Laurent Lamothe | Barry University | Tennis | 1991-95
Laurent Lamothe was Barry University’s first men’s tennis All-American, reaching the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals in singles in 1993. He qualified for the NCAA national tournament twice during his career at Barry, and set the stage for today’s Buccaneer men’s teams that have excelled at nationals. A former member of the Haitian national Davis Cup team, Laurent played in 20 different countries, representing his nation. He had a #28 national collegiate ranking in 1994, and was #44 during his sophomore season. He was voted team MVP two years, and was an All-Sunshine State Conference selection in 1994. Laurent was an excellent student, earning Dean’s List honors several times.
He furthered his studies in Barry’s School of Business M.B.A. program. He was active in the community with the “Food for the Poor” organization, worked clinics for under-privileged children and ran leadership clinics in Little Haiti in Miami. He served as the Prime Minister of Haiti from 2012-14. Lamothe and former United States President Bill Clinton co-chaired the Presidential Advisory Council for the Economic Development and Investment in Haiti launched by President Martelly on 8 September 2011 to help redevelop Haiti by making it more attractive to foreign companies and investors. He founded the telecommunications company Global Voice Group with his business partner, Patrice Baker in 1998. The company, which started out as a small telecommunications company, is a worldwide provider of technological solutions in emerging markets and developing countries. Through his company, Lamothe introduced telecoms governance technologies in Africa which allow regulation agencies to manage the sector in terms of control, tariff equity and transparency.
