SSC Athletes of the Week | January 9 - 15, 2023

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of January 9 - 15, 2023. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Nordin Kapic / Lynn / Fr. / Forward / Vienna, Austria
Kapic recorded two double-doubles for the Fighting Knights on his way to Player of the Week honors. The Austrian provided Lynn with game-highs in points (29) and rebounds (16) in an 81-72 road loss to Rollins. The freshman followed with 31 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs, in an 87-85 win over Barry. Kapic scored his 60 points last week by shooting 66% from the field (21-32), 75% from behind the arc (3-4), and 83% from the line (15-18). He averaged 30.0 points, 13.5 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while playing 71 minutes.
 

Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Martin Elias / Florida Tech / Jr. / Forward / Green Cove Springs, Florida
Elias is tabbed Defensive Player of the Week with his performance in Florida Tech's 76-61 win over Embry-Riddle. The Green Cove Springs, Florida product recorded game-highs in defensive rebounds (8) and blocks (4) in the victory. Elias also had one steal and helped the Panthers hold the Eagles to a .276 second-half field goal percentage and a season-low in points.
 

Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Melijah Sullivan / Tampa / Sr. / Guard / Bartow, Florida
Sullivan earns Player of the Week accolades for her performance in wins over two SSC opponents at the top of the league standings. The Bartow, Florida product tallied 18 points, and seven rebounds as Tampa defeated Nova Southeastern, 78-77, in Fort Lauderdale. The senior then posted 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds in Tampa's 56-54 win against No. 8 Eckerd. Sullivan drew a foul on a successful jump shot with the Spartans trailing by one point in the game's final possession. She hit the ensuing free throw to secure the two-point win and pull Tampa into a tie for first in the league standings at 8-1 with Eckerd. Sullivan totaled 33 points last week by shooting 58% from the field (11-19) and 92% from the free-throw line (11-12). She averaged 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while playing 64 minutes. The weekly award is the fifth of her career.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Sydney Kin / Tampa / Sr. / Forward-Center / Carey, Ohio
Kin repeats as Defensive Player of the Week with her efforts in wins over two SSC opponents at the top of the league standings. The Carey, Ohio native tallied two steals, a block, and six defensive rebounds in UT's 78-77 win at Nova Southeastern. Against No. 8 Eckerd, Kin tallied four blocks and nine defensive rebounds, helping the Spartans secure a 56-54 win. Kin scored 37 points and recorded six offensive rebounds in the two contests. The weekly award is the fifth of her career.
 

Men's Swimmer of the Week

Keith Peristeridis / Florida Southern / Jr. / Kalamazoo, Michigan
Peristeridis nets Swimmer of the Week for the second time in 2022-23 for his performances against Saint Leo and Nova Southeastern. The Kalamazoo, Michigan native earned two event wins in a conference victory over Saint Leo. He placed first in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.99 and the 500 free with a 4:36.91 finish, as well as a 400 medley relay win. Against Nova Southeastern, Peristeridis won the 1000 free with a B standard time of 9:19.81 and 22 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. He went on to win the 500 free, with a time of 4:34.01.

Women's Swimmer of the Week

Celina Marquez / Nova Southeastern / Sr. / Santa Tecla, El Salvador
Marquez earned four individual wins and added a relay victory on her way to SSC Swimmer of the Week. The El Salvadoran's won the 100-backstroke (57.01) and 200-backstroke (2:06.51), competing in a dual against Florida Southern. During the NSU quad meet, Marquez was a part of the 200-medley relay winners, posting an individual time of 23.86. She followed with victories in the 100-backstroke (56.38) and 200-backstroke (2:03.60). The weekly award is the fourth of her career.
