Rollins Women, Southern & Tech Men Win Mayors’ Cup Trophies
Rollins is the winner of the women’s division of the 2011-12 Sunshine State Conference Mayors’ Cup. Florida Southern and Florida Tech are the co-winners of the men’s division.
First presented following the 1986-87 academic year, the award has traditionally been sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.
In the women’s division, points are awarded based on final conference standing in cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, rowing, and softball. In the men’s division, points are awarded for final standing in cross country, soccer, basketball, swimming, golf, tennis, and baseball. In each category, points awarded depend on the number of conference schools that sponsor the particular sport. In both divisions, points in soccer and basketball are awarded based on regular-season finish, while tennis points are based on finish in the SSC tournament.
Rollins collected 47 points in the women’s division to edge out runner-up Nova Southeastern, which tallied 46. Tampa was third with 43 points, followed by Florida Southern in fourth with 40.5. Barry ranked fifth in the final standings with 37.5 points, while Saint Leo was sixth with 34.0. Lynn (29.0), Florida Tech (27.0), and Eckerd (18.0) rounded out the women’s standings.
Rollins has won six women’s division Mayors’ Cup titles, including three in the last four years. In 2011-12, the Tars’ fortunes were greatly boosted by a tie for first-place in the women’s basketball standings. The Rollins soccer squad finished second, while the softball team tied for second. Rowing and women’s tennis picked up points for third-place showings, and the volleyball team tied for third. The Tar swimmers finished fourth at the SSC Championship, while golf and cross country placed sixth at their respective championship events.
Florida Southern and Florida Tech each gathered 34.5 points in the final men’s division standings. Lynn took the No. 3 slot with 31.5 points. Nova Southeastern was fourth with 28.5 points, followed closely by Barry in fifth with 27 and Saint Leo in sixth with 26.5. Rollins (25.5), Tampa (24.5), and Eckerd (17.5) completed the men’s division rankings.
The award marks the 12th men’s division Mayors’ Cup for Florida Southern. The Moccasins last shared the distinction with Barry in 2008-09. The Mocs’ standing was bolstered by second-place points in swimming, golf, and cross country. The FSC baseball team finished fourth in the standings, while the basketball squad tied for fourth. Men’s tennis placed fifth at the SSC Championship, and soccer was eighth in the regular-season standings.
Florida Tech claims its second men’s division Mayors’ Cup and its first since 1991-92. The Panthers’ ranking was greatly enhanced by a first-place finish in men’s basketball. A second-place performance by men’s soccer was also key. Tech claimed third-place points at both the golf and cross country championships. They placed sixth in baseball, swimming, and tennis.
