SSC Athletes of the Week | February 14 - 20, 2022
Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 14 - 20, 2022. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.
Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Elijah Jenkins / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / Guard / Atlanta, Georgia
Jenkins earns Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after helping ERAU secure the #2 seed in the SSC tournament. The Atlanta native began the week with a game-high 28 points in an 88-73 win over Eckerd. He followed with a game-high 22 points as ERAU claimed an 82-72 victory at No. 25 Barry. Jenkins scored his 50 points by shooting 62% from the field (18-29), 100% from the free-throw line (4-4), and 53% from behind the arc (10-19). He also provided the Eagles with four steals, six rebounds, and six assists in his 70 minutes. The weekly award is the third of his career.
Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Romeo Crouch / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / Guard / Titusville, Florida
Crouch is named Defensive Player of the Week after his efforts in the backcourt helped ERAU secure the #2 seed in the SSC tournament. The Titusville, Florida product registered six defensive rebounds, four steals, and a block in an 88-73 win over Eckerd. In an 82-72 win at No. 25 Barry, the senior had six defensive rebounds, a block, and a steal. Offensively, Crouch scored 37 points, dished out 12 assists, and pulled down five offensive rebounds. The weekly award is the seventh of his career.
Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Whitney Jacob / Florida Southern College / Gr. / Forward / Parker, Colorado
Jacob takes Player of the Week honors for the fourth time this season, following her play in two overtime SSC contests last week. The Parker, Colorado native, tallied a game-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds as FSC defeated Saint Leo, 78-76, on the road in OT. Jacob then recorded team-highs of 18 points and seven rebounds in the Moccasins' 61-54 OT win against No. 12 Eckerd. Last week, the forward totaled 41 points by shooting 47% from the field (14-30), 40% from behind the arc (2-5), and 85% from the line (11-13). Jacob averaged 20.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 1.0 steals while playing 80 total minutes.
Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Dani Lozzi / Lynn University / Sr. / Guard / Horsham, United Kingdom
Lozzi takes Defensive Player of the Week after leading Lynn in SSC wins over Palm Beach Atlantic and Saint Leo. The Horsham, United Kingdom native, tallied six steals and six defensive rebounds in Lynn's 64-48 win at PBA. On the road, Lozzi then registered four steals and five defensive rebounds as the Fighting Knights bested Saint Leo, 81-54. Offensively, the senior guard scored 18 points and issued eight assists. The weekly award is the third of her career.
Baseball Player of the Week
Nick Santucci / Rollins College / Gr. / Outfield / Franklin, Massachusetts
Santucci's play in a three-game series sweep of Embry-Riddle earns him Player of the Week honors. The outfielder recorded a .308/.308/.769 slash line and reached base with four hits in 13 at-bats, including two home runs. Santucci accounted for seven Tars runs, driving in four and scoring three times. Defensively, the Franklin, Massachusetts native had four putouts in four chances.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Justin Alintoff / Rollins College / Sr. / Jupiter, Florida
Alintoff is donned Pitcher of the Week following eight innings of work against Embry-Riddle. The Jupiter, Florida native faced 27 Eagles, allowing three hits and no runs as the Tars secured a 4-0 win. Alintoff struck out 10 batters while walking none in his second win of the season.
Softball Player of the Week
Janie McCloskey / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Sr. / Outfield / Atlanta, Georgia
McCloskey is honored as Player of the Week for her efforts in a three-game sweep of Lynn. The outfielder from Atlanta went 5-for-12 (.417) at the plate with a home run and a double. She slugged .750, scoring four times and driving in six baserunners. McCloskey drew two walks and finished the week with a .500 on-base average.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Alex Hendrian / Florida Tech / Fr. / Aurora, Colorado
Hendrian is tabbed Pitcher of the Week following no earned runs in 14.1 innings of work against Barry. The Aurora, Colorado native started a narrow game 1 loss (1-0), tossing six innings, allowing three hits and a run while walking three and striking out three. Hendrian earned the save in Game 2 (5-3), pitching 1.2 innings allowing one hit in 29 pitches. In the series finale win, she tossed a complete-game shutout. Allowing only two hits and one walk on two strikeouts.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Jeff Atlas / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Attack / Islip, New York
Atlas garners Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. The Islip, New York native, opened the week with two goals and seven assists in a road win against Belmont Abbey (21-13). His nine points and seven assists were game-highs. In a narrow road loss to No. 10 Limestone (12-11), Atlas scored a game-high three goals and added an assist for a game-high four points. The junior attackman totaled five goals this week off nine shots on goal and 10 total shots. He also provided his team with two ground balls and a caused turnover.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Blake Ulmer / University of Tampa / Jr. / Goal / Naples, Florida
Ulmer is named Defensive Player of the Week for a third consecutive week for his performance in a neutral site win over No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne. The junior from Naples, Florida, totaled 11 saves and allowed eight goals during 60 minutes in net as the Spartans recorded the 13-8 victory. Ulmer tallied a .579 save percentage while facing 19 shots on goal and 42 total shots. The weekly award is the seventh of his career.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Michael Flores / Saint Leo University / So. / FOS / Apopka, Florida
Flores grabs Specialist of the Week for his performance in the X against Montevallo and Alabama-Huntsville. The Apopka, Florida product won 23 of 30 faceoffs and picked up 12 ground balls in SLU's 19-11 win over Montevallo. Against UAH, Flores took 19 of 32 faceoffs and picked up 15 ground balls as the Lions won 16-14 at home.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Murphy McDonough / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Jr. / Attack / Norwell, Massachusetts
McDonough led Embry-Riddle to a 21-10 road win over Young Harris to claim Offensive Player of the Week. The junior from Norwell, Massachusetts, had game-highs in goals (7), assists (3), and points (10) in the victory. She scored her seven goals off nine shots on goal and 11 total shots.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Dani Waters / University of Tampa / Sr. / Defense / Smithtown, New York
Waters receives Defensive Player of the Week honors following her performance in a loss to Grand Valley State (16-5). The senior from Smithtown, New York, tallied three caused turnovers in the contest. She also provided her team with two ground balls.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Lucca Baptista / Lynn University / Sr. / Porto Alegre, Brazil
Baptista is awarded Athlete of the Week honors following Lynn's upset of No. 1 Barry. Along with teammate Diego Gonzalez, the Brazillian helped the Fighting Knights to the double point with a 6-3 win over Barry's #1 duo. At #2 singles, Baptista defeated No. 3 Alejandro Gallego 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, to secure the 4-3 Lynn win.
Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Zala Dovnik / Nova Southeastern University / Gr. / Maribor, Slovenia
Dovnik earns Athlete of the Week following a perfect 4-0 week in road wins at No. 10 Lynn and Eckerd. Competing at No. 1 doubles, Dovnik teamed up with Julie Razafindranaly for 6-3 and 6-0 doubles victories. Playing at #3 singles against Lynn, she earned a 6-1, 6-4 win before collecting an unblemished, 6-0, 6-0 win at #2 singles versus Eckerd. Dovnik is a combined 5-0 in singles this season.
