SSC Athletes of the Week | March 20 - 26, 2023
Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 20 - 26, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.
Baseball Player of the Week
Danny Gutcher / Tampa / So. / Catcher / Tampa, Florida
Gutcher picks up Player of the Week for his efforts in Tampa's three-game sweep at Nova Southeastern. The Tampa product produced a .429/.692/1.429 slash line as the Spartans won the three games by a combined score of 29 to 4. Gutcher was 3-for-7 at the plate last week with three extra-base hits (including two home runs), eight runs batted in, and six runs scored. The sophomore earned six walks and stole two bases in two attempts. His top game of the week was the first of Saturday's doubleheader, where he went 2-for-3 with six RBI, three runs scored, a walk, and a home run. Defensively, the catcher had 12 putouts and three assists in 15 chances. He also threw out on baserunner in three attempts.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Alex Canney / Tampa / So. / Valrico, Florida
Canney takes Pitcher of the Week honors for his work on the mound in a 12-1 win at Nova Southeastern. The Valrico, Florida native started the game for the Spartans, allowing four hits and no runs in six innings. Canney earned the victory by striking out three and walking one batter. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Softball Player of the Week
Larken Maseda / Palm Beach Atlantic / Fr. / Catcher / Land O' Lakes, Florida
Maseda is selected as Player of the Week for her role in Palm Beach Atlantic's three-game sweep of Lynn. The freshman from Land O' Lakes, Florida, was 6-for-10 at the plate with eight runs batted in, three runs scored, two stolen bases, a double, and a home run. Maseda recorded a hit and multiple RBI in all three games. For the week, she recorded a .600 batting average, a .600 on-base percentage, and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Defensively, the catcher registered seven putouts in seven chances and turned one double play.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Emily MacMullen / Rollins / So. / Palm City, Florida
MacMullen is named Pitcher of the Week following three wins and a save in five appearances on the road last week for the Tars. The Palm City, Florida native began the week with two innings of work against Flagler, earning the save after allowing a hit and no walks. She followed with a seven-inning complete-game shutout of Flagler, allowing five hits, no walks, and no runs. In SSC action against Barry, MacMullen opened the series with a complete game victory. She allowed three hits, two walks, and four runs (all unearned) in her seven innings in the circle. The sophomore entered game two in the sixth inning and tossed 6.2 innings of scoreless ball to earn the win. Finally, MacMullen recorded one inning of work in the series finale with no hits, walks, or runs allowed. For the week, MacMullen struck out 23 batters, allowed 14 hits, issued six walks, allowed no earned runs, and held opposing hitters to a .165 batting average.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Luke McAnaney / Tampa / Gr. / Attack / Syracuse, New York
McAnaney earns Offensive Player of the Week laurels with his play in Tampa's wins over No. 13 Colorado Mesa (19-11) and Westminster (11-10). The Syracuse, New York native had four goals, including the game-winner, against Colorado Mesa. Against Westminster, McAnaney scored a game-high five goals and, with his two assists, registered a game-high seven points. McAnaney scored his nine goals off 15 shots and 11 shots on goal. The grad student also gave the Spartans five groundballs across the two wins. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Nick Shannon / Florida Southern / Sr. / Def. / Boynton Beach, Florida
Shannon wins Defensive Player of the Week following his performances in Florida Southern's wins at Lynn (22-6) and against Westminster (14-7). The Boynton Beach, Florida product tallied four groundballs, a team-high for non-faceoff players, and a game-high three caused turnovers in the win at Lynn. Shannon followed seven groundballs, a game-high for non-faceoff players, and a game-high six caused turnovers in the victory over Westminster. Offensively, Shannon had an assist against Lynn. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Jacob Czyz / Florida Southern / Fr. / FOS / Baldwinsville, New York
Czyz is named Specialist of the Week for the second time in 2023 after performing well in the X during wins at Lynn (22-6) and against Westminster (14-7). The freshman from Baldwinsville, New York, won 18-of-23 faceoffs in the conference opener at Lynn for a .783 win percentage. He also had a game-high 11 groundballs in the win. Against Westminster, Czyz won 11 of 24 faceoffs and picked up seven groundballs.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Abigail Cawley / Rollins / Sr. / Attack / Bernardsville, New Jersey
Cawley led Rollins to a win over No. 24 Colorado Mesa to garner Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. She tallied game-highs in goals (4), assists (4), and points (8) and also picked up a groundball in the win. The senior from Bernardsville, New Jersey, scored all her goals in the second half during open play. Cawley scored three consecutive goals to turn an 8-5 deficit into an 8-8 tie late in the third quarter. Her scores came off eight total shots and five shots on goal.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Jessica Harclerode / Saint Leo / Fr. / Goal / Sayville, New York
Harclerode wins Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in 2023 with her performance in Saint Leo's loss at No. 15 Flagler (11-18) and wins against No. 24 Colorado Mesa (13-7) and Frostburg State (18-10). The freshman from Sayville, New York, made 30 saves and allowed 33 goals while facing 78 total shots and 63 shots on goal across the three contests. She also provided her team with four groundballs last week.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Yaron Guberman / Lynn / Fr. / Modiin, Israel
Guberman collects Athlete of the Week recognition after a 3-0 week against St. Olaf and No. 5 West Alabama. The Israeli helped Lynn to a 7-0 win over St. Olaf with a 6-0 win at #2 doubles with partner Ray Chavez and a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3 singles. Against UWA, Guberman and Chavez went unfinished (5-4) at #2 doubles as Lynn lost the point. The freshman was victorious, 6-2, 7-5, at #3 singles leading the Fighting Knights to a 4-2 victory.
Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Deniz Khazan / Barry / Sr. / Netanya, Israel
Khazan's singles performance at the #1 spot lifted No. 1 Barry over No. 2 Nova Southeastern and earned her Athlete of the Week. After losing by the thinnest margin (711-69) in #1 doubles to the nation's top duo, Khazan earned redemption against No. 9 Julie Razafindranaly at #1 singles. The Top-10 pair battled for three sets, with Khazan emerging victorious (5-7, 6-3, 77-64). Her win secured the 4-3 match win for the undefeated Buccaneers.
Men's Golf Athlete of the Week
AJ Ewart / Barry University / Sr. / Coquitlam, British Columbia
Ewart gathers Golfer of the Week after winning the Bobcat Invitational at the Golf Club of Cuscowilla in Eatonton, Georgia. The Canadian bested a field of 82 golfers to win the event, finishing 5-under following rounds of 70 and 65. It stands as the 12th tournament win of his career. The weekly award is the 12th of Ewart's career, keeping him first all-time in SSC men's golf, tied for second for Barry, and tied for eight in SSC history.
Women's Golf Athlete of the Week
Ellen Andersson / Nova Southeastern / Jr. / Falköping, Sweden
Andersson is honored as Golfer of the Week for the second time in 2022-23 after winning the Buccaneer Invitational at Miami Shores Country Club in Miami Shores, Florida. The Swede bested a field of 68 golfers, finishing even following rounds of 70-66-77. With the play of Andersson, NSU won this year's event against a 12-team field by 19 strokes.
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week
Varsity 8 / Embry-Riddle
Embry-Riddle's Varsity 8 boat of Megan Byrne (coxswain), Shelby Ernst, Kendra Sander, Aria Moses, Sofia Lorenzini, Elise Dezotell, Alexandra Weilert, Soleil Edwards, and Helena Schmidt finished first in the program's first-ever home dual. ERAU completed the 2,000-meter race in 7:42.6, over eight seconds faster than Barry. The mark is the largest margin of victory for an Eagles' Eight boat this season.
