Tournament Page] - The Sunshine State Conference women's tennis tournament begins with quarterfinal play on Thursday, April 20th. Florida Southern College will host all tournament matches at IMG Academy in Bradenton.
Barry earns the #1 seed in the postseason tournament after finishing 9-0 in conference play and winning the regular-season SSC title. The Buccaneers are back-back-to-back regular-season champs, capturing seven of the league's nine trophies since they first were handed out in 2014. Barry has won 10 of the last 12 league tournament titles. They are also the reigning NCAA Division II champion five times over.
The Buccaneers draw #8 Rollins (2-7 SSC) in the quarterfinal round. Barry defeated the Tars, 7-0, on February 12th in Winter Park. Nova Southeastern (8-1 SSC) is seeded #2 and will take on #7 Embry-Riddle (4-5 SSC) for the second straight year. The Sharks defeated the Eagles, 4-3, on February 11th in Fort Lauderdale. Lynn (7-2 SSC) gathers the #3 seed and will face off against #6 Tampa (4-5 SSC). The Fighting Knights defeated the Spartans, 6-1, on March 25th in Boca Raton. #4 Saint Leo (6-3 SSC) versus #5 Florida Southern (4-5 SSC) rounds out this year's quarterfinal round. The Lions Knights defeated the Moccasins, 7-0, on March 30th in Lakeland.
All quarterfinal matches will begin at 2:00 PM on Thursday, April 20th, while the semifinals will occur on Friday, April 21st, at 2:00 PM. The championship and third-place matches will start at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 22nd.
Barry, Nova Southeastern, Saint Leo, and Lynn hold the top four positions in the ITA's April 12th collegiate rankings. FSC has the No. 13 position, Tampa is No. 17, and ERAU is No. 39. Five SSC athletes rank Top-10 in the ITA national singles rankings, led by No. 1 Deniz Khazan of Barry. Marta Vicens Miquel from Saint Leo is No. 4, Julie Razafindranaly from NSU is No. 6, Lynn's Salma Djoubri and Greta Schieroni are No. 8 and No. 10, respectively. In doubles play, three SSC squads hold the top three positions in the ITA rankings. Natalie Espinal / Fatima Bizhukova from NSU clock in at No. 1, followed by Barry's Khazan / Danilela Farfan and Saint Leo's Vicens Miquel / Lavinia Lancellotti.
Barry leads the SSC with seven women's tennis national championships, including five straight titles from 2017 to 2022. Lynn is second in the SSC with three trophies, the last coming in 2001. The first women's tennis national championship won by an SSC institution belongs to former member the University of North Florida, which took home the 1994 national title.
