SSC Athletes of the Week | September 25 - October 1, 2023

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of September 25 - October 1, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week

Mackenzie Petermann - Florida Southern
Senior - Outside Hitter - Richmond Hill, Georgia


Petermann receives Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts against three SSC opponents last week. In a four-set loss against Eckerd, she had a game-high 17 kills along with nine digs, three blocks, and three assists. The Richmond Hill, Georgia native followed with 14 kills while hitting .429 in the sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic. Petermann then tallied a career-high 27 kills while achieving the 21st double-double of her career with 10 digs in a four-set win against Nova Southeastern. The senior averaged 5.27 kills, 2.36 digs, 0.64 blocks, and 5.77 points per set for the week while hitting .317. The weekly award is the third of her career.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

JJ Ramirez - Tampa
Junior - Libero/Defensive Specialist - Fleming Island, Florida


Ramirez earns a second Defensive Player of the Week accolade in 2023 for her role in Tampa's 3-0 week. The Fleming Island, Florida native began the week with a match-high 24 digs in a 3-2 win over Saint Leo. She followed with a match-high 19 digs in a sweep of Nova Southeastern and eight digs in a sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic. For the week, Ramirez averaged 5.1 digs and totaled five aces and four assists.

Volleyball Setter of the Week

Natalie Horsley - Rollins
Junior - Bluffdale, Utah


Horsley claims Setter of the Week for the second time in 2023 by averaging 14.29 assists in a pair of Rollins wins. The setter from Bluffdale, Utah, opened the week with 50 assists in a sweep of Lynn. In the victory, she added three digs and two blocks to her stat sheet. Her performance against Lynn is tied for ninth most assists in a three-set match in conference history. Horsley went on to post another 50 assists, this time in a 3-1 win against Barry. She recorded eight digs, three blocks, and an ace in the win. For the week, Horsley gave Rollins 100 assists, 11 digs, and five blocks while leading the Tars to a .279 hitting percentage.
 


Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Patrick O'Halloran - Lynn
Senior - Midfielder - Taunton, England


O'Halloran repeats as Offensive Player of the Week with three points against No. 3 Florida Tech. The midfielder from Taunton, England, assisted on Roman Hartleb's game-winning goal in the 64th minute to give the Fighting Knights a 1-0 lead. O'Halloran then scored, unassisted, in the 75th minute to secure a 2-0 upset win for Lynn.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

Iker Berruezo - Barry
Senior - Defender - Garinoain, Spain


Berruezo is named Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Barry's shutouts of Nova Southeastern and Tampa. The Spaniard played all 180 minutes on the pitch, leading a Buccaneer back line that allowed just three shots on goal across the two matches. With the play of Berruezo, Barry defeated Nova Southeastern, 3-0, at home and bested Tampa, 5-0, on the road.
 


Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Tabea Schutt - Nova Southeastern
Grad. Student - Forward - Hamburg, Germany


Schutt collects Offensive Player of the Week following a hat-trick against Florida Southern. The German lifted NSU to a 3-0 victory over FSC following goals in the 6th, 32nd, and 73rd minutes. Schutt scored her three goals with three shots on goal and four total shots in just 57 minutes on the pitch. Earlier in the week, Schutt tallied two shots on goal in a 1-0 Sharks win against Barry.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

Stefane Rosa - Nova Southeastern
Senior - Goalkeeper - Rio De Janeiro, Brazil


Rosa receives Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2023 after earning a pair of shutouts for Nova Southeastern. The Brazilian picked up the clean sheet following six saves in a 1-0 win against Barry. She then added four saves in NSU's 3-0 win against Florida Southern. After facing 14 shots and allowing zero goals, Rosa lowered her goals-against average to 0.38 through eight games. The weekly award is the fifth of her career.
 


Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week

Tanner Rosolino - Embry-Riddle
Senior - Port Orange, Florida


Rosolino gathers Runner of the Week honors for the second time in 2023 for his performance at the Florida State XC Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. The Port Orange, Florida product finished second of 353 runners and was the top NCAA Division II performer at the invite. Rosolino completed the 8000-meter race in 24:46.7, nearly 10 seconds faster than the next D2 finisher. With Rosolino's performance, Embry-Riddle finished second of 31 teams, besting 10 Division I programs.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week


Aspen Gordon - Tampa
Senior - Morton, Illinois


Gordon takes Runner of the Week for the second time in 2023 for her performance at the Florida State XC Invitational at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. The Morton, Illinois native finished 10th of 341 runners and was the top NCAA Division II performer at the invite. Gordon completed the 5000-meter race in 17:50.1, seven seconds faster than the next D2 finisher. With Gordon's performance, Tampa finished fourth of 35 teams, besting nine Division I programs.
 


Men's Golfer of the Week

Trey Tesiero - Palm Beach Atlantic
Junior - St. John's, Florida


Tesiero grabs Golfer of the Week after winning Flagler's Jay Jennison Cup at the Slammer & Squire Golf Course in St. Augustine, Florida. The junior from St. John's, Florida, claimed the title with a one-hole playoff victory over Montevallo's Eric Boutwell. He carded a 10-under, 206, over the 54-hole event. He opened with the tournament's lowest round (65), then tallied a 71 and 70 over the next two rounds. With the play of Tesiero, Palm Beach Atlantic won the team title at 23-under (841).


Women's Golfer of the Week

Sandra Eriksson - Eckerd
Junior - Halmstad, Sweden


Eriksson captures Golfer of the Week following her win at the Invite at Innisbrook. The Swede shot a 1-over, 214, to best a field of 79 golfers on the South Course at Innisbrook Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Florida. Eriksson's second-round 67 was the low round score of the tournament and helped vault her to a two-stroke victory. With the play of Eriksson, Eckerd won the team event over a field of 15 teams.
 


Men's Swimmer of the Week

Luke Altmann - Florida Tech
Senior - Cape Town, South Africa


Altmann is selected Swimmer of the Week after leading Florida Tech to an 86-84 dual meet win against Rollins. The senior from South Africa recorded victories in the 50 Free (21.04) and 100 Free (45.30) in his first meet as a Panther. Altmann's time in the 100 free was two and a half seconds ahead of the closest competition and just .02 shy of an NCAA "B" Standard. He was also part of the men's 200 medley relay, which finished at 1:31.90.


Women's Swimmer of the Week

Torie Whitbeck - Florida Tech
Freshman - Oklahoma City, Oklahoma


Whitbeck garners Swimmer of the Week following her performance in Florida Tech's 90-79 dual meet win against Rollins. The Oklahoma City, Oklahoma product finished first in the 100 Back (1:00.03) and 200 Back (2:09.28) in her collegiate debut. In relay action, Whitbeck, Dressel, Ramirez, and Malarz took top honors in the 200 Medley with a time of 1:50.34.
