SSC Athletes of the Week | November 6 - 12, 2023
Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of November 6 - 12, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.
Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week
Nadia Lindner - Nova Southeastern
Grad Student - Outside Hitter - Whitby, Ontario
Lindner repeats as Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in Nova Southeastern's wins against Saint Leo and Eckerd. The Canadian began the week with 11 kills, nine digs, and a block in a 3-0 win against Saint Leo. Lindner then led NSU to a 3-1 victory against Eckerd following a match-high 21 kills, six digs, and two blocks. Lindner tallied 32 kills (4.47/s), 15 digs (2.14/s), and a .300 hitting percentage across her seven sets played. The weekly award is the sixth of her career and fourth in 2023.
Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week
JJ Ramirez - Tampa
Junior - Libero/Defensive Specialist - Fleming Island, Florida
Ramirez earns a third Defensive Player of the Week accolade in 2023 for her role in Tampa's wins over Rollins and Florida Tech. The libero from Fleming Island, Florida, began the week with a match-high 19 digs in a sweep of the Tars. She followed with a match-high 24 digs in a four-set win against the Panthers. Ramirez averaged 6.3 digs per match last week and added three aces and six assists to her stat sheet.
Volleyball Setter of the Week
Madison Cook - Nova Southeastern
Grad Student - Oviedo, Florida
Cook is awarded Setter of the Week for the fourth time in 2023 and repeats from last week for her performance in NSU's wins against Saint Leo and Eckerd. The graduate student from Oviedo, Florida, opened last week with a match-high 39 assists in a 3-0 victory against Saint Leo. She then posted a match-high 46 assists in a 3-1 win against Eckerd. Cook averaged 12.1 assists, 2.3 digs, and 0.6 blocks per set while leading the Sharks to a league-high .329 team-hitting percentage last week. The weekly award is the eighth of her career.
Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Isaiah Placide - Eckerd
Junior - Guard - Hampton, Georgia
Placide is selected Player of the Week after a top performance at the ECE Classic in St. Petersburg. The guard from Hampton, Georgia, opened the season with a game-high 26 points as Eckerd fell to Benedict (71-66). The junior helped the Tritons bounce back by scoring a game-high 22 points in a win against Allen (65-55). Placide totaled 48 points by shooting 45% from the field (15-33), 44% from behind the arc (8-18), and 83% from the free-throw line (10-12). He averaged 24.0 points, 3.5 rebounds, and just 0.5 turnovers while playing 35.0 minutes per game.
Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Alex Steen - Florida Southern
Sophomore - Forward - Panama City Beach, Florida
Steen repeats as Defensive Player of the Week with his performance in FSC's 1-1 week. The sophomore registered four blocks, two steals, and 12 defensive rebounds in a win against Savannah State (78-63). The Panama City Beach, Florida product followed with five blocks, a steal, and three defensive rebounds in a loss to Auburn-Montgomery (68-65). Offensively, he scored 29 points with a .722 field goal percentage and pulled down 10 offensive rebounds across the two games.
Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Sarah Lange - Florida Southern
Junior - Center - Munich, Germany
Lange garners Player of the Week after leading Florida Southern to regional wins over Alabama-Huntsville and No. 21 Lee in the SSC/GSC Crossover. In FSC's season-opening 55-49 win against UAH, the German scored a game-high 15 points while pulling in eight rebounds, dishing three assists, and blocking three shots. Lange followed with game-highs in points (17) and rebounds (7) to go along with three assists and a block in a 76-64 win over Lee. The junior totaled 32 points by shooting 63% from the field (12-19) and 62% from the free-throw line (8-13). She averaged 16.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 blocks in 25 minutes per game.
Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Andjela Pavicevic - Saint Leo
Junior - Forward - Kula, Serbia
Pavicevic collects Defensive Player of the Week following her SSC / SIAC Challenge performance in Saint Leo. The junior forward registered 12 blocks, two steals, and 12 defensive rebounds as the Lions defeated Central State (78-72) and narrowly lost to Clark Atlanta (76-75). Her nine-block performance against Central State is tied for the sixth in SSC single-game history. Offensively, she tallied 18 points, four assists, and two offensive rebounds.
Men's Swimmer of the Week
Akos Hajagos - Florida Tech
Freshman - Budapest, Hungary
Hajagos receives Swimmer of the Week accolades for the second time in 2023-24 following his achievements in a tri-meet against Indian River State and Keiser. The freshman from Hungary recorded a victory in the 200 Free (1:39.32), besting second place by two seconds. In relay competition, Hajagos led the Panther's 800 Medley team to a fourth-place finish (7:43.58).
Women's Swimmer of the Week
Rae Ann Dressel - Florida Tech
Senior - Wenatchee, Washington
Dressel nabs Swimmer of the Week following her two podiums in Florida Tech's tri-meet against Indian River State and Keiser. The Wenatchee, Washington native took second in the 50 Breast (30.23). In relay action, Dressel led the Panther's 200 Free team to a third-place finish (1:40.10).
