SSC Athletes of the Week | September 11 - 17, 2023
Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of September 11-17, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.
Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Jaden McBride - Embry-Riddle
Junior - Outside Hitter - St. Johns, Florida
McBride repeats as Offensive Player of the Week as Embry-Riddle opened SSC play with two wins. In a 3-2 win at Rollins, McBride registered team-high marks in kills (17), digs (17), blocks (3), and points (20.0). In five sets against Florida Tech, McBride tallied a match-high and career-high 26 kills. She also gave the Eagles 17 digs and three blocks in the win. The junior averaged 4.3 kills and 3.4 digs per set on her way to a third career weekly award.
Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
JJ Ramirez - Tampa
Junior - Libero/Defensive Specialist - Fleming Island, Florida
Ramirez is selected as the Defensive Player of the Week for her play in Tampa's SSC-opening victories at Eckerd and Florida Southern. The Fleming Island, Florida, product opened the week with a game-high 18 digs and three assists in a sweep against Eckerd. She followed with a match-high 19 digs and six assists in a 3-0 win at Florida Southern. For the week, Ramirez averaged 6.17 digs and 1.50 assists per set.
Volleyball Setter of the Week
Emily Edwards - Lynn
Grad Student - College Station, Texas
Edwards repeats as Setter of the Week by averaging 10.63 assists as Lynn opened conference play with a pair of wins. The College Station, Texas native totaled a match-high 49 assists with just one error in a five-set win at Nova Southeastern. Edwards then registered a match-high 36 assists, with no errors, in a sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic. The graduate student also provided the Fighting Knights with 19 digs, five blocks, five kills, and four aces while leading her team to a .243 hitting percentage last week. The weekly award is the seventh of her career.
Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Jorge Lameiras - Rollins
Junior - Forward - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Lameiras collects Offensive Player of the Week with five points against two SSC opponents last week. In non-conference action against No. 3 Florida Tech, the Brazilian assisted on Nazar Tsaruk's game-opening goal in the 21st minute. Lameiras then found the back of the net in the 28th minute of a Jari Polm assist, helping secure a 3-3 tie with the highly-ranked Panthers. The junior followed with a goal in the Tars' SSC opener against Tampa. He scored, unassisted, in the 83rd minute as the Tars and Spartans finished in a 2-2 draw. Lameiras averaged 80 minutes, 3.5 shots, and 1.5 shots on goal per game.
Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Aidan Leak - Eckerd
Junior - Goalkeeper - Cape Town, South Africa
Leak picks up his second Defensive Player of the Week honor of 2023 with a clean sheet against Embry-Riddle. The South African helped the Tritons to a 4-0 win over ERAU following five saves while facing eight total shots. Through five matches this season, Leak sports a 0.80 goals-against average.
Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week
Ryland McGratty - Rollins
Junior - Forward - Winter Park, Florida
McGratty grabs Offensive Player of the Week following her performance in Rollins' neutral site win over Columbus State. The Winter Park, Florida native scored the game's first goal in the 22nd minute unassisted. McGratty followed with another score in the 64th minute off a ball from Valeria Acevedo. With the play of McGratty, the Tars bested a CSU squad receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll, 3-2.
Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week
Stefane Rosa - Nova Southeastern
Senior - Goalkeeper - Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
Rosa receives Defensive Player of the Week honors after earning a shutout in Nova Southeastern's conference opener. The Brazilian picked up the clean sheet following five saves in a 1-0 win against Florida Tech. The performance lowers Rosa's goals-against average to 0.60 through five games.
Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Tanner Rosolino - Embry-Riddle
Senior - Port Orange, Florida
Rosolino receives Runner of the Week honors for his performance at the UF Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Florida. The Port Orange, Florida product finished 12th of 205 runners and was the top NCAA Division II performer at the invite. Rosolino completed the 7800-meter race in 24:37.7, over seven seconds faster than the next D2 finisher. With Rosolino's performance, Embry-Riddle finished fifth of 15 teams, besting eight Division I programs.
Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week
Aspen Gordon - Tampa
Senior - Morton, Illinois
Gordon secures Runner of the Week laurels with her performance at the Southern Stampede hosted by Missouri Southern in Joplin, Missouri. Gordon earned a fourth-place finish out of 197 runners in the 5000-meter race. The Morton, Illinois native recorded a time of 17:48.0 at the event, averaging a 5:34.7 mile. Her efforts led Tampa to a second-place finish out of 20 teams, just two points back of No. 19 Pittsburg State.
Men's Golfer of the Week
Adam Alvarez - Florida Southern
Senior - Winter Haven, Florida
Alvarez is awarded Golfer of the Week after winning the NCAA Division II National Championship Preview on Crooked Cat at the Orange County National Golf Center in Winter Garden, Florida. The Winter Haven, Florida native captured his second career win with a 10-under, 206. Alvarez led the 52-person tournament wire-to-wire following rounds of 68, 69, and 69 to win the event by five strokes. He made 33 pars, 14 birdies, and had one eagle over the 54-hole event. With the play of Alvarez, FSC won the team title by four strokes over nine teams, including four Top-25 teams.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Charlotte Brook - Lynn
Freshman - Poole, England
Brook captures Golfer of the Week following her performance at the UIndy Invitational at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. The Briton tied for third at the tournament by carding a 3-over performance following a score of 73 in all three rounds. With the play of Brook, Lynn finished second of sixteen teams, besting five Top-25 programs.
