Men's Basketball Player of the Week
Brett Hanson / Florida Southern College / Sr. / Guard / Manchester, New Hampshire
Hanson earns Player of the Week honors for the second time this season by leading FSC to a pair of victories last week. Hanson began the week with 13 points and six rebounds to go along with a game-high eight assists in an 86-76 conference victory over Saint Leo University. He followed with a career and game-high 42 points in a 98-96 overtime win against Lindenwood University. The senior tallied 30 of his points in the second half/overtime, helping the Moccasins erase a double-digit deficit. The single-game scoring performance is tied for fifth-best in program history and is tied for the fourth-highest total in Division II this season. Hanson scored his 55 points by shooting 48% from the field (20-42), 81% from the free-throw line (13-16), and 25% from behind the arc (2-8). The senior played in 92% (78) of his team's minutes, where he recorded 14 rebounds, 13 assists, and two steals. The weekly award is the seventh of his career.
Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Jalyn Hinton / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Forward / Boston, Massachusetts
Hinton is awarded Defensive Player of the Week honors following FSC's wins against Saint Leo University and Lindenwood University. The Boston native tied a season-high with seven blocks in an 86-76 conference victory over Saint Leo. During a 98-96 overtime win against Lindenwood, Hinton pulled in nine defensive rebounds and tallied four blocks as well as a steal off the bench. Offensively, the junior scored 11 points on the week, including game-tying free throws with 1.1 seconds left against Lindenwood to send the game to overtime. Hinton's 4.67 blocks per game rank first in NCAA Division II and second among all levels of NCAA basketball.
Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Kris Nelson / University of Tampa / Guard / Sr. / Augusta, Georgia
Nelson takes Player of the Week accolades following a pair of SSC wins. The Augusta, Georgia product opened the week with a team-high 17 points and a game-high five assists during a 57-54 win at Eckerd College. Nelson scored 14 points in the second half, sparking a fourth-quarter comeback to keep the Spartans on top of the league standings. The senior then scored 14 points and dished a game-high five assists as Tampa handed Rollins an 85-60 defeat. Nelson scored her 31 points by shooting 63% from the field (10-16), 71% from the free-throw line (5-7), and 67% from behind the arc (6-9). In her 71 minutes on the court, she recorded 10 assists, four rebounds, and a steal.
Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Dori Nagy / University of Tampa / Forward / Jr. / Pecs, Hungary
Nagy is awarded Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts in Tampa's two conference wins last week. The Hungarian tallied three steals in UT's 57-54 win at Eckerd College, with two coming in the fourth quarter as the Spartans mounted their double-digit comeback. Nagy followed with a 15-point / 14-rebound (12 defensive) effort as the Spartans downed Rollins 85-60 in Tampa. With the play of Nagy, UT held Eckerd and Rollins to 18.5 and 8.0 points under their season scoring averages, respectively.
Women's Swimmer of the Week
Samantha Beck / Lynn University / Fr. / Sparks, Nevada
Beck's performance at the 2019 Savannah College of Art & Design Invitational has earned her Swimmer of the Week. The Sparks, Nevada native secured NCAA "B" qualifying marks and first-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:05.19), 400 IM (4:24.33), and the 200 Breast (2:19.42). Beck also won the 100 Breast (1:04.16) and led the Fighting Knights to relay wins in the 400 and 800 Free.
