SSC Athletes of the Week | February 13 - 19, 2023

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 13 - 19, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Kanon Koster / Saint Leo / Jr. / Guard / Kearney, Nebraska
Koster is selected Player of the Week after leading Saint Leo to conference road wins over Rollins and Lynn. The guard from Kearney, Nebraska, began the week with a game-high 35 points, five rebounds, and three assists in an 89-75 win at Rollins. He followed with 22 points as Saint Leo defeated Lynn, 81-66, on the road. Koster totaled 57 points by shooting 47% from the field (18-38), 33% from behind the arc (4-12), and 89% from the free-throw line (17-19). He averaged 28.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.0 steals per game while playing 66 minutes and recording zero turnovers.

Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Jake Maranville / Nova Southeastern / So. / Guard / Uniontown, Ohio
Maranville picks up Defensive Player of the Week following his play in a pair of conference wins. The guard from Uniontown, Ohio had three steals, a blocked shot, and one defensive rebound in a 90-71 win against Barry. He then registered four steals and two defensive rebounds in a 115-77 win at Tampa. Offensively, the sophomore had 18 points, two offensive rebounds, and two assists in the two contests.
 

Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Sydney Kin / Tampa / Sr. / Forward-Center / Carey, Ohio
Kin repeats as Player of the Week with her play in Tampa's wins over No. 7 Eckerd and Nova Southeastern. In a Top-10 matchup at Eckerd, Kin tallied a 24-point / 13-rebound double-double which piloted the Spartans to an 84-79 overtime win. The Carey, Ohio, product scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds in an 80-53 win against Nova Southeastern. Last week, the forward/center totaled 59 points by shooting 81% from the field (21-26) and 73% from the line (8-11). Kin averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 34.0 minutes per game. The weekly award is her seventh of the season.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Ella Fiore / Lynn / So. / Guard / Narragansett, Rhode Island
Fiore grabs Defensive Player of the Week honors following her play in Lynn wins over Palm Beach Atlantic and Saint Leo. The Narragansett, Rhode Island product tallied five steals, two blocks, and 10 defensive rebounds in a 78-72 win at PBA. Fiore also tallied four steals and three defensive rebounds in an 81-75 win over Saint Leo. Offensively, the sophomore provided the Fighting Knights with 38 points, four assists, and one offensive rebound across the two contests.
 

Baseball Player of the Week

Jorge Ramirez / Rollins / Sr. / Designated Hitter / Orlando, Florida
Ramirez is selected Player of the Week after producing a .545/.643/1.091 slash line in a series win against No. 17 Quincy. The senior DH went 6-for-11 at the plate during the three-game set with two home runs, four runs scored, and six runs batted in. Ramirez drew one walk and was hit by a pitch twice during his 14 plate appearances. The Orlando native's top performance came in game two, where he went 4-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored, and two home runs.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Drew Dwyer / Lynn / Sr. / Fort Myers, Florida
Dwyer is named Pitcher of the Week after blanking Southern Connecticut State over six innings last week. The Fort Myers, Florida native allowed no hits and no runs as Lynn secured a 10-2 win. Dwyer earned the win by striking out 12 batters and issuing just one walk in the contest.
 

Softball Player of the Week

Alexandra Hare / Saint Leo / Jr. / Infield / Trinity, Florida
Hare captures Player of the Week for her execution at the plate in Saint Leo's three-game sweep at Palm Beach Atlantic. The Lions' lead-off hitter went 10-for-11 at the plate with two extra-base hits, two runs scored, and seven runs batted in. Hare totaled a .909 batting average, a .769 on-base percentage, and a 1.182 slugging percentage. The Trinity, Florida product, had multiple hits in all three games, including two 4-for-4 performances. Defensively, the infielder registered two putouts and five assists in seven chances. The weekly award is the second of her career.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Maci Barnhart / Barry / Jr. / Sebring, Florida
Barnhart earns Pitcher of the Week accolades by tossing 16 innings of shutout softball last week. The Sebring, Florida native began the week with a save following four strikeouts and no hits or walks in two innings of work against Flagler. Barnhart went on to record two complete game shutouts of conference-foe Florida Southern. The junior tossed 14 innings against FSC, allowing four hits, no walks, and striking out 24 batters. Her 17 strikeouts in game one marked a career-high. She held opposing hitters to a .075 batting average for the week and registered a 0.250 WHIP. The weekly award is the third of her career.

 
 

Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Isaiah Hines / Embry-Riddle / Jr. / Attack / Dallas, Texas
Hines secures Offensive Player of the Week after setting the Embry-Riddle program record for goals and points in a game. The Attack from Dallas, Texas set the program records with nine goals and 10 points in the Eagles' 18-15 win over Montevallo on the road. Hines' nine-goal performance ties Lucas Claude of Florida Southern (3/28/18 vs. Alabama-Huntsville) for the second-most single-game goals in SSC history. The junior also scored a game-high four goals in ERAU's 18-10 road win at Alabama - Huntsville. Hines totaled 13 goals, three assists, five ground balls, and one caused turnover on the week. Hines scored his 13 goals on 25 shots and 23 shots on goal.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Matthew Beddow / Tampa / Sr. / LSM-Defender / San Diego, California
Beddow takes Defensive Player of the Week following his performances in Tampa's wins against Flagler (22-7) and No. 3 Lenoir-Rhyne (13-9). The San Diego product tallied a game-high four caused turnovers and picked up two ground balls as the Spartans held the Lenoir-Rhyne to their lowest scoring total this year. Against Flagler, Beddow picked up four ground balls for the Spartans and caused a turnover. The weekly award is the third of his career.

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

Michael Flores / Saint Leo / Jr. / FOS / Apopka, Florida
Flores grabs Specialist of the Week for his performance in the X against Montevallo and Alabama-Huntsville. The Apopka, Florida product won 19 of 28 faceoffs and picked up 15 ground balls in SLU's loss at UAH. Flores took 12 of 24 faceoffs at Montevallo and picked up eight ground balls in the Lions' loss. Flores also scored in both contests and added an assist against UAH. The weekly award is the second of his career.
 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Abigail Cawley / Rollins / Sr. / Attack / Bernardsville, New Jersey
Cawley led Rollins to a win over No. 5 Grand Valley State to garner Offensive Player of the Week honors. She tallied game-highs in goals (4), assists (5), points (9), and caused turnovers (2) in the win. The senior from Bernardsville, New Jersey, scored her four goals off six total shots, all of which were on goal.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Gina Verrone / Florida Southern / Gr. / Defender / Flanders, New Jersey
Verone snags Defensive Player of the Week honors following her performance in Florida Southern's road wins at No. 23 Mount Olive (21-12) and No. 13 Wingate (14-12). The Flanders, New Jersey native paced Florida Southern with a game-high 12 draw controls, two caused turnovers, and a ground ball against Mount Olive. She followed with an eight-draw control day against Wingate, adding four ground balls and three caused turnovers in the win.
 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Martin Soukal / Saint Leo / Gr. / Brno, Czech Republic
Soukal earns Athlete of the Week laurels after leading Saint Leo to the ITA Division II National Team Indoor Championship. The Czech won at #2 singles (6-2, 6-4) in a 4-1 victory over No. 9 Hawaii Pacific to open the event. Next, he won against No. 34 Tommaso Schold at #2 singles (6-3, 6-4) in Saint Leo's 4-1 win over No. 2 Columbus State. The next day he bested No. 28 and Tom Zeuch in #2 singles (6-3, 2-6, 7-5), which gave Saint Leo the match-clinching point to defeat No. 7 UIndy and take home the title.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week


Diane Follin-Arbelet / Nova Southeastern / Sr. / Lyon, France
Follin-Arbelet collects Athlete of the Week honors by helping Nova Southeastern earn wins against No. 6 Lynn and No. 5 Flagler. Against Lynn, Follin-Arbelet and partner Eva Goncharov were victorious (6-2) at #2 doubles. The Lyon, France native went on to win (6-2, 7-5) at #5 singles as NSU earned the 4-3 conference victory. At Flagler, Follin-Arbelet won at #5 singles (77-61, 6-3) as the Sharks took the 5-2 victory.

 

Women's Golf Athlete of the Week

Maria Hoyos / Lynn / Gr. / Pereira, Colombia
Hoyos captures Golfer of the Week for the second time in 2022-23 after winning the Spring Kickoff Intercollegiate at the Golf Course at South Hampton in St. Augustine, Florida. The Colombian bested a field of 86 golfers by three strokes, finishing 1-over following rounds of 73-71-73 (217). With the play of Hoyos, Lynn took the title at this year's event at 17-over against a 17-team field.
