SSC Athletes of the Week | February 6 - 12, 2023
Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 6 - 12, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.
Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Jadin Booth / Florida Southern / So. / Guard / Omaha, Nebraska
Booth is selected Player of the Week for the second time in 2022-23 after leading FSC to conference victories over Rollins and Tampa. The guard from Omaha, Nebraska, started the week with 21 points, five assists, and three rebounds in a 124-113 overtime win against Rollins. He followed with a game-high 37 points as FSC defeated Tampa, 91-84, on the road. The sophomore added five rebounds and four assists to his stat sheet in the victory. Booth totaled 58 points by shooting 55% from the field (18-33), 44% from behind the arc (7-16), and 100% from the free-throw line (15-15). He averaged 29.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game while playing 80 minutes and recording zero turnovers.
Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Nordin Kapic / Lynn / Fr. / Forward / Vienna, Austria
Kapic collects Defensive Player of the Week following his play in a pair of conference games. The Austrian pulled down 13 defensive rebounds during a road game at Barry. He then recorded 11 defensive rebounds, two steals, and a block against Rollins. Offensively, the freshman forward had 51 points, six offensive rebounds, and two assists in the two contests.
Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Sydney Kin / Tampa / Sr. / Forward-Center / Carey, Ohio
Kin is awarded Player of the Week honors for the fourth time in 2022-23 with her play in Tampa's wins over Saint Leo and Florida Southern. In a 78-62 win against Saint Leo, Kin tallied a 20-point / 11-rebound double-double. The Carey, Ohio product then recorded a 20-point / 12-rebound double-double, both game highs, in a 65-44 win against FSC. Kin added two blocks and a steal in the victory. Last week, the forward/center totaled 40 points by shooting 56% from the field (15-27) and 77% from the line (10-13). Kin averaged 20.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 1.0 blocks, 1.0 steals, and 33.5 minutes per game.
Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Jada Marone / Lynn / Gr. / Guard / Lakewood, Ohio
Marone picks up Defensive Player of the Week accolades with her performance in SSC wins over Barry and Rollins. The Lakewood, Ohio, product tallied four steals and six defensive rebounds in a 73-52 win against Barry. At Rollins, Marone recorded a steal and five defensive rebounds, helping Lynn secure a 58-45 road win. Offensively, the graduate student provided the Fighting Knights with 40 points, six assists, and three offensive rebounds across the two contests.
Baseball Player of the Week
Drew Cavanaugh / Florida Southern / So. / Catcher / Rochester Hills, Michigan
Cavanaugh is tabbed Player of the Week after his performances against Eckerd and North Georgia. The sophomore catcher sported a .400/.571/1.000 slash line and reached base with four hits, including two home runs, in 10 at-bats and four walks. He began the week with a homer, two walks, and two runs scored in a single game against Eckerd. He then went 3-for-8 in two appearances at UNG, driving in three and scoring three times. Defensively, the Rochester Hills, Michigan product had 24 putouts and three assists in 28 chances and caught one runner stealing.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Dan Beebe / Palm Beach Atlantic / Gr. / Berlin, New Jersey
Beebe is awarded Pitcher of the Week after picking up a win against Washburn last week. The Berlin, New Jersey native tossed 7.0 innings, allowing five hits and no runs as the Sailfish secured an 8-0 win. Beebe struck out a career-high 10 batters and issued one walk in the contest.
Softball Player of the Week
Alexis Smith / Nova Southeastern / Sr. / Outfield / Tampa, Florida
Smith collects Player of the Week for her efforts in NSU's 5-1 record last week. The Sharks' lead-off hitter went 13-for-22 at the plate with seven triples, 11 runs scored, 10 runs batted in, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Along with her .591 batting average, she registered a .625 on-base percentage and a 1.227 slugging percentage. The Tampa native had 27 total bases across the six games and stole eight bags in nine attempts. Smith's top performance came against Mars Hill, where she went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored, three triples, and six RBI. Defensively, the outfielder registered 12 putouts in 14 chances. The weekly award is the second of her career.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Mary Beth Feldman / Tampa / Jr. / Lithia, Florida
Feldman wins Pitcher of the Week by tossing a complete-game shutout against No. 4 Auburn-Montgomery. The Lithia, Florida native threw 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and no runs as the Spartans secured a 2-0 win. Feldman struck out five batters and issued two walks in the contest. The weekly award is the third of her career.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Justin Williams / Saint Leo / Sr. / Attack / Clermont, Florida
Williams receives Offensive Player of the Week accolades after his performance in Saint Leo's narrow loss to No. 6 Limestone. The Attack from Clermont, Florida, scored a game-high five goals and added two assists for a game-high seven points in the loss. Williams connected on his five scores off 10 total shots and seven shots on goal. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Blake Ulmer / Tampa / Sr. / Goal / Naples, Florida
Ulmer repeats as Defensive Player of the Week with an 18-save performance against No. 19 Wilmington. The senior from Naples, Florida, allowed just four goals and picked up six ground balls during his 45 minutes in net as the Spartans recorded the 25-5 victory. Ulmer tallied a .818 save percentage while facing 22 shots on goal. The weekly award is the ninth of his career, tying him for fourth all-time among SSC men's lacrosse athletes.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Julia Kolderman / Tampa / Gr. / Attack / Naples, Florida
Kolderman outscored both of Tampa's opponents in a pair of road wins to claim Offensive Player of the Week honors. The grad student from Naples, Florida, scored five times, including two free position goals, and picked up three ground balls in the 19-4 victory against Montevallo. Kolderman scored six times and picked up a ground ball as UT posted a 19-3 win over Alabama - Huntsville. She tallied her 11 goals last week off 12 total shots and 11 shots on goal.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Caroline Gastonguay / Rollins / Gr. / Attack / Lewiston, Maine
Gastonguay receives Defensive Player of the Week honors following her performance in Rollins' two road victories. The grad student from Lewiston, Maine, tallied game-highs in caused turnovers (4) and ground balls (5) in the Tars' 10-9 win at Lenoir-Rhyne. Gastonguay then recorded a game-high six ground balls and a team-high three caused turnovers in a 13-8 win at Limestone. Offensively, Gastonguay provided the Tars with seven goals and eight assists across the two victories.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Matteo Feggi / Florida Southern / So. / Hesse, Germany
Feggi takes Athlete of the Week honors following his play against No. 12 Lynn and No. 1 Barry. The German and teammate Chris Fok Kow helped the Moccasins to the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Lynn's #1 duo. He went on to win the #6 court with a 6-4, 7-5 decision and was the only Moccasin singles court to win during the 4-2 loss. Against No. 1 Barry, Feggi and Fok Kow, won 6-3 at #1 doubles. At #6 singles, the sophomore won his first set 6-2 before a close 5-7 second set loss. In a third-set tiebreaker, Feggi won 12-10 as FSC narrowly missed an upset against No. 1 Barry.
Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Kamilya Shailina / Saint Leo / So. / Almaty, Kazakhstan
Shailina repeats as Athlete of the Week following her role in Saint Leo wins over No. 16 Embry-Riddle and Palm Beach Atlantic. Against ERAU, Shailina picked up a 6-1 victory, with partner Luzia Obermeier, at #2 doubles to start the match. Shailina then bested her regionally ranked opponent 6-3, 6-3 at #4 singles. Against Palm Beach Atlantic, Shailina and Obermeier won #2 doubles 6-2, and Shailina won at #4 singles 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Men's Golf Athlete of the Week
Felipe Alvarez / Barry / Sr. / Bogota, Colombia
Alvarez is named Golfer of the Week after winning the Matlock Collegiate Classic at Lone Palm Golf Club in Lakeland. The Colombian tied for first following 54-holes with a 1-over, 217. He secured the top medalist honors by winning a one-hole playoff against Freddie Parlby of Florida Southern. Alvarez finished the three-round event with scores of 73-71-73, led in par-3 scoring (even), and tied for second in par-5 scoring (7-under). The field included seven squads ranked or receiving votes in the latest coaches poll. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Women's Golf Athlete of the Week
Olivia Grønborg / Nova Southeastern / Fr. / Helsingør, Denmark
Grønborg earns Golfer of the Week for the second time in 2022-23 after winning the World Golf Invitational at Slammer & Squire Golf Course in St. Augustine. The Dane bested the field of 81 golfers, registering a score of 7-under following rounds of 69-70-70 (209). Grønborg finished the event tied for second in par-4 scoring (3-under) and first in par-5 scoring (5-under). With her strong play, Nova Southeastern took home the team trophy. Eleven of the 15 teams in the field ranked Top-40 in Golfstat's team ranking.
