Lynn's expansion brings SSC women's lacrosse total to eight teams

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Lynn University Director of Athletics Devin Crosby today announced the addition of women's lacrosse as the school's 19th NCAA Division II athletic program.  This is the eighth sport added since 2012 and fourth in the 2017-18 academic year, bringing the Fighting Knights to nine men's and 10 women's NCAA sponsored varsity sports.

"We feel women's lacrosse is fitting for Lynn University as the sport has experienced considerable national growth through the years," said Crosby, who has overseen the expansion of five sports since becoming director of athletics in 2015.  "Our men's lacrosse team has enjoyed success since starting in 2014, and I look forward to watching our women's program grow in a similar fashion."

Longtime university supporter Mary Ann Perper donated a second locker room for Bobby Campbell Stadium where the team will train and compete. Construction will begin this summer and is set to be completed by early 2019.

"This wouldn't have been possible without Mrs. Perper's continued generosity," said Greg Malfitano, Lynn's senior vice president for advancement. "From the coffeehouse to the residence halls, her contributions enhance the Lynn experience and help make campus feel like home."

The women's lacrosse program is slated to begin NCAA competition for the 2019-20 championship season.  A national search is underway to identify a head coach.

"It is important we identify a leader that enjoys mentoring young people while reflecting the personal attributes of Spirit, Service, and Strength," Crosby added.

Women's lacrosse will compete as an NCAA Division II program and as a member of the Sunshine State Conference.  Currently, 114 Division II schools offer varsity women's lacrosse, and Lynn will be the eighth school in the Sunshine State Conference to sponsor this program, joining Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Florida Southern College, Florida Tech, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Rollins College, Saint Leo University, and the University of Tampa.

Lynn has added men's cross country, men's track and men's swimming already in 2017-18.  Also, women's cross country and track, men's lacrosse and women's swimming have been added since 2012.
