Gregg Smyth | Rollins College | Baseball | 1992-95

A former walk-on who became one of the most decorated pitchers in Rollins history, Gregg Smyth's name remains cemented in the Tars and NCAA Division II record books. The Stamford, Connecticut native is Rollins baseball’s all-time leader in strikeouts, set the program all-time wins mark, ad beat Michigan during Baseball Week in 1995. He finished his career establishing the current NCAA Division II record for most innings pitched. He was a two-time ABCA All-South Region honoree and was twice named All-SSC.

As a freshman, Smyth appeared in 21 games, posting a 9-5 record with four complete games. He finished the year with a 3.72 ERA, striking out 76 and walking 39 in 112 innings pitched. As a sophomore, Smyth  went 10-3 with two complete games in 24 appearances. He struck out 84 and walked 51 in 130 innings pitched. Smyth] enjoyed a breakout junior campaign, throwing six complete games and going 10-2 while adding four saves in relief. His 2.13 ERA that season remains one of the best among starters in Tars history, as does his 111 strikeouts to just 38 walks ratio. Smyth led the Tars to a 40-16 record and No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Division II poll during the year.

He was drafted by the New York Mets but elected to return to Rollins to pitch his senior season while finishing his degree. As a senior, Smyth appeared in 17 games, posting an 8-8 record and 4.09 ERA. He racked up 119 strikeouts in 132 innings to close his banner career. He was then drafted by the Houston Astros and played one season of professional baseball. Gregg was inducted into the Rollins Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.
