MELBOURNE, Fla. - Barry University tennis athlete Alessandro Giuliato has been named the 2020-21 Sunshine State Conference Male Athlete of the Year. Giuliato finished 2020-21 as a National Champion, and the No. 1 ranked singles player in NCAA Division II by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Voting for the award is conducted among Athletic Directors, Senior Woman Administrators, Athletic Communication Directors, and Faculty Athletic Representatives from each of the 11 SSC member institutions.
Giuliato, a product of South Maurizio, Italy, recorded an 11-1 record at #1 singles which included 10 matches against nationally-ranked opponents. He finished 10-0 at #2 doubles with a pair of doubles partners this past season. Giuliato was tabbed a singles All-American by the ITA following his #1 ranking. He also earned a #19 ranking from the ITA in doubles with partner Tim Buettner. The junior was selected First Team All-SSC in singles and in doubles, with partner Hugo Cazaban.
The Buccaneers finished the season 13-0 overall and 6-0 in league play, thanks largely to the contributions of Giuliato. Barry captured its fifth NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis national championship (second consecutive) and a 16th SSC tournament title. Currently pursuing a degree in Management, Giuliato was named to Barry’s Dean’s List in Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 and the SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll in Spring 2021.
Giuliato becomes the second Barry student-athlete to be honored as SSC Male Athlete of the Year, joining 2005-06 winner Thomas Hipp (tennis). Giuliato and Hipp are the only two tennis student-athletes to win SSC Male Athlete of the Year since the award was established in 1987-88.
