10 SSC Baseball Players Taken in MLB Draft

The Barry Buccaneers tied with Tampa and Florida Southern with three selections, while Saint Leo had one, giving the Sunshine State Conference 10 picks in Major League Baseball’s 2008 First-year Player Draft.

Junior switch-hitting catcher Braulio Pardo of Saint Leo was the highest pick, going in the 12th round (379 overall) to the Los Angeles Angles.

For Barry, senior outfielder John Servidio went in the 26th round (794 overall) to the New York Mets, while senior outfielder Andrew Frezza (952) and junior pitcher Bobby Hernandez (1162) went to the Boston Red Sox in the 31st and 38th rounds respectively.

For Florida Southern, senior pitchers Jeremy Thorne (889) and Ryan Koch (1089) and outfielder Brian Schultz (1048) went to the Angels, Toronto Blue Jays and Florida Marlins respectively.

Tampa’s junior first baseman Jose Jimenez (1009) and senior pitcher Kevin Ferguson (1309) went to the Angels as well, while senior outfielder Paul Cruz (1205) was tabbed by the St. Louis Cardinals.
