Weekly Honors in Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, Golf, and Swimming

SSC Athletes of the Week | November 1 - 7, 2021

Sunshine State Conference Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of November 1 - 7, 2021. Athletic Communication Directors of member institutions nominate athletes.

Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week

Jazz Schmidt / Palm Beach Atlantic University / RS / Sr. / Parker, Colorado
Schmidt is awarded Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading PBA in two key wins. The Parker, Colorado native, started the week with a 13-kill / 21-assist performance, hitting .273 in a 3-1 win against No. 17 Nova Southeastern. Schmidt followed with a triple-double in a win against Florida Southern, tying a career-high of 20 kills and hitting .571 in four sets against the Moccasins. The senior finished the week with another triple-double against No. 9 Tampa. She hit .351 on the week while averaging 3.75 kills, 4.1 assists, and 3.41 digs per set.

Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week

Sam Lanning / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Jr. / MB / Norcross, Georgia
Lanning tallied 15 total blocks (2.1 per set), 14 kills, and a .357 hitting percentage as ERAU claimed two conference victories last week. In a 3-0 win against Barry, she posted a match-high seven blocks and added six kills while hitting .455. The Norcross, Georgia product followed up with eight blocks (two solo) and eight kills while hitting .294 in a 3-1 upset of No. 17 Nova Southeastern.

Volleyball Setter of the Week

Krysten Garrison / Eckerd College / Jr. / Piedmont, Missouri
Garrison collects Setter of the Week for the second time this season after running the Eckerd offense with 104 assists (11.6 per set) over three conference matches. The Piedmont, Missouri native accumulated 28 assists to go along with three kills and nine digs in a three-set loss at Saint Leo to start the week. Garrison went on to post a match-high 43 assists in addition to two kills and five digs in a 3-0 win against Barry. The junior capped the week with 44 assists over three sets versus Florida Tech, the most assists in three sets by a Triton since 2007.
 

Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Tino Miguez / Nova Southeastern University / Gr. / Forward / Santiago de Compostela, Spain
Miguez provided late-game heroics for a Sharks on his way to Offensive Player of the Week. The Spaniard notched the game-winning goal in the 85th minute to push NSU past Rollins in the regular-season finale. The victory helped the Sharks lock up the No. 4 seed in the SSC Tournament, securing a home match in the quarterfinal round.

Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

Alberto Ciroi / Nova Southeastern University / Gr. / Goalkeeper / Udine, Italy
Ciroi earns Defensive Player of the Week for the second time in 2021 for a clean sheet against Rollins. The Italian spearheaded an NSU defensive performance in which the Sharks blanked Rollins en route to a 1-0 win to lock up the No. 4 seed in the SSC Tournament. Ciroi collected three saves as the Sharks limited the Tars to just seven shots overall. The shutout marked his fourth solo shutout of the season.
 

Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week

Chama Silva / Nova Southeastern University / So. / Forward / Caracas, Venezuela
Silva is awarded Offensive Player of the Week for effort in NSU's 3-2 road win against Rollins. The Venezuelan recorded an assist and a goal in a span early in the first half, giving NSU a 2-0 advantage. With the play of Silva, the Sharks defeated Rollins 3-2 and clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming SSC Tournament.

Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

Madison Chiola / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Sr. / Goalkeeper / Hammonton, New Jersey
Chiola receives Defensive Player of the Week honors following a clean sheet against Barry last week. The Hammonton, New Jersey product recorded five saves and her second shutout of the season. With the play of Chiola, PBA won the game 2-0 and clinched the program's first appearance in the SSC tournament. The weekly award is the second of her career.
 

Men's Basketball Player of the Week

Elijah Jenkins / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / Guard / Atlanta, Georgia
Jenkins earns Player of the Week honors after leading ERAU to a pair of victories at the Small College Basketball National Hall of Fame Classic. The Atlanta native started the event with 18 points in an 83-77 win over Missouri Western. He followed with a program-record 44 points as ERAU claimed a 103-96 win against No. 20 Alabama - Huntsville. Jenkins scored his 62 points by shooting 50% from the field (18-36), 100% from the free-throw line (13-13), and 52% from behind the arc (13-25). The senior played 73 of his team's minutes on the way to SCB Hall of Fame Classic MVP honors. Jenkins' 44 points and 11 3FG made against UAH place him tied for 11th and 2nd, respectively, in SSC single-game performances. The weekly award is the second of his career.

Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Romeo Crouch / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Sr. / Guard / Titusville, Florida
Crouch is named Defensive Player of the Week after shutting down the backcourts of Missouri Western and Alabama - Huntsville at the Small College Basketball National Hall of Fame Classic. The Titusville, Florida product registered five defensive rebounds, a block, and a steal in an 83-77 win over Missouri Western. In a 103-96 win against No. 20 UAH, the senior had four defensive rebounds and a steal. Crouch scored 30 points on the week while averaging 6.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals, and .5 blocks per game. The weekly award is the fourth of his career.
 

Women's Basketball Player of the Week

Melijah Sullivan / University of Tampa / Forward / Jr. / Bartow, Florida
Sullivan grabs Player of the Week accolades after her D2CCA Tip-off Classic All-Tournament Team performance last week. The Bartow, Florida averaged 16.67 points and 5.00 rebounds across three games. Sullivan scored 50 points by shooting 49% from the field (22-45) and 86% from the free-throw line (6-7). In her 86 minutes on the court, she recorded 15 rebounds, seven assists, and two blocks. The weekly award is the third of her career.

Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week

Grace Gilmore / Nova Southeastern University / Guard / Gr. / Hartland, Wisconsin
Gilmore is named Defensive Player of the Week thanks to her performance at the D2CCA Tip-off Classic. The Hartland, Wisconsin native, tallied seven steals, six defensive rebounds, and a block as NSU went 2-1 at the event. Gilmore also provided the Sharks with 32 points and 11 total rebounds.
 

Men's Golfer of the Week

Javier Calles / Nova Southeastern University / So. / Madrid, Spain
Calles repeats as Golfer of the Week following back-to-back career wins. The Spaniard shot an 8-under, 208 to defeat the field at the 2021 McDonough Cup. Calles' first-round score of 65 was the lowest at the event and saw the majority of his 11 birdies. NSU claimed its second straight team win on the back of the Sophomore's strong performance.
 

Men's Swimmer of the Week

Szymon Leszega / Saint Leo University / So. / Gdynia, Poland
Leszega led the Lions against Rollins, 132-130, to claim Swimmer of the Week accolades. The Gdynia, Poland native, took home gold in the 50 Free in 21.82 and 100 Free in 46.74. He also took part in the winning 400 Medley and 200 Freestyle Relays. Leszega and his teammates won the 400 Medley Relay in 3:34.75 before claiming the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:26.20.

Women's Swimmer of the Week

Olivia Miles / Florida Southern College / Fr. / Margate, England
Miles takes Swimmer of the Week for her performance against Indian River State College last week. The Margate, England product won the 1650 Free and 400 IM in the meet. Her 400 IM time of 4:33.73 is good for the seventh-best time in school history, while her 1650 Free time of 17:32.88 stands second in NCAA Division II this season, sixth all-time in FSC history.
