SSC Athletes of the Week | March 15 - 21, 2021
Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of March 15 - 21, 2021. Athletes are nominated by Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions.
Baseball Player of the Week
EJ Cumbo / University of Tampa / Outfield / So. / East Meadow, New York
Cumbo led his team in hitting with a .538/.528/.923 slash line as Spartans picked up a sweep of Florida Tech. The East Meadow, New York product also had team bests in runs (3), hits (7), doubles (2), home runs (1), RBI (3), and stolen bases (1). At Florida Tech on Friday, Cumbo went 4-for-5 at the plate, driving in two runs and scoring another. The outfielder added a pair of hits, including a double, in the game one victory. Cumbo launched a sixth-inning home run to break a scoreless tie in the series finale and seal the UT victory as the game's lone run.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Jaylyn Whitehead / Rollins College / Sr. / Orlando, Florida
Whitehead garners Pitcher of the Week following his performance in game two of a doubleheader against Lynn this past Sunday. The Orlando native faced the minimum of 18 batters across six shutout innings. He gave up a single in the top of the second and turned a double play on the next batter. Whitehead retired the last 14 batters he faced, including striking out the side in his final frame. The senior finished with seven strikeouts and his victory moved Rollins to 3-1 in SSC play.
Softball Player of the Week
Chelsea Peace / Rollins College / Infield / Jr. / Orlando, Florida
Peace takes Player of the Week honors following a .545/.643/1.455 slash line in a series sweep of Lynn. The Orlando product went 6-for-11 at the plate with four extra-base hits, nine runs batted in, four runs scored, three walks, and a stolen base. Peace knocked in multiple runs, scored, and recorded an extra-base hit in every game. In the series finale, Peace went 1-for-2 with a double, run scored, three RBI, and two walks. Her run scored earned Rollins the 5-4 walk-off victory.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Abbey Busby / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Sr. / Raymond, Mississippi
Busby earns her second Pitcher of the Week honor this season after tossing 14 scoreless innings against No. 11 Saint Leo. The Raymond, Mississippi native allowed five hits, four walks, and hit two batters in the contests. Busby struck out 17 across her two victories last week and held opposing batters to a .160 average. The weekly award is the fifth of her career.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Jack Wood / University of Tampa / So. / Attack / Duxbury, Massachusetts
Wood played a well-rounded game in Tampa's 24-8 win at Saint Leo to earn Offensive Player of the Week. The Duxbury, Massachusetts product tallied seven points for the Spartans off five assists and two goals. Wood connected on his two scores following five shots, three of which were on goal. The sophomore also picked up five ground balls in the victory. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Mikey Troese / Lynn University / Jr. / LSM / Annapolis, Maryland
Troese is selected Defensive Player of the Week for his effort in Lynn's 19-5 win over Palm Beach Atlantic. The Annapolis, Maryland product caused a game-high seven turnovers in the victory. Troese also finished second with seven ground balls
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Ross Dickerson / University of Tampa / Sr. / FO / Berlin, Maryland
Dickerson earns his 11th career weekly award following a 19-for-21 performance at the X against Saint Leo. The Berlin, Maryland product went on to pick up 14 ground balls in the 24-8 Spartan victory. Dickerson also provided UT with three goals, all unassisted. The senior is tied for fifth all-time among Tampa's weekly award winners. He remains third among men's lacrosse athletes.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Marina Jozokos / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Attack-Midfield / Wolfeboro, New Hampshire
In the season-opening 17-3 win over Florida Tech, Jozokos recorded four goals and two assists to lead all scorers while taking just five shots. The Wolfeboro, New Hampshire native recorded the second and third goals for the Moccasins and assisted on the fourth and fifth goals, including the game-winner. She converted her only free position shot attempt. The weekly award is the second of her career.
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Brittany Iamele / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Goal / Sound Beach, New York
Iamele is tabbed Defensive Player of the Week following her performance in the season-opening 17-3 win over Florida Tech. The Sound Beach, New York product faced 16 shots and made seven saves while allowing three goals. With the win, Iamele moves to 8-0 in her career with FSC. The weekly award is the second of her career.
Men's Golfer of the Week
AJ Ewart / Barry University / So. / Coquitlam, British Columbia
Ewart repeats are Golfer of the Week by placing second at 6-under in the Southeastern Intercollegiate. Ewart finished one stroke behind the individual winner Beck Burnette of Lee University. The Canadian started the tournament with a 75 in the opening round, followed by a sizzling 63. In the final round, he shot an even-par 72. Ewart's 63 is the second-lowest round in tournament history. The weekly award is the fourth of his career.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Kiira Riihijarvi / University of Tampa / Sr. / Oulu, Finland
Riihijarvi won her first individual championship of the season and 11th career medalist award at the Peggy Kirk Bell Memorial Invitational. The Finn captured the championship by two strokes after carding rounds of 74 and 73 to start the event. Riihijarvi helped the team to a fourth-place finish while winning her second straight individual title at the PKB Invite after winning in 2020. The weekly award is the fourth of her career.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Aurel Ciocanu / Saint Leo University / Sr. / Montreal, Quebec
Ciocanu helped the Lions to a 2-0 start featuring a pair of clean sweeps. The senior from Montreal, Quebec, went 2-0 in doubles with partner Willem van den Akker and 2-0 in third singles. Against Eckerd, Ciocanu and van den Akker captured a 6-1 first doubles result. Ciocanu went on to defeat his third singles opponent 6-1, 6-2. The strong start continued at No. 12 Florida Southern on Saturday. The duo posted a 6-2 win at second doubles followed by a 6-3, 6-3 finale in third singles. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Julie Razafindranaly / Barry University / Sr. / Rosnoen, France
Razafindranaly is named Athlete of the Week following her play in Barry's 6-1 victory at Rollins. The Rosnoen, France product in tandem with Jil Engelmann won 6-1 against Rollins' #2 doubles duo. Razafindranaly went on to win at #2 singles 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to grab her first career weekly award.
Rowing Boat of the Week
Varsity 4+ / Florida Tech
Florida Tech’s V4+ boat of Sophia Ferrizzi (bow), Lotti Lutter, Maggie Eure, Rebecca Miller (stroke) and Nashaita Patrawalla (coxswain) earns weekly awards following a win over Barry. The crew opened their season with a time of 8:18.9, while second-placed Barry did not finish until almost a minute later at 9:11.2.
