SSC Athletes of the Week | March 7 - 13, 2022
Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 7 - 13, 2022. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.
Baseball Player of the Week
EJ Cumbo / University of Tampa / So. / Outfield / East Meadow, New York
Cumbo collects Player of the Week after slashing .529/.600/.765 as the Spartans went 4-0 last week against Top-10 teams. The sophomore from East Meadow, New York, went 9-for-17 at the plate, with a home run, double, six runs scored, eight runs batted in, two walks, and was hit by a pitch. In a 9-2 win against No. 10 Seton Hill, Cumbo went 1-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored. In a three-game set at No. 1 Nova Southeastern, the outfielder recorded multiple hits and at least one run scored in each game. Defensively, Cumbo had 10 putouts in 10 chances. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jared Beck / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Davenport, Iowa
Beck picks up Pitcher of the Week after shutting down Barry in game one of a three-game conference series. The senior left-hander earned the win as the Lions bested the Buccaneers 13-0 in Saint Leo. In seven innings of work, Beck allowed four hits, no runs, two walks, and hit one batter while striking out 12 Buccaneers.
Softball Player of the Week
Mikayla Lewin / Florida Tech / Sr. / Outfield / Lower Hutt, New Zealand
Lewin is tabbed Player of the Week following her play in five Florida Tech contests last week. The Kiwi went 10-for-15 at the plate, with a home run and four doubles. Lewin drove in 12 runs, scored six times, drew two walks, and was hit by a pitch twice. The senior finished the week with a .500 batting average, a .500 on-base percentage, and a 1.000 slugging percentage as the Pathers won three times. Defensively, the outfielder had 12 putouts in 12 chances.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Mariah Galhouse / University of Tampa / Fr. / Spring Hill, Florida
Galhouse earns Pitcher of the Week accolades following three wins and two shutouts for the Spartans last week. The freshman allowed six hits, no walks, and no runs in nine innings, earning a win against Minnesota - Duluth. She went on to throw seven innings and allowed one run (earned), four hits, and a walk against Southwest Minnesota State. In her final appearance of the week, Galhouse tossed a seven-inning shutout against Florida Southern, allowing five hits and issuing a walk. She tallied a 0.39 ERA and .188 opponent batting average on the week.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Collin Stewart / Florida Tech / So. / Attack / Westminster, Maryland
Stewart is named Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Florida Tech’s matches at Wilmington and No. 2 Tampa. The sophomore attackman finished with four goals on five shots, including two man-up goals, three ground balls, and one caused turnover as the Panthers defeated Wilmington (19-15). Stewart then recorded a season-high six points on five goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls as Florida Tech nearly knocked off Tampa, falling to the Spartans 11-10 in double OT.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Matthew Beddow / University of Tampa / Jr. / LSM-Defense / San Diego, California
Beddow takes Defensive Player of the Week following his performances against No. 18 Lindenwood and No. 16 Florida Tech. The San Diego product tallied four caused turnovers and seven ground balls in the 11-8 Spartans’ victory over Lindenwood. In an 11-10 double OT win against Florida Tech, Beddow supplied the Spartans with five caused turnovers and five ground balls. The junior also found the back of the net once in two shots against the Panthers.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Noah McKoeun / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Jr. / Midfield / Kennesaw, Georgia
McKoeun is awarded Specialist of the Week for his performance in the X during PBA’s wins against Lincoln Memorial (10-3) and North Greenville (12-8). The Kennesaw, Georgia product won 9-of-15 faceoffs and tallied five groundballs against Lincoln Memorial. He followed with 12-of-20 faceoffs won and five ground balls against North Greenville.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Sydney Hill / Lynn University / So. / Attack / Mount Airy, Maryland
Hill records Offensive Player of the Week honors for her efforts in Lynn’s victories over Stonehill (21-16), Lander (18-11), and Davis and Elkins (21-1). The sophomore from Mount Airy, Maryland, had five points off four goals and an assist against Stonehill. She followed with six points from six goals against Lander. Lastly, she tallied seven points from a goal and six assists against Davis and Elkins. Hill also provided the Fighting Knights with four groundballs, a draw control, and a caused turnover this week. She scored her 11 goals on the week off 14 shots on goal and 14 total shots.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Elizabeth Ninesling / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Jr. / Midfield / Allentown, Pennsylvania
Ninesling receives Defensive Player of the Week following ERAU’s wins over Davis and Elkins (23-2) and North Greenville (20-5). The Allentown, Pennsylvania native tallied two caused turnovers and three ground balls against Davis and Elkins. She also provided the Eagles with three goals and six draw controls. Against North Greenville, Ninesling totaled two caused turnovers, two ground balls, two goals, and two assists. The weekly award is the second of her career.
Men's Golfer of the Week
Felipe Alvarez / Barry University / Sr. / Bogota, Colombia
Alvarez is named Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Panther Invitational in Melbourne, Florida. The Colombian battled down the stretch with teammate AJ Ewart for the individual trophy, finishing in a tie for first at 8-under. Ultimately, Alvarez prevailed in the sudden-death playoff between the two Buccaneers. The senior totaled rounds of 70, 68, and 70 and finished in first in birdies with 14. With the play of Alvarez, the top-ranked Barry Buccaneers finished off their performance at the Panther Invitational in dominant fashion, shooting a tournament-low 280 in the final round to win the tournament at 9-under.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Alice Gotbring / Barry University / Jr. / Vaxholm, Sweden
Gotbring earns Golfer of the Week for the second time in 2021-22 following her performance at the Fujikura Invite in San Marcos, California. The Swede finished second at 1-over following rounds of 72 and 73. Gotbring was second in Par-4 scoring and tied for sixth in Par-3 scoring at the event. With the play of Gotbring, Barry finished fourth of 19 teams with a score of 37-over. The weekly award is the fourth of her career.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Nicolas Bacella / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Venado Tuerto, Argentina
Bacella wins Athlete of the Week after a 6-0 record at second singles and third doubles against No. 20 UT Tyler, Ferris State, and Hillsdale College. Bacella started the week upsetting No. 11 Joaquin Blanchi (6-3, 6-0) of No. 20 UT Tyler. The senior from Argentina kept a clean slate, topping opponents on Wednesday and Sunday. In doubles action, he and partner Luis Iriarte put together three straight; 6-2 / 6-3 / 6-0.
Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Lavinia Lancellotti / Saint Leo University / So. / Rome, Italy
Lancellotti wins Athlete of the Week after an 8-0 record facing No. 13 Wingate, UT Tyler, Ferris State, and No. 27 Dallas Baptist University. The sophomore from Italy notched a win in third singles and three more in the fourth spot for the Lions. In doubles, she and partner Marta Vicens Miquel went 4-0 in the second flight.
Women's Rowing Boat of the Week
Varsity 4 / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University
Embry-Riddle’s Varsity 4 boat of Lauren Enders (coxswain), Alexandria Fife-Winslow, Gwendolyn Powell, Kristen Vigna, and Alexandra Weiler earns weekly honors following wins over Jacksonville and Stetson. The crew beat Jacksonville by over 10 seconds with a time of 7:53.2 and then defeated Stetson by 42 seconds with a time of 7:54.5 at DeLand Double Duals.
