 Free and is a part of FSC's 200 & 400 Medley relay squads that hold the conference overall and meet records. Micallef won four SSC individual titles throughout his career, including three straight 50 Free medals. He is a three-time All-SSC Second Team honoree and a four-time SSC Swimmer of the Week winner. Micallef earned four consecutive NCAA Championship Meet appearances, in which he claimed 22-time All-American awards.
Outside of the pool, Micallef helped the swimming team perform community service at the Talbot House, where he painted, organized materials, and prepared lunches to hand out to those in need. He also participated in the team's yearly support of the Red Ribbon Run at Lake Mirror with kids in Polk County from Kindergarten to fifth grade.
Micallef is the sixth Florida Southern student-athlete to win SSC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year since the award's inception in 1995-96. He joins Shanaka Weerasooriya (1995-96), Ryan Dunne (2002-03), Robbie Swan (2013-14), Diego Gimenez (2015-16), and Matteo Zampese (2022-23) as the Moccasins to win the honor. He is the sixth swimmer to win the award, joining Brett Saunders (Tampa), Thomas Steenberg (Florida Tech), and Gimenez, Swan, and Zampese of Florida Southern.
