SSC Athletes of the Week | April 8 - 14, 2024

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of April 8 - 14, 2024. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Baseball Player of the Week

Anthony Nunez - Tampa
Junior - Third Base - Hialeah, Florida


Nunez is selected as Player of the Week for his performance in a sweep of Florida Tech. The junior from Hialeah, Florida, was 7-for-11 at the plate with three home runs and a double. He scored seven times and drove in seven runs during Tampa's three games against the Panthers last week. Nunez tallied at least two hits, a run scored, and an RBI in all three games. He also added two stolen bases and two walks to his weekly stat sheet. The infielder's top game of the series was the finale, where he went 2-for-4 at the plate with two home runs, four RBI, three runs scored, two stolen bases, and a walk. The junior finished the week with a .636 batting average, a .692 on-base percentage, and a 1.545 slugging percentage. Defensively, Nunez recorded four a putout and nine assists in 10 attempts.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Frank Gonzalez - Barry
Senior - Miramar, Florida


Gonzalez grabs Pitcher of the Week honors for his work on the mound in a 15-0 win against Palm Beach Atlantic. The Miramar, Florida native started game two for the Buccaneers, allowing two hits and no runs in five innings of work. Gonzalez earned the victory by striking out nine and walking three. The weekly award is the third of his career.
 

Softball Player of the Week

Camryn Wineinger - Tampa
Senior - Second Base - Plant City, Florida


Wineinger is awarded Player of the Week for her role in Tampa's three-game sweep at Florida Tech. The senior was 7-for-9 at the plate with eight runs scored, six runs batted in, four walks, three home runs, and a double. The Plant City, Florida product had at least two runs scored and two hits in all three ballgames. For the week, Wineinger produced a .778 batting average, a .846 on-base percentage, and a 1.889 slugging percentage. Defensively, the infielder registered eight putouts and six assists in 15 chances while also turning two double plays.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Ashley Worrell - Rollins
Grad Student - Oviedo, Florida


Worrell collects Pitcher of the Week following 14 innings of scoreless softball against Eckerd, including a no-hitter. The Oviedo, Florida native took the circle in game one of the series, collecting her fifth career no-hitter following nine strikeouts and one walk in seven innings. The graduate student earned the game three start for Rollins and provided her team with a complete game shutout following five strikeouts, two hits, and two walks. With the play of Worrell, Rollins defeated Eckerd 2-0 in both games. Triton hitters combined for a .043 batting average last week and only reached base five times in 14 innings. The weekly award is the seventh of her career.
 

Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Andrew Milani - Tampa
Grad Student - Attack - Catonsville, Maryland


Milani grabs Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2024 after leading Tampa in victories over Saint Leo (16-7) and No. 13 Seton Hill (14-8). At Saint Leo, the Catonsville, Maryland native tallied game highs in points (8) and goals (7). He also scooped six ground balls and caused a turnover. The graduate student followed with five goals in the Top-15 matchup against Seton Hill at a neutral site. His 12 goals last week came on 23 total shots and 20 shots on goal for a .870 shot-on-goal percentage.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Luca Mercaldo - Tampa
Sophomore - Goalkeeper - Baltimore, Maryland


Mercaldo picks up Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2024 following his performance in victories over Saint Leo (16-7) and No. 13 Seton Hill (14-8). The Baltimore native tallied nine saves and seven goals allowed in net at Saint Leo. Mercaldo then tallied 11 saves and nine goals allowed in the neutral site victory against Seton Hill. Mercaldo averaged 8.14 goals against for the week, with a .556 save percentage, while facing 61 total shots.

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

Camren Santos - Lynn
Junior - FOS - Woodbine, Maryland


Santos is the Specialist of the Week for his 0.694 faceoff percentage across Lynn's wins against Palm Beach Atlantic (12-10) and Florida Tech (11-9). To start the week, the senior won 17-of-25 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 10 groundballs against PBA. Against Florida Tech, the Woodbine, Maryland native won 17-of-24 faceoffs, tallied a game-high seven groundballs, and added an assist.
 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Sophi Wrisk - Tampa
Junior - Midfield - Baltimore, Maryland


Wrisk takes Offensive Player of the Week honors for her role in Tampa's wins at No. 13 Lynn (10-9) and No. 17 Rollins (17-11). The junior from Baltimore began the week with two goals and a draw control in the overtime victory at Lynn. She followed with a game-high eight points following three goals and a career-high five assists in the win at Rollins. The midfielder also caused a turnover in the win against the Tars.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Alex Walling - Tampa
Grad Student - Goalkeeper - San Diego, California


Walling garners Defensive Player of the Week accolades for her performance in Tampa's wins at No. 13 Lynn (10-9) and No. 17 Rollins (17-11). The San Diego native recorded 11 saves and allowed nine goals in the overtime win at Lynn. Against Rollins, she tallied 15 saves and allowed 11 goals while grabbing a pair of ground balls. Walling faced while facing 58 total shots last week and registered a .565 save percentage and 10.62 goals against average. The weekly award is the third of her career.
 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Chris Fok Kow - Florida Southern
Senior - Balaclava, Mauritius


Fok Kow wins Athlete of the Week honors a third time in 2024 for his efforts against Eckerd and No. 4 Rollins. The Balaclava, Mauritius product began the week with a #1 doubles win (6-4) along with partner Mario Garoz against Eckerd. At #1 singles, Fok Kow won (4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6)). At Rollins, Fok Kow and Garoz defeated the Tars' #1 doubles team (6-3). The senior defeated No. 22 Efe Comu (6-1, 1-6, 6-4) at #1 singles, completing his undefeated week. This week's accolade is the fourth of his career.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Salma Djoubri - Lynn
Sophomore - Caudebec Les Elbeuf, France


Djoubri garners Athlete of the Week for the second time in 2024 as Lynn posted a 4-3 win against No. 1 Nova Southeastern. The Caudebec Les Elbeuf, France native and partner Jade Marie, defeated the nation's No. 1 duo of Natalie Espinal and Freya Davies at #1 doubles (6-4) to open the match. Djoubri (ITA #1) then nearly blanked Espinal (ITA #5) at #1 singles (6-0, 6-1).
 

Women's Rowing Boat of the Week

Embry-Riddle Varsity 4

Embry-Riddle's Varsity 4 claims Boat of the Week following a strong performance at the Knecht Cup on Cooper River in Pennsauken, New Jersey. The boat of Briella Goldenberg, Caterina Hart, Danielle DelGrippo, Alexandria Fife-Winslow, and Laurel Grein (coxswain) finished the 2000-kilometer race in 8:08.88. The Eagles placed second, ahead of No. 3 Seattle Pacific, No. 8 Barry, and No. 6 Mercyhurst. ERAU lost a tight last-second battle by 1.68 seconds to No. 1 Central Oklahoma.
