SSC Athletes of the Week | March 8 - 14, 2021

Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 8 - 14, 2021. Athletes are nominated by Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions.

Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Sesan Russell / Florida Tech / Jr. / Guard / London, England
Russell averaged a triple-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, and three steals per game to repeat as Player of the Week. In the Panthers' 79-75 win over Florida Southern on Wednesday, the junior finished one assist shy of a triple-double with 21 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists, and four steals while playing all 40 minutes. The Briton then recorded his first career triple-double, with 25 points, 11 assists, and 10 rebounds. All three were game-highs as the Panthers defeated Tampa 86-77 on Saturday. Russell is the first Panther to record a triple-double since Corbin Jackson did so on December 20, 2013. Russell scored his 46 points by shooting 44% from the field (16-36), 29% from behind the arc (5-17), and 64% from the free-throw line (9-14).
 


Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Jalyn Hinton / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Forward / Boston, Massachusetts
Hinton earns his second consecutive Defensive Player of the Week honor, third overall, this season following 17 blocks and 21 defensive rebounds across three games. Hinton averaged 19.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 5.7 blocks per game as Florida Southern finished 2-1 last week. The Bostonian's best game came against Barry, where he recorded a triple-double with 21 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 blocked shots. The weekly award is the seventh in Hinton's career, which ties him for fourth all-time in SSC men's basketball.
 

Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Terri Battle / University of Tampa / Center / Sr. / Chicago, Illinois
Battle closed out Tampa's 2020-21 season with 20 points and 12 rebounds against Florida Tech. The Chicago native poured in a game-high 20 points by shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-8 from the line. Battle tallied nine defensive and three offensive rebounds, totaling a game-high 12 boards. She also provided the Spartans with three assists in the win.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Ashley Shell / Florida Southern College / Forward / Jr. / Deerfield Beach, Florida
Shell's efforts on the defensive end aided FSC in closing out the year with a pair of wins. Against Florida Tech, she pulled in five defensive rebounds and recorded three steals. The Deerfield Beach, Florida native followed with seven defensive rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots against Barry.
 

Baseball Player of the Week

John Malcom / University of Tampa / First Base / So. / Detroit, Michigan
Malcom earns his second Player of the Week honor after driving in eight runs in a series sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic. Along with his eight RBI, Malcom went 5-for-10 at the plate with a double, four walks, and three runs scored. Malcolm showed his plate discipline in game three with a hit, three RBI, three walks, and no strikeouts. The Detroit product recorded a .500 batting average, .643 on-base percentage, and .600 slugging percentage across three games. Defensively, the first baseman had 13 putouts and an assist on 14 chances.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week

Michael Paul / University of Tampa / Jr. / Clearwater, Florida
Paul opened the series against Palm Beach Atlantic with a scoreless effort and a victory to garner Pitcher of the Week. The Clearwater, Florida native tossed five innings of no-hit ball to start the game. He finished with four strikeouts while allowing just two hits in the combined shutout.
 

Softball Player of the Week

Kacie Kelly / Saint Leo University / Second Base / Gr. / Jacksonville, Florida
Kelly earns her fifth career Player of the Week award after recording a .500/.571/.750 slash line in a series win against Florida Southern. The Jacksonville, Florida product went 6-for-12 at the plate with two extra-base hits, three runs batted in, a walk, a hit by pitch, and a run scored. Kelly reached base in all four games and led her team in runs batted in as the Lions took three of four from the Moccasins.

Softball Pitcher of the Week

Ali Shenefield / Rollins College / Fr. / Brooksville, Florida
Shenefield tossed two complete-game shutouts against Barry last week to earn Pitcher of the Week. In her first appearance of the year, she struck out eight batters while allowing six hits and a walk in seven innings. The Brooksville, Florida, native followed with six strikeouts, three hits allowed, and issued a walk in seven innings of work. The Tars won the contests 4-0 and 1-0, respectively, as Shenefield tallied a 0.00 ERA, 0.71 WHIP, and .188 BAA. The weekly award is the second of her career.
 

Men's Golfer of the Week

AJ Ewart / Barry University / So. / Coquitlam, British Columbia
Ewart finished in a tie for second at the Matlock Collegiate Classic to win Golfer of the Week honors. The Canadian finished 1-under by shooting 72/68/75 in his three rounds. Ewart ended the tournament second in birdies and recorded an eagle in his second round. He led Barry to a fourth-place team finish at the event. The weekly award is the third of his career.
 

Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Alessandro Giuliato / Barry University / Jr. / South Maurizio, Italy
Giuliato opened the season with singles and doubles victories against Embry-Riddle to grab weekly honors. The Italian began 2021 with a win over ERAU's #2 doubles squad, 6-1, with partner Hugo Cazaban. Giuliato then defeated ERAU's Juan Ortiz Couder, 6-2 6-2, at #1 singles. With the play of Giuliato, the Buccaneers earned a 6-1 victory over the Eagles.

Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week

Minnie Kim / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Montreal, Quebec
Kim is named Athlete of the Week following her play in FSC's two wins last week. The Canadian began the season with a 6-4 victory against Eckerd's #2 doubles team along with partner Laura Vetter. Kim went on to win, 6-2 6-2, at #1 singles as the Moccasins swept the Tritons. Kim and Vetter followed up with a 7-5 victory at #2 doubles against Palm Beach Atlantic. The junior went on to win, 7-6 6-2, at #1 singles, helping the Moccasins sweep the Sailfish.
