SSC Athletes of the Week | March 11 - 17, 2024

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 11 - 17, 2024. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Baseball Player of the Week

Cam Collier - Eckerd
Senior - Outfield - St. Petersburg, Florida


Collier earns Player of the Week honors with four home runs in a three-game series at Barry. For the week, the senior was 6-for-14 at the plate across four games, with six runs batted in, five runs scored, five extra-base hits, three walks, and only one strikeout. The St. Petersburg, Florida native's top game of the week was the second against Barry, where he went 2-for-4 with two home runs. Collier recorded an extra-base hit, RBI, and run scored in all four games and finished the week with a .429 batting average, a .529 on-base percentage, and a 1.357 slugging percentage. Defensively, the outfielder had three putouts in four chances.


Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Joe Morrissey - Barry
Sophomore - Moorestown, New Jersey


Morrissey is named Pitcher of the Week for his victory against Eckerd last week. The Moorestown, New Jersey hurler started the game for the Buccaneers, tossing eight innings where he allowed two hits, one run (earned), and no walks. The sophomore struck out four batters and held opposing hitters to a .080 average. Morrissey's performance on the bump led to the quickest nine-inning ballgame in Barry's history (1:48). He pounded the zone for 71 strikes on 98 total pitches as the Buccaneers secured the 4-1 win.
 


Softball Player of the Week

Lexie Chevalier - Tampa
Senior - Catcher - Valrico, Florida


Chevalier picks up Player of the Week honors following a 7-for-11 effort at the plate from the seven spot in Tampa's three-game sweep of Embry-Riddle and win against Post. For the week, the senior tallied a .636 batting average, a .636 on-base percentage, and a 1.000 slugging percentage. She opened up the week with a 2-for-3 performance against Post with a double and run scored. Against ERAU, Chevalier was 5-for-8 with a run scored, RBI, and two extra-base hits. Defensively, the catcher had 24 putouts and four assists in 28 chances. Additionally, she caught 4-of-5 runners attempting to steal a base. This week's accolade is the second of her career.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Gwen McGinnis - Tampa
Sophomore - Tallahassee, Florida


McGinnis wins Pitcher of the Week following a 0.00 ERA after tossing 14 innings for Tampa last week, including a no-hitter. The Tallahassee, Florida native took the circle against Post, where she tossed a seven-inning no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and just one walk allowed. McGinnis then threw a seven-inning complete game against Embry-Riddle, allowing four hits, one run (unearned), and no walks. She tallied five punchouts in the 2-1 Spartan victory. McGinnis held opponents to a .091 batting average last week as she collects the second weekly award of her career.
 

Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Andrew Milani - Tampa
Grad Student - Attack - Catonsville, Maryland


Milani grabs Offensive Player of the Week after leading Tampa in victories over Westminster (17-10) and No. 16 Colorado Mesa (17-12). The Catonsville, Maryland native tallied game highs in points (8), goals (5), and assists (3) during the win over Westminster. He followed with four points in the Top-20 matchup against CMU, after a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Milani also picked up four ground balls in UT's ranked win. His seven goals last week came on 17 total shots and 13 shots on goal.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Matthew Beddow - Tampa
Grad Student - LSM/Defender - San Diego, California


Beddow collects Defensive Player of the Week for his part in Tampa's victories over Westminster (17-10) and No. 16 Colorado Mesa (17-12). The San Diego native totaled seven caused turnovers, including a game-high of five against CMU, along with four groundballs last week. Beddow also scored a goal, unassisted, in the victory against CMU. With the play of Beddow, UT kept Westminster and CMU to six and three goals below their season-scoring averages, respectively. This week's accolade is the fourth of his career.


Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

Jacob Czyz - Florida Southern
Sophomore - FOS - Baldwinsville, New York


Czyz is named Specialist of the Week for the second time in 2024 with his performance in Florida Southern's win at No. 20 Lander (15-10). The sophomore from Baldwinsville, New York, won a game-high 25-of-28 face-offs for a .893 win percentage in the victory. Czyz also had an assist on the first goal of the game and picked up a career-high 15 ground balls. This week's accolade is the fourth of his career.
 


Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Kristyn Johnson - Lynn
Junior - Attack - Rochester, New York


Johnson collects Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2024, following 15 total goals in Lynn's wins over North Greenville (26-2) and Alabama-Huntsville (20-2). Against UNG, Johnson totaled nine points with eight goals and an assist. She followed with nine points against UAH, with seven scores and a pair of assists. The Rochester, New York product scored her 15 goals last week on 18 shots and 15 shots on goal for a .833 shot-on-goal percentage. This week's accolade is the third of her career.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Caitlin Gavin - Embry-Riddle
Freshman - Defender - Marietta, Georgia


Gavin earns Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2024, with her play in Embry-Riddle's wins at Shorter (21-1) and against No. 18 Saint Anselm (16-6). The freshman from Marietta, Georgia, tallied three draw controls, two caused turnovers, two groundballs, a goal, and an assist in the win at Shorter. She followed with a game-high seven caused turnovers against a nationally ranked Saint Anselm squad. She also had three groundballs, two goals, and an assist in the win. Gavin's seven caused turnovers against Saint Anselm places her in a tie for the second-most in SSC single-game history.
 

Men's Golfer of the Week

Mike Hay - Nova Southeastern
Grad Student - Middlesbrough, England


Hay takes Golfer of the Week for the second time in 2024 for his performance at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate Challenge at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta, Georgia. The Englishman tied for first at 7-under (209) following the 54-hole event but fell in a two-person playoff. Hay opened stroke play with a 3-under round (69) but added three strokes in round two (72) and shot four-under in round three (68). With Hay's play, NSU took the title in a field of 17 teams.


Women's Golfer of the Week

Nina Klug - Barry
Junior - Dormagen, Germany


Klug is awarded Golfer of the Week laurels following her win at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational at Orange Tree Golf Club in Orlando. The German carded a 2-over 218 to claim the title over a field that included five ranked squads. Klug scored 72-74-72 across the three rounds to win the tournament by five strokes. With Klug's play, Barry finished second of 10 teams.

 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Chris Fok Kow - Florida Southern
Senior - Balaclava, Mauritius


Fok Kow takes Athlete of the Week honors for his role in Florida Southern's 4-0 week, which included wins over No. 1 Indianapolis and No. 4 Mississippi College. The Balaclava, Mauritius native went undefeated in singles with wins over #2 players from MC (6-4, 7-6 [7-3]) and Indianapolis (6-4, 6-1). Fok Kow was up (6-1, 3-6, 4-1) against No. 28 Auburn-Montgomery as the match went final. He also defeated the #1 player from Puerto Rico Rio-Piedras (6-3, 6-3). In doubles, Fok Kow and Garoz took down MC (6-3), AUM (6-1), and UPR Rio-Piedras (6-1) at the #1 position. The duo also led UIndy (5-3) as the doubles play concluded. This week's accolade is the second of his career.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Luzia Obermeier - Saint Leo
Junior - Bavaria, Germany


Obermeier garners Athlete of the Week by leading Saint Leo to victories over No. 9 Indianapolis and No. 38 Mississippi College. The German went 3-0 at #1 singles for the Lions last week, beginning with a come-from-behind win against No. 14 Auburn-Montgomery's No. 22 Estefania Garcia (4-6, 7-6, 6-3). Obermeier then defeated MC's #1 (6-3, 7-5) and UIndy's No. 10 Tyffaine Pais (6-1, 1-6, 6-3). Her lone blip of last week came at a #1 doubles loss to AUM (6-3), but she bounced back with partner Lavinia Lancellotti by taking down MC (6-1) and UIndy (7-6 [7-5]).

 

Women's Rowing Boat of the Week

Embry-Riddle Varsity 4

Embry-Riddle's Varsity 4 boat, which includes Shelby Ernst, Sofia Lorenzini, Soleil Edwards, Alexandra Weilert, and Jadyn Harjung (coxswain), wins Boat of the Week accolades. The Eagles V4 defeated Division I opponents Jacksonville and Drake in the afternoon session at Lake Beresford in Deland, Florida. ERAU finished a wake-filled race with variable winds in 7:53.9, besting second-place Jacksonville by over 10 seconds across the 2000-meter course.
