GREENSBORO, N.C. - The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) has announced Garrett Wolforth of Nova Southeastern University and Derek Schwimer of Palm Beach Atlantic University as 2019 Rawlings Gold Glove winners. Selected since 2007, the Rawlings Gold Glove Awards are chosen by ABCA coaches committees at each level.

Wolforth, a senior from Spring, Texas, was recently selected in the 14th round by the Cincinnati Red. In his lone season with the Sharks, Wolforth held a .992 fielding percentage as a catcher as a dominant backstop for NSU, committing only two errors in 254 chances behind the dish. Wolforth shut down 41.7 percent of attempted steals, throwing out 15 would-be base thieves. He joins second baseman Carlos Asuaje (2012) and catcher Jake Anchia (2018) as the only Sharks to earn a Gold Glove. Wolforth is also the third SSC catcher to be honored, following Anchia and Lynn University’s Kyle Holloway (2009).

Schwimer, a junior from Port Saint Lucie, Florida, becomes the first from the PBA to be named a Gold Glove winner. He played errorless centerfield for the Sailfish in his first season with the program and added three outfield assists. Schwimer becomes the fourth SSC outfielder to be honored, first since 2015.

In total, 12 SSC baseball athletes from five programs have been named Gold Glove winners by ABCA and Rawlings since 2007. Florida Southern College, Nova Southeastern, and the University of Tampa each have three winners, while Lynn has two and Palm Beach Atlantic has one. This year marks the fourth time that two winners represented the league in the same year (2009, 2015, 2018).

The ABCA, founded in 1945, is the primary professional organization for baseball coaches at the amateur level. It's over 11,000 members represent all 50 states and 23 countries. Since its initial meeting of 27 college baseball coaches in June 1945, Association membership has broadened to include eight divisions: NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA, Pacific Association Division, High School and Youth. The 76th annual ABCA Convention will be held Jan. 2-5, 2020 in Nashville, Tennessee.
