SSC Athletes of the Week | October 9 - 15, 2023

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of October 9 - 15, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week

Aline Olegario - Lynn
Junior - Middle Blocker - Balneario Camboriu, Brazil


Olegario collects Offensive Player of the Week laurels following 40 kills, 46.0 points, and a .380 hitting percentage on the road last week for Lynn. The Brazilian began the week with nine kills on 20 attempts and three errors in a 3-0 loss at Palm Beach Atlantic. She followed with a match-high 16 kills on 31 attempts and three errors in a 3-1 loss at Eckerd. Finally, Olegario registered a match-high 15 kills on 28 attempts with four errors in a 3-0 win at Saint Leo. The junior provided the Fighting Knights with 4.0 kills and 0.8 blocks per set across the three contests. The weekly award is her second this season.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

Jaida Clark - Eckerd
Junior - Middle Blocker - Murfreesboro, Tennessee


Clark picks up her second Defensive Player of the Week honor in 2023 as Eckerd went the season 3-0 at home last week. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee native averaged 1.50 blocks and 2.50 kills per set while attacking at a .346 percentage. The junior led the Tritons to wins over Saint Leo (3-0), Lynn (3-1), and Barry (3-0). Clark totaled 15 blocks, including a solo block, five digs, three aces, and 25 kills across the three contests.

Volleyball Setter of the Week

Madison Cook - Nova Southeastern
Grad Student - Oviedo, Florida


Cook is awarded Setter of the Week for the second time in 2023 following three Nova Southeastern conference wins. The Oviedo, Florida product began the week with a match-high 54 assists in a 3-1 victory at Barry. She then posted a match-high 36 assists as the Sharks bested Florida Tech in four sets and a match-high 32 assists in a sweep of Rollins over the weekend. The graduate student averaged 11.1 assists and 2.2 digs per set while leading the Sharks to a .83 team-hitting percentage over the three contests. The weekly award is the sixth of her career..
 


Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Ettore Casadei - Florida Tech
Senior - Forward - Cervia, Italy


Casadei earns Offensive Player of the Week with two game-winning goals last week for Florida Tech. The Italian scored the only goal in Florida Tech's win over Barry, connecting on a Fabio Amaral assist in the 17th minute. The goal ultimately handed the Buccaneers its first SSC loss in 2023. Against Tampa, the senior assisted on Joakim Jahnsen's goal in the 63rd minute, which knotted the score at two goals a piece. Casadei then came through with late-game heroics, scoring a game-winner in the 88th minute.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

Iker Bastida - Florida Tech
Grad. Student - Goalkeeper - Azpeitia, Spain


Bastida is awarded Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in Florida Tech's two wins. The Spaniard helped the Panthers shutout Barry on the road, 1-0, with six saves while facing 12 total shots and seven corner kicks. The grad student also registered two saves and allowed two goals in FT's 3-2 win over Tampa. He faced seven total shots in the victory.
 


Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Aisling Spillane - Eckerd
Junior - Midfielder - Dublin, Ireland


Spillane takes Offensive Player of the Week following a hat-trick in a 5-0 road win against No. 16 Nova Southeastern. The midfielder from Dublin, Ireland, began the scoring with a long-distance goal in the ninth minute from a Sophia Butkovich assist. The junior then added penalty kick goals in the 20th and 39th minutes to earn the hat-trick. She also assisted on Brook Bisko's goal in the 64th minute. Spillane scored her three goals in 84 minutes on the pitch with three total shots.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

Cadence Talbert - Eckerd
Junior - Goalkeeper - Geneseo, Illinois


Talbert earns Defensive Player of the Week following her clean sheet on the road against No. 16 Nova Southeastern. The Geneseo, Illinois product was peppered with 31 total shots and three corner kicks but made 18 saves to shut out the Sharks. Talbert's 18 single-game saves rank tied for seventh in SSC women's soccer history, third most in NCAA DII in 2023, and tops in SSC this season.
 


Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week

Karl van Gelder - Florida Southern
Sophomore - Orlando, Florida


van Gelder receives Runner of the Week honors for his performance at the SSC Preview Meet at Holloway Park in Lakeland, Florida. The sophomore from Orlando, Florida, crossed the line ninth, earning his first career Top-10. van Gelder's 8000-meter race time of 27:01.7 placed him first among all NCAA Division II runners and helped Florida Southern to a third-place team finish.

Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week


Rachel Hockenberry - Florida Southern
Sophomore - Sewickley, Pennsylvania


Hockenberry nabs Runner of the Week with her efforts performance at the SSC Preview Meet at Holloway Park in Lakeland, Florida. The sophomore from Sewickley, Pennsylvania, finished 25th in the 6,000-meter race at 25:43.03. Hockenberry led Florida Southern to a fifth-place team finish.
 


Women's Golfer of the Week

Pia Perthen - Saint Leo
Junior - Tyrol, Austria


Perthen garners Golfer of the Week after finishing tied for 13th at the LeeAnn Noble Memorial Golf Tournament at Achasta Golf Club in Dahlonega, Georgia. The Austrian shot a 5-over, 221, against a field of 85 golfers. With the play of Perthen, Saint Leo finished 5th in a 16-team field.
 


Men's Swimmer of the Week

Santiago Corredor - Tampa
Senior - Fort Myers, Florida


Corredor picks up Swimmer of the Week after being named High Point Award recipient at the Shark Invitational. The senior from Fort Myers, Florida, won the 200 IM (1:50.16), 400 IM (3:56.52), 200 Fly (1:48.18), and 200 Back (1:46.08). With his teammates, he was victorious in the 200 Medley Relay (1:28.17), 400 Free Relay (2:59.35), and 400 Medley Relay (3:14.24). With the efforts of Corredor, UT won the event over a field of eight teams. The weekly award is the second of his career.


Women's Swimmer of the Week

Emily Trieschmann - Nova Southeastern
Junior - Lake Worth, Florida


Trieschmann repeats as Swimmer of the Week after being named the High Point Award recipient at the Shark Invitational. The Lake Worth, Florida product won the 200 free (1:50.66) and the 500 free (4:57.67). She took second in the 200 medley relay (1:45.35), 1000 free (10:15.38), and the 400 free relay (3:29.41). The weekly award is the fifth of her career.
