MELBOURNE, Fla. - Barry University golf athlete Alice Götbring is named the 2021-22 Sunshine State Conference Female Athlete of the Year. Götbring finished the season as the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Golfer of the Year and GolfStat's NCAA Division II top-ranked player.
Voting for the award is conducted among Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Athletic Communication Directors, and Faculty Athletic Representatives from each of the 11 SSC member institutions.
Götbring, a junior from Vaxholm, Sweden, won five tournaments in 2021-22, including the SSC Championship and NCAA South Regional. She finished as runner-up three times in her remaining five tournaments and has posted a Top-2 finish in four straight events. Götbring tallied an 833-0 comparative record this season, including 24-0 against Top-25 and 99-0 against Top-100 opponents. Her 72.79 scoring average is the best in Division II this year. Götbring currently ranks 250th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).
With the play of Götbring, the Buccaneers finished the season with three tournament wins, including the SSC championship. Barry finished fifth or better 12 times, most notably at the national championship, where Götbring was the top SSC finisher during stroke play (T8th, 5-under). After qualifying for Medal Match Play, the Buccaneers ended the year as national semifinalists. Götbring was the team's leader in the playoffs, finishing a dominant +10 across her two matches.
Götbring becomes the seventh Barry student-athlete to be honored as SSC Female Athlete of the Year
1 and the third this decade, joining 2017-18 winner Sonja Larsen (tennis) and last year’s honoree Deniz Khazan (Tennis). She is also the eighth golf student-athlete to win the Female Athlete of the Year
2 since the award was established in 1987-88.
