2023 SSC Softball All-Conference Awards
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Sunshine State Conference presents the 2023 softball postseason awards. Thirty student-athletes from nine member institutions are recognized as All-Conference. Tampa leads the way with six First Team honorees and the Coach of the Year winner. Voting for the All-SSC softball awards was conducted among the league's head coaches.
SSC Softball All-Conference History: All-SSC Teams | Players & Coaches of the Year
The league office recognizes Ashley Troutman from Rollins as the Player of the Year. The senior from Panama City Beach, Florida, finished the regular season with conference-leading numbers in batting average (.488), hits (90), OPS (1.229), and stolen bases (49). Troutman was also Top-3 in SSC slugging percentage (.707), on-base percentage (.552), runs scored (48), and home runs (7). She becomes the fifth Tar in program history to win Player of the Year1. The Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year award is presented by College Ave Student Loans.
Saint Leo's Kayla Betts is honored as Pitcher of the Year. The Leesburg, Florida, product made 27 appearances in the circle, where she threw 22 complete games, including 15 shutouts. The junior ended the regular season with a 23-4 record, 179.1 innings pitched, 279 strikeouts, a .114 batting average against, a 0.66 ERA, and a .502 WHIP. Betts led the league in strikeouts, innings pitched, opponent batting averages, wins, and saves. She is the second Lion to earn Pitcher of the Year laurels2.
Briana Neal from Saint Leo collects Freshman of the Year accolades. The infielder started all 52 games for the Lions in 2023 and provided her team with 52 hits and a .356 batting average. The Sanford, Florida native scored 39 times, drove in 31 runs, and swiped 17 bases this season. Neal finished Top-10 in SSC on-base percentage, OPS, runs scored, doubles, HBP, and sacrifice flies. She is the seventh Lion to win Freshman of the Year and the first since 20173.
Tampa Leslie Kanter is voted SSC Coach of the Year for the sixth time by her peers. Kanter led the Spartans to a program-record 40-win season, including a 28-2 mark in SSC play. As a result, UT grabbed its sixth overall and second consecutive SSC title. The Kanter-led Spartans have held the NFCA's No. 1 ranking since mid-April and earned the No. 1 seed in the South Region.
Cheyenne Nelson of Florida Tech highlights the repeat All-SSC winners. Nelson, a 2023 First Team selection, earns a third straight First Team honor and fourth overall award. She was also the 2021 SSC Player of the Year. Tampa's Mariah Galhouse also repeats as First Team All-SSC for the third consecutive season, while NSU's Alexis Smith returns to the First Team after a Second Team nod in 2022. Troutman graduates to the First Team in 2023 after Second Team honors in 2021 & 2022. NSU's Ryleigh Langwell is the lone repeat on the All-Defensive team. In total, 11 athletes honored in 2023 repeat as First or Second Team All-SSC award winners.
