WINTER PARK, Fla. (Women’s Soccer) – A total of 25 student-athletes have been named to the 2013 All-Sunshine State Conference Women’s Soccer Team. Saint Leo’s Arielle Kabangu took home three major awards as she was selected as the Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. Barry’s Becca Rogers was named Defensive Player of the Year, while her coach Denise Brolly was named Coach of the Year.

Earning a spot on the All-SSC First Team with Kabangu (F) and Rogers (GK) were: forwards Cici Gonzalez (Tampa) and Lauren Manna (Barry); midfielders Mora Johnson (Rollins), Lavinia Nkomo (Barry) and Paxton Sickler (Rollins); defenders Ashley Harlan (Barry), Taylor Thigpen (Rollins) and Shannon Walisch (Tampa); and at-large selection Alyssa Abrahamsen (Florida Southern).

Tampa forward Gabby Russo and Saint Leo forward Fabienne Schwenk received honorable mention.

Voting for the All-SSC Women’s Soccer Team was conducted among the league’s women’s soccer coaches.

A freshman from Ottawa, Canada, Kabangu led the SSC in scoring with 22 goals and 49 points. Her 22 goals were the most among Division II, while her 49 points ranked her second in the nation. Kabangu averaged a conference-best 3.06 points per game and 1.38 goals per game during the regular season. She was also third in the SSC with five game-winning goals.

Rogers, a junior from Miramar, Fla., led the SSC in goals against average (0.62), save percentage (.881) and shutouts (8). Her goals against average tied her for the best average in Division II. Rogers was a three-time SSC Defensive Player of the Week after recording five of her eight shutouts during the last seven games of the season.

Denise Brolly wins her first SSC Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year award after taking over as head coach at Barry this season. Brolly had spent the previous six years as the Buccaneer’s assistant coach. Her team went unblemished in conference action with a record of 7-0-1 to capture Barry’s first regular-season conference title since 2004. With an overall record of 12-3-1, the Buccaneers moved up to No. 18 in the latest NSCAA top-25 poll.
