Athletes of the Week are chosen from a pool of nominees for their performances during the week of February 17 - 23, 2020. Athletes are nominated by Sports Information Directors of member institutions.
Men's Basketball Player of the Week
De’Ondre Jackson / Palm Beach Atlantic University / Sr. / Guard / Youngstown, Ohio
Jackson knocked down a pair of game-winning three-pointers last week on his way to Player of the Week honors. On Wednesday, Jackson scored a team-high 24 points, including a last-second three to lift PBA (78-77) over No. 10 Nova Southeastern University. The Youngstown, Ohio native followed with another game-winning shot, this time on the road at Rollins College in overtime. Jackson finished with 15 points, two steals, and two rebounds against the Tars. The senior guard scored his 39 points by shooting 62% from the field (16-26) and 54% from beyond the arc (7-13). Jackson played 58 minutes for the Sailfish, where he totaled three assists, three rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Jackson also became PBA's NCAA Division II leader in scoring this past week. He is the first PBA men's basketball athlete to win Player of the Week since November 16, 2017 (Grant Gullett).
Men's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Brooks Cluxton / Rollins College / Jr. / Forward / Oviedo, Florida
Cluxton is honored as Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against Lynn University and Palm Beach Atlantic University. Against Lynn on Wednesday, Cluxton pulled in a career-high 16 rebounds, including nine on the defensive end. He also had a blocked shot in the Tars' 89-71 road win. At home against PBA, the Oviedo, Florida product pulled in another eight defensive rebounds while blocking two shots and grabbing two steals during an 89-86 defeat. Offensively, Cluxton provided the Tars with 25 points, two assists, and nine offensive rebounds. He is the first Rollins men's basketball athlete to win Defensive Player of the Week since December 7, 2015 (Deion Clark).
Women's Basketball Player of the Week
Octavia Loll / Eckerd College / Guard / Sr. / Akron, Ohio
Loll powered Eckerd to a pair of SSC wins this week on her way to Player of the Week honors. The Akron, Ohio native began the week nearly missing a triple-double with a career-high 27 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds as the Tritons defeated Florida Southern College 84-75 on the road in double overtime. She had two game-tying shots in the game to force overtime and then a deep buzzer-beating three to force double-overtime. Loll followed with 23 points, five rebounds, four assists, and tied her career-high of four steals during an 87-65 victory against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The senior totaled 50 points by shooting 58% from the field (15-26), 33% from behind the arc (1-3), and 79% from the free-throw line (19-24). In her 88 minutes on the court, she recorded 13 rebounds, 13 assists, and six steals. The weekly award is the second of her career.
Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Week
Alani Gallagher / Saint Leo University / Forward / Jr. / Vestal, New York
Gallagher is named Defensive Player of the Week for the third time this season with her performance in a pair of conference games. The Vestal, New York native, had a steal, block, and 11 defensive rebounds during a 76-69 win at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Wednesday. On Saturday, she tallied three steals and eight defensive rebounds to help the Lions defeat Lynn University 69-66 at home. The junior averaged 11.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game for the Lions last week.
Baseball Player of the Week
Andrew Martinez / Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University / Jr. / Outfield / Jupiter, Florida
Martinez grabs his second Player of the Week honor of 2020 after slashing .471/.526/.824 for the Eagles last week. The junior from the Jupiter, Florida, went 8-for-17 at the plate, with three extra-base hits, seven runs scored, eight runs batted in, and two walks. The outfielder swiped a pair of bases on his way to 14 total bases in ERAU's four-game set. Martinez's top game of the week saw him go 4-for-6 at the plate against Saint Leo University, with a triple, home run, and six RBI. With the play of Martinez, the Eagles won a single game against Flagler College and took two-of-three games from Saint Leo.
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Brandon Knarr / University of Tampa / Jr. / York, Pennsylvania
Knarr set the tone for a series victory over rival Florida Southern College in a matchup of Top-5 national teams. The lefty got the nod in Friday's opener and went 7.0 innings without an earned run against the No. 5 Moccasins. The York, Pennsylvania native, allowed just two hits while striking out 15 batters and issuing only two walks. Fifteen strikeouts rank second on Tampa's all-time single-game strikeout list. UT would finish with a team total of 20 strikeouts, establishing a new school record in the 10-1 victory.
Softball Player of the Week
Ashley Campbell / Florida Tech / Jr. / Third Base / Dunedin, Florida
Campbell takes Player of the Week following her efforts in Florida Tech's series win over Eckerd College. The Dunedin, Florida product provided the Panthers with one run scored and five Runs Batted In over the weekend. Campbell managed at least one RBI per contest and also had a double and a walk, giving her an on-base percentage of .400 and a slugging percentage of .444. Defensively, she had three putouts and seven assists with no errors in the series. The junior's top performance came in game two, where she went 1-3 (.333) from the plate with a run, two RBI, a double, and a walk.
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Corynn Miner / University of Tampa / Jr. / St. Petersburg, Florida
Miner is awarded Pitcher of the Week honors after taking the circle two times in Tampa's series victory over No. 16 Saint Leo University. The St. Petersburg, Florida native tossed 13.2 innings, totaled 17 strikeouts, and allowed three earned runs. She struck out 11 batters in game one of the series, tying her second-highest output of the year. Miner then recorded a complete-game two-hit shutout in the rubber match of the series, her fourth complete-game shutout of the year, and second against a ranked opponent. Miner leads the SSC with 60 strikeouts and is second in ERA at 0.70.
Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Jack Wood / University of Tampa / Fr. / Attack / Duxbury, Massachusetts
Wood takes Offensive Player of the Week accolades following Tampa's 13-5 victory over No. 19 Florida Southern College. The freshman from Duxbury, Massachusetts, scored a career-high and four goals (one unassisted) in the victory. Wood placed seven of 10 shots on goal and an assist and groundball to his stat sheet.
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Gunner Gebelein / Palm Beach Atlantic University / So. / LSM / Huntingtown, Maryland
Gebelein records the second Defensive Player of the Week honor of his career following an outstanding performance against No. 14 Queens University. Gebelein, a native of Huntingtown, Maryland, recorded a game-high eight ground balls (for a non-faceoff player) and caused a game-high five turnovers as PBA fell to Queens 16-9 at home. The sophomore leads the SSC in ground balls among non-faceoff specialists and leads the conference in caused turnovers.
Men's Lacrosse Specialist of the Week
Ross Dickerson / University of Tampa / Sr. / FOS / Berlin, Maryland
Dickerson is awarded Specialist of the Week for his performance in the X during Tampa's 13-5 victory over No. 19 Florida Southern College. The senior faceoff specialist won 15-of-22 faceoffs (.682) in the victory. Dickerson also picked up nine groundballs and dished and assist in the contest. The weekly award is the ninth of his career, which places him third all-time in SSC men's lacrosse and ninth all-time for Tampa.
Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Claire Swanson / University of Tampa / Sr. / Midfield / Cheyenne, Wyoming
Swanson was the offensive leader for Tampa during a 2-0 week on the road. In a 19-5 victory at Newberry College, Swanson led the way with five points off four goals and an assist. She would also add five draw controls in the game. During a 19-6 win at Lenoir-Rhyne University, the Cheyenne, Wyoming native totaled eight points from five goals and three assists. Swanson also added nine draw controls and caused a turnover. For the week, she totaled nine goals, four assists, and 14 draw controls. She would also have a shot on goal percentage of .765 in the two games. The weekly award is the third of her career..
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Patricia Werker / Florida Southern College / So. / Goalie / Nesconset, New York
Werker is honored following her performance in goal against a pair of Top-10 opponents. The Nesconset, New York product tallied 11 saves while facing 22 shots and allowing just four goals in an 8-4 win over No. 1 Adelphi University. Werker then recorded 11 more saves and faced 30 total shots as FSC fell to No. 9 Lindenwood University 13-9 at home. The sophomore finished the week with 22 saves, three goundballs, and a caused turnover, a 7.00 goals against average, and a .611 save percentage.
Men's Golfer of the Week
Chris Fosdick / Florida Southern College / Fr. / Middlefield, Connecticut
At the Newberry College Invitational, Fosdick shot rounds of 77, 70, and 70 to finish in a tie for sixth place overall. In round three, the Middlefield, Connecticut native birdied holes two and three, before doing the same on holes six and nine to be 4-under at the turn. He was at 4-under until a double bogey on 15 put him at 70, 2-under, for the day. Fosdick finished the three-day invite at 1-over, 217. The weekly award is the second of his career.
Women's Golfer of the Week
Valentina Albertazzi / Nova Southeastern University / Fr. / Benahavis, Spain
Albertazzi and the top-ranked Nova Southeastern women's golf team swept both the individual and team titles this past Tuesday at the Lady Moc Classic. As a team, the Sharks fired a final-round score of (E) 288 to edge No. 5 Barry University by one stroke. At the same time, Albertazzi erased a two-shot deficit over the final 18 holes to hold off the nation's No. 1 player, the University of Tampa's Kiira Riihijarvi for her first career victory. The freshman's 54-hole total of (-11) 205 marks the second-lowest in program history, trailing only Taylor Collins, who carded a (-13) 203 through the first three rounds of the 2011 NCAA Division II Championship. Albertazzi currently ranks No. 2 in the country.
Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Erik Nordblom / Florida Southern College / Jr. / Molle, Sweden
Nordblom continues to produce for the Mocs, going 2-0 in doubles and 1-0 in singles in two wins over Bates College (6-1) and No. 10 Lynn University (5-2). Nordblom, partnered with Andres Cabezas, Won (6-1) over Lynn's Giovanni Araujo and Adam Johnsson in the #1 doubles flight. He went on to win at #2 singles (6-1, 6-1) over Robin Calais to help the Moccasins upset a Top-10 team for the second time this season. The win over Lynn was the Mocs' first since 2007, breaking a 17-match losing streak. Against Bates, Nordblom partnered with Hikaru Nagoshi to win (6-4) in the #3 doubles flight.
Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week
Jil Engelmann / Barry University / Sr. / Langenselbold, Germany
Engelmann is named Athlete of the Week after anchoring Barry across three victories in three consecutive days. The German won at #1 Singles (6-2, 6-4) and #2 Doubles (6-3) against No. 6 Saint Leo University on Friday. She then defeated Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's best at singles (6-2, 6-1) and won at #2 Doubles (7-6) on Saturday. Finally, on Sunday against No. 12 Flagler College, Engelmann won at #2 Singles (6-4, 6-4) and #2 Doubles (6-4). She was partnered with Qianxin Kong for all three doubles matches. The weekly award is the second of her career.
