FSC's Hanson, NSU's Matthews Earn Men's Basketball All-America Awards
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) recognizes Florida Southern College's Brett Hanson and Nova Southeastern University's Mark Matthews as All-Americans.
Hanson, a 6-2 guard from Manchester, New Hampshire, averaged 22.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game for a Moccasin team that ended the year 29-2. Hanson was also named the D2CCA Player of the Year, Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, and the SSC tournament Most Valuable Player. For his career, Hanson scored 2,238 points, making him only the third player in school history to reach the 2,000 point threshold. Hanson shot nearly 50 percent from the field, scoring in double-figures in all 31 games this year, including 19 games with at least 20 points, and a career-high 42 points in a win over Lindenwood on December 7. Additionally, he has collected 844 total rebounds, dished 439 assists, and grabbed 216 steals, all in the top ten in Florida Southern College history. Hanson is one of 25 finalists for the Bevo Francis Award as the top non-Division I men's basketball player in the country.
Matthews, a 6-6 guard/forward from Bonita Springs, Florida, repeats as an All-American after earning D2CCA accolades last season. The senior led the nation's second-ranked scoring offense (101.8 ppg) with 22.0 points per game to go along with 7.1 rebounds per game and 5.2 assists per game in 29 starts. Matthews posted each of the program's two highest single-game point totals this winter, pouring in a career-high 45 points against Palm Beach Atlantic on January 15 before delivering a 42-point performance in the Sunshine State Conference Tournament final versus No. 5 Florida Southern. In just two seasons with the Sharks, Matthews finishes his career among the program's Top-10 in points (1,317), rebounds (522), and assists (269). Matthews is one of 25 finalists for the Bevo Francis Award as the top non-Division I men's basketball player in the country.
