SSC Athletes of the Week | February 21 - 27, 2022

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 21 - 27, 2022. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Jamison Evans / Lynn University / Jr. / Guard / Rutland, Vermont
Evans tied the SSC record for three-pointers made in a game to garner Player of the Week accolades. In the Fighting Knight's final game this season, Evan connected on 12 of 17 shots beyond the arch (71%) to push Lynn past Rollins, 93-70. Evan's 12 three's tie Simon Cumming's record, which stood alone since December 19, 2011. The Rutland, Vermont native also tallied 16 points, three rebounds, and two steals in a loss to No. 1 Nova Southeastern. Evans totaled 56 points by shooting 61% from the field (19-31), 64% from behind the arc (16-25), and 100% from the free-throw line (2-2).

Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

RJ Sunahara / Nova Southeastern University / So. / Forward / Bay Village, Ohio
Sunahara takes Defensive Player of the Week as NSU completes an undefeated season. The sophomore from Bay Village, Ohio, tallied two blocks, two steals, and three defensive rebounds as the Sharks defeated Lynn, 96-66, in Boca Raton. Sunahara followed with four blocks and seven defensive rebounds in a 94-85 win at Embry-Riddle. Offensively, the forward scored 26 points, distributed seven assists, and tallied three offensive rebounds. The weekly award is the fourth of his career.
 

Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Shekinah Guthrie / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Sr. / Forward / Atlanta, Georgia
Gurthie earns Player of the Week following her efforts in the PBA's final two games. The Atlanta native recorded a 20-point / 11-rebound double-double as PBA defeated Florida Tech, 71-59, in Melbourne. The senior forward then had a 21-point / 14-rebound double-double as PBA pushed No. 18 Tampa hard in a 66-61 home loss to end the season. Guthrie tallied 41 points by shooting 40% from the field (17-43) and 78% from the free-throw line (7-9). She averaged 20.5 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game while playing a total of 65 minutes.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Maya Price / Eckerd College / Jr. / Center / Bury St. Edmunds, England
Price is awarded Defensive Player of the Week as Eckerd ends the season with a pair of wins. The Briton tallied four steals, four blocks, and nine defensive rebounds as EC bested Barry 88-50 at home. Against Florida Tech on the road, Price blocked seven shots, grabbed seven defensive boards, and had one steal. Offensively, Price scored 25 points, dished five assists, and pulled in four offensive boards. The weekly award is the fifth of her career.

 
Baseball Player of the Week

JD Urso / University of Tampa / Fr. / Shortstop / Tampa, Florida
Urso captures Player of the Week after slashing .462/.467/1.077 as the Spartans went 4-0 last week. The freshman from Tampa went 6-for-13 at the plate, with three extra-base hits, two home runs, four runs scored, 11 runs batted in, and a base on balls. Urso began the week a modest 1-for-3 in a win against Flagler. Then against Florida Tech, he had a hit, run scored, and multiple runs batted in during each game of the three-game set. Defensively, the shortstop had seven putouts and seven assists in 14 chances.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Nathan Madej / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Lemont, Illinois
Madej's outing against conference foe Barry earns him Pitcher of the Week honors. The lefty went 5.0 innings with no runs allowed, one hit, and five walks to get the win. The Lemont, Illinois native, struck out six batters as the Mocassins secured the 5-1 road victory.
 

Softball Player of the Week

Skylar Redish / Eckerd College / So. / Catcher / Live Oak, Florida
Redish takes Player of the Week following her efforts in Eckerd's 4-1 week, including a two-game sweep of No. 4 North Georgia. The Live Oak, Florida, native went 5-for-11 at the plate, with four runs scored and four runs batted in as EC took both games against North Georgia. The sophomore was 3-for-7 with three walks and a hit by a pitch in EC's series win at Palm Beach Atlantic. Redish finished the week with a .333 batting average, a .455 on-base percentage, and a .667 slugging percentage.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Hannah Perkins / Eckerd College / Fr. / Fort Myers, Florida
Perkins went 3-0 on the week with a win over No. 4 North Georgia to receive SSC Pitcher of the Week honors. The Fort Myers, Florida product tossed 10 innings in Eckerd's 4-3 win over North Georgia. She struck out seven batters in the win while walking none, hitting two batters, and allowing three earned runs. Perkins also tossed two complete-game wins against PBA as EC took the series victory on the road two games to one. The freshman tossed 14 innings in those two appearances, allowing 11 hits, three runs (all earned), and four walks.


Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Jeff Atlas / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Attack / Islip, New York
Atlas repeats as Offensive Player of the Week following 10 points in a win against Flagler. The Islip, New York native, tallied six goals and four assists as FSC drubbed Flagler, 22-4, on the road. The junior attackman scored his six goals off six shots on goal and 10 total shots. Atlas also provided his team with two ground balls. The weekly award is the fourth of his career.

Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Justin Isenhour / Rollins College / Sr. / Defense / Orlando, Florida
Isenhour takes Defensive Player of the Week following his performance during a narrow win at Lynn. The senior from Orlando tallied four groundballs and three turnovers in the 14-13 Tars victory. Isenhour helped the Tars defense hold Lynn to 0-for-4 on extra-man opportunities.

Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week

Mark Ranieri / Rollins College / So. / FOS / Northport, New York
Ranieri is awarded Specialist of the Week for his performance in the X during Rollins' win against Lynn. Ranieri won 12 of 20 faceoffs and led the game with eight groundballs. Rollins defeated Lynn 14-13 in Boca Raton.
 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week

Charlotte Gastonguay / Rollins College / Fr. / Attack / Lewiston, Maine
Gastonguay led Rollins in wins at Lenoir-Rhyne (18-6) and No. 13 Limestone (12-7), garnering Offensive Player of the Week in the process. The Lewiston, Maine product opened the week with three goals off three shots and a groundball against Lenoir-Rhyne. Gastonguay then had four goals and a pair of assists in the victory at Limestone. She took just four shots to score her four goals in the win.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week

Aubrey Fixen / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Fr. / Goal / Palos Verdes, California
Fixen receives Defensive Player of the Week honors following her performance in a 14-10 win against Assumption. The freshman from Palos Verdes, California, tallied 14 saves and allowed 10 goals in the Eagles victory. Fixen posted a .583 save percentage while facing 24 shots on goal and 30 total shots. She also provided her team with a caused turnover in the win.


Men's Golfer of the Week

Alejandro Madariaga / Lynn University / Jr. / Puebla, Mexico
Madariaga is named Golfer of the Week for his performance at the Saint Leo Invitational in Dade City. The Puebla, Mexico native finished in a tied for the lead at 10-under at the end of stroke play but fell in a three-hole playoff. Madariaga bested a field of 97 other golfers and was the SSC's top finisher, following rounds of 72-67-67. With the play of Madariaga, Lynn took fourth of 17 teams at the event.

Women's Golfer of the Week


Francesca Santoni / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Torbole sul Garda, Italy
Santoni repeats as Golfer of the Week following her win at the Lady Moc Classic. The Italian bested a field of 94 golfers by three strokes and was the only golfer under par for the event. Santoni shot 3-under following three rounds of 71. The weekly award is the third of her career.

 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Arnau Rodriguez / Barry University / Fr. / L'Ametlla del Vallès, Spain
Rodriguez takes Athlete of the Week honors following his play at #1 Doubles and #6 Singles against No. 7 Embry-Riddle. Paired with Alejandro Gallego, Rodriguez posted a 7-6 win over ERAU's #2 tandem. At #6 singles, the Spaniard won 6-2, 6-2. Additionally, against Rollins, Rodriguez won at #1 singles, 6-4, and #5 doubles 6-0, 6-2.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week


Daniela Farfan / Barry University / Sr. / Buenos Aries, Argentina
Farfan is named Athlete of the Week following her play in the first two rounds of the ITA Indoor Championships. In a 4-0 win against No. 9 Flagler, Farfan, and partner Kim Moosbacher, won 6-3 at #3 doubles. She was also victorious at #6 singles 6-1, 6-0. In a semifinal victory against No. 6 West Alabama, Farfan and Moosbacher won 6-4 at #3 doubles. The Argentinian then won 6-1, 6-2 at #6 singles.
