MELBOURNE, Fla. – Florida Tech women's swimmer Savannah Brennan becomes the first individual to win three Sunshine State Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. The swim team captain recently completed her Master's in Biotechnology with a 4.00-grade point average.
Voting for the award is conducted among Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Athletic Communication Directors, and Faculty Athletic Representatives from the 11 SSC member institutions.
Brennan, a native of Oviedo, Florida, was tabbed a First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American following the 2021-22 season. The award follows her Second Team honor in 2020-21, after completing a double major in Genomics and Molecular Genetics and Biomedical Science with a 3.97-grade point average. Brennan stays perfect in earning every CSCAA Scholar All-American, SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Athletic Director's Honor Roll, and Dean's List award she has been eligible for during her career.
In the pool, Brennan earned three CSCAA All-America honors this year for her performances in 400 Individual Medley, 1000 Free, and 500 Free at the NCAA Division II championship. She placed ninth in the 400 IM with a time of 4:18.40 and 10th in the 500 Free with a time of 4:54.56. Her best finish came in the 1000 Free, where she finished fifth at 10:04.04. All three marks stand as Florida Tech records. Brennan now holds six school records in individual events and four relay records with her teammates.
This year, Brennan has continued to be impactful as a Graduate Researcher in Biotechnology by making valuable discoveries and developments over the past year. She also remains an active member of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics. Over her three-year stint as SSC Scholar-Athlete of the Year held various important positions, including President of Florida Tech's Tri-Beta National Biology Honor Society chapter, Secretary of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Research Fellow at the Mayo Clinic.
Brennan continues to give back in the pool by teaching children in the Melbourne community how to swim. During her time at Florida Tech, she generously gave her time to Team IMPACT and Holmes Regional Medical Center Emergency Department while coaching in various swim clubs.
She remains the first conference swimmer and third Florida Tech student-athlete to be honored as SSC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year since conference administrators established the award in 1995-96. Previous Panthers to win the honor were: Kari Wanat (Volleyball - 1999-00) and Marina DeBiasi (Cross Country - 2017-18).
