RECAP: 2015 SSC Swimming Championships Day Four

ORLANDO, Fla. – The 2015 Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships have come to a close with Nova Southeastern and Florida Southern earning team championships. Just like the previous three days, Sunday was full of record-breaking action. Four SSC records and eight Championship records fell in the final day.

 

At the end of the day, the final standings have been calculated, and Florida Southern walks out a SSC Champion in Men’s Swimming. FSC totaled 800 points during the four days of action. The Moccassins edged out Nova Southeastern, who finished in second with 791 points. Finishing third in the Men’s standings was Tampa with 740 points.

 

The 205 Women’s SSC Champion is Nova Southeastern, who tallied 853.5 points overall. NSU maintained their day three lead and road it to victory. Florida Southern finished in second place by recording 760.5 points. The third place finisher on the women’s side was Tampa with 712 points.

 

The Swimmers of the meet were Daniel Bis of Saint Leo, and Rebecca Matthews of Lynn. Below is a brief overview of the day’s action.

 

The performances from today bring the aggregate totals to 20 SSC and 29 meet records that have been broken in the four days of action. Anton Lobanov of Nova Southeastern set two NCAA DII records. Lobantov set records in the Men’s 100 Breaststroke (Saturday) and 200 Breaststroke (Sunday). He posted a time of 52 seconds flat in the 100 and a time of 1:53.49 in the 200.

Day four Preliminaries

Records broken:

Bryndis Hansen of Nova Southeastern started the final day with a new SSC Championship record in the Women’s 100 Freestyle. Hansen put up a time of 49.65. Following Hansen’s performance fellow Shark Thiago Sickert bested his previous SSC overall record time in the Men’s 100 Freestyle and set the new record at 43.53.

Day four Finals

Records broken:

Daniel Bis of Saint Leo started the finals in dramatic fashion by setting a new SSC Championship record in the Men’s 1650 Freestyle with time of 15:26.72. The first of many Sharks to break records in the finals was Bryndis Hansen. Hansen set a new SSC Championship record in Women’s 100 Freestyle with a time of 49.28. Thiago Sickert of NSU bests his time he set in prelims with 43.48 performance in the Men’s 100 Freestyle final. Nova Southeastern’s Courtney DeVeny set a new SSC Championship record in the Women’s 200 Backstroke by posting a new time of 1:57.18. She dethrones Mary O’Sullivan of Florida Southern who set the record in 2011.

Once again Lynn’s Rebecca Matthews sets a SSC record, this time in women’s 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:13.28. Matthews replaces Nicole Webber of Saint Leo. Anton Lobanov of Nova Southeastern sets new SSC and NCAA D-II record in the Men’s 200 Breaststroke with time of 1:53.49. Nova Southeastern women put up a SSC Championship record in the 400 free relay, racing to a 3:24.71 finish. Finishing off the SSC Championships was Nova Southeastern’s Men who set a new SSC record in the 400 Freestyle relay with a time of 2:55.55.

DAY THREE RECAP

ORLANDO, Fla. - The third day of the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships came to a close Saturday night. As promised day three was just as exciting as the previous two. There was no lull in the action as eight SSC records fell, as well as, nine Championship records.

 

The performances from today bring the aggregate totals to 19 SSC and 28 meet record breaking performances in the three days of action. The standings have shifted as Florida Southern has taken the lead from Nova Southeastern in the Men’s team standings. Nova Southeastern retains the women's team lead, but Florida Southern has jumped Tampa in the Women’s team standings. Below is a brief overview of the day’s action.

 

Day three Preliminaries

Records broken:

There was more record breaking action to kick-start the day, as Marco Palacios of Florida Southern set a new SSC Championships record in the Men’s 100 Backstroke with a time of 47.74. Rebecca Matthews of Lynn set a new SSC record for the Women’s 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:01.33. She dethrones her current teammate Tyne Potgieter (1:02.39) who set the record just last year, on the exact date. Also setting a new SSC Championship record in the prelims was Anton Lobanov of Nova Southeastern by posting a men’s 100 Breaststroke time of 54.12.

Day two Finals

Records broken:

The finals started in dramatic fashion much like all the previous sessions. Daniel Bis of Saint Leo set a new SSC record for the Men’s 500 Freestyle with a time of 4:22.50. Marco Palacios of Florida Southern improved his record time for the Men’s 100 Backstroke he set in prelims with a new SSC record of 47.15. Rebecca Matthews of Lynn also improved her record-breaking performance from earlier in the day and set a new SSC record in Women’s 100 Breaststroke with a 1:00.88 time. Anton Lobanov of Nova Southeastern shattered the SSC record in men’s 100 breaststroke with by setting the new time at 52.00 which was 1.13 seconds faster than the previous record. Courtney DeVeny of Nova Southeastern set another SSC record this time in the Women’s 200 Fly. DeVeny set the record by posting a time of (2:01.20). Florida Southern’s Rau Garrastazu bested his previous SSC record he established in the Men’s 200 Butterfly with a new record time of 1:46.49. Nova Southeastern’s Women capped the day off by setting a new SSC record in the 800 Freestyle relay with a time of 7:22.67.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Day two action of the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships took place Friday, Feb. 19. The day was another day packed with record breaking action as five more SSC records fell, as well as, eight meet records.

 

The performances from today bring the aggregate totals to 12 SSC and 19 meet record breaking performances that have been broken in just two days of action. Once day two action came to a close, the standings have remained constant with Nova Southeastern leading the standings

Day two Preliminaries

Records broken:

Day two action started with a bang just like day one. Nova Southeastern’s Bryndis Hansen is now the owner of the Women’s 100 Butterfly SSC record as she registered a time of (54.49). Hansen improved the time she set previously for the record (54.83) in 2014. Another Shark set a record as Thiago Sickert set an SSC Championship record in the men’s 100 fly with a time of (47.94). He replaces Matheus Assis of Saint Leo, who set the record last year. Also setting a new record was Emma Wahlstrom of Nova. Wahlstrom set a new Championship meet record for the Women’s 200 Freestyle putting up a time of (1:49.35).

Day two Finals

Records broken:

Second day of finals began much like the prelims with Nova Southeastern shattering records. Bryndis Hansen bested her 100 Butterfly record that she set earlier with a new time of (54.34). Also improving upon a record established in the prelims was Nova’s Emma Wahlstrom setting a new time for the meet record that she set in Women’s 200 Freestyle with a time of (1:48.93). Following the trend, Thiago Sickert also improved the time of a record he set in the prelims. Sickert also shedded time off the SSC championship record he set in the Men’s 100 Butterfly with a new record time of (47/69). Rounding out the individual records broken today was Courtney DeVeny, who set a new SSC record in the Women’s 400 IM with a time of (4:16.83). The new time dethrones Allie Crenshaw of Nova Southeastern (4:19.75) who set the record in 2013. Nova Southeastern’s Women’s relay teams set new records in the 200 Medley relay (1:33.05), and the 400 Medley relay (3:45.75). Nova’s 200 Medley relay time was an SSC record, and the 400 Medley relay was Championships record. Closing out the day’s action Nova Southeastern’s Men’s 400 Medley relay team set a new Championships record posting a time of (3:12.52).

The day was packed with action and excitement as seven SSC records fell, as well as, nine meet records. The dust settled on the first day Nova Southeastern leads the standings in both Men’s and Women’s team standings. Below is a brief overview of the day’s action.

Day one Preliminaries

Records broken:

Day one action began with Rebecca Matthews of Lynn setting a new SSC record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.79 dethroning Alexandra Hipoito of Tampa 2013 mark of (2:03.68). Also, Matthews time makes her as a Women’s A qualifier for the NCAA Finals in May. Nova Southeastern’s Bryndis Hansen shattered another SSC record as she set the record for the 50 Freestyle. She recorded a time of (22.79) she replaced Marry O’Sullivan of Florida Southern (22.99) was the owner of the record four years running.

Day one Finals

Records broken:

The finals started off with Brit Brayes of Tampa setting an SSC Championship record for the 1000 Freestyle. Bayes put up a time of 10:04.9, which also earns her a spot in the NCAA Finals as a B qualifier. Once again, Rebecca Matthews of Lynn set a new SSC record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.39 besting her time set earlier on the day. That time also qualifies her as a Women’s A qualifier for the NCAA Finals. Bryndis Hansen shattered her time she set earlier in the day in the Women’s 50 Freestyle her new record is (22.68). Daniel Bis of Saint Leo relieved Chris O’Linger of his SSC record in the Men’s 1000 Freestyle by posting a time of (9:01.09). Another Lion set a record on the day was Pawal Trenda, who set a meet record in the Men’s 200 IM with a time of (1:47.77) he replaces Jeb Halfacre of Florida Southern. The women of Nova Southeastern set an SSC record in the 200 medley registering a time of (1:42.43). That record was previously held by Florida Southern (1:43.39) who set the record in 2011.
